Awesome accommodation, exceptionally clean, comfy beds and warm. Amazing food and wonderful staff. Management are to be commended for making our snow trip such an enjoyable experience.  We always stay at snowy gums and it just gets better and better, thanks to Gary, Lea and Henk and crew!  Highly recommend. !!

The only place to stay on snow

Just spent 3 nights at snowy gums chalet at Smiggin Holes and can I just say wow. What a great place to stay. Great location, amazing food (and plenty of it) and a staff that is truly committed to making sure that they are completely COVID safe. Thank you to Leah, Hank and all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable. We will definitely be back, if not this season next year for sure!

Great snow stay

We came here during beginning of the season this year. Due to covid the management needed to put in a lot more restrictions such as two rounds of dinner serving groups, food & beverage only handled by staff. The serving staff became very busy. But they were very helpful in meeting our needs. 
Manager Lea was super friendly and welcoming. We were late first night and she called to checked if we are dining and saved us dinner. 
Conversations after dinner at the bar was also very fun.
Our son said top 5 enjoyment of the trip includes friendly staff service of this place. We recommend it.

Our stay was the best ever you only have to walk about 120m to the ski lifts. you don't have to worry about the food the view and the staff were very nice would come again. If your going skiing in perished come to smiggin holes and book a room at snowy gums. 5/5

Snowy gums

We had a great stay in the last week of June. Took a gamble on Snowy Gums this year based on the parent company's (OzSnow) assurances that management/service would be improved this year. And it was. The new manager was fantastic, friendly and workwd hard to keep everything running smoothly. Happy to say the lodge had a family friendly vibe, nice view from the renovated lounge/dining area and the food was alright. Rooms were clean and the sauna was working again! No spa though - that seems to be being used as a tech room presently - be nice if they got that going again. The location is great, we could ski from the front door as there had been a big dump the week we arrived. Would definitely stay again based on this.

Breakfast same thing no sleep in 7 30 am or miss out and most mornings was cold as food warmer appeared not to work 
Room was large and comfortable but cold heating was poor no tv reception handy if you can’t ski
Also no mention up front of parking fee charged on check out 
The lounge area closed during the day and fireplace not very warm seems they were short on wood maybe 
But I will say staff were great

Good but could be better

The place is quite nice, typical older, wooden hotel in Australia, not the new modern bricks, so kind of differrnnt atmosphere. However, the blizzard came when I was there and due to the older wood construction sometimes you can hear the wood shrieking and that happened all night.

The location is not far from Smiggin Hole ski lift as it's quite near,  though not across which is very good as it's not noisy. Probably only 5 minutes walking down. However be extra careful as during winter it's covered with snow and ice so it's slippery. Should make stairs or a handle for easier access.

The employees were all very nice and warm. I like the all you can eat $19 buffet on Friday night. The breakfast was standard. The restaurant itself was nice and warm. Maybe can try the steak too cause it looks nice.

There's a small spa, room to put your ski gear, vending machine, billiard table and karaoke if you want. There's no kettle in the room though. Seems the electricity was not enough if every room use an electric kettle. The power outlet also limited so might want to consider bring your own.

My friend got a room with mezzanine level so their daughters can sleep upstairs and their window view was nice.

The only thing that really needs an improvement is the heater. There's heat produce but it's not enough for the weather. When I came it was around 1 degree Celsius and it became minus 4. The bed sheet type didn't help as it's a standard cold hotel bed sheet. I would suggest to bring your own portable heater to help warm your room. Unfortunately parking was not free as well. I'd give 3.5 stars for this place, which unfortunately can't be done in Tripadvisor. Change the heater and give a free parking for  hotel'guest then I'd change to 4. Might be difficult for parking as the space is limited but if you come with children then I'd advised you to book a parking space.

Seems it's part of Ozsnow package so you need to stop in Jindabyne if you book your ski gear, which make it a bit troublesome if you use a small car and bring a lot of luggage or need to change your snow gears. However, I notice you could rent snow gears in Rhytm Smiggins, a place right across the Smiggin Hole ski lift, or in Smiggin Hotel so it's easier if you need to change your shoes. There's a rental in Perisher as well.

Nice place but could be improve.

We stayed during one of the heaviest snowfalls they’d ever seen. We had a bumpy start as we arrived while the staff were still trying to check people out and we’d clearly caught them on an off day.  We also weren’t able to keep our car on the snow as it would have been snowed in by the time we left due to heavy snow storms that weekend, which made for an expenisve trip by the time we caught the snow tube back up.

The accomodation was very close to the chairlifts and ski hire places. Having breakfast and dinner included was a nice touch and a convenient option. The food was good and the staff were nice. 

The room had all the basic ammenities, towels, simple toiletries and a tv. The walls were very thin and we could hear every person that went pass and even people talking in he bathroom next door. 

The common area was a nice touch, especially if you have kids or want to chat to other families. It did get a bit noisy at times though. There is a bar open in the evenings which is nice. 

We also had a bus full of highschool students stay while we were there which made it a little noisy, especially in the morning when everyone was in the foyer tryin to get out the door with their snow gear at the same time. Staff did stagger their meal times though so that the families and non-student guests could have their meals without being bombarded by students, so that was managed well. 

I think this place is great for families and young people. Not so much if you’re a light sleeper or a couple looking for a romantic getaway. 
We fetl it was a bit expensive for what it was, but you are obviously paying for the convience of staying on the snow, a few minutes walk from the chair lifts and if that’s what you want then that is what you will get from Snowygums.

Close to snow, but thin walls

We selected Snowy Gums for the location and availability. When booking I asked about room facilities which was told there weren’t any, so we organised alternative solutions for outside breakfast hours which started at 7am (we are early risers!).

On arrival staff are very friendly and advise us that our door gets a bit stuck (you have to slam the door to shut it). 

Our room was a good size for 2, warm, clean and did have tea/coffee, jug small table and chairs and microwave placed on top of a small fridge. Driving from Qld knowing this would have been good to know before I got here. 

The bed was set up as 2 x singles, but staff were quick to check in and change for us. 

The power point behind the bed was hanging out from the wall and exposed wires, but staff also quickly fixed that. 

The walls are quite thin and we heard people next door and their conversations at times. 
We could also hear conversations in the hallway very clearly. 

To reduce our eavesdropping on others we tried to watch TV which was advertised as an inclusion.   Staff were helpful to assist us with trying to get it working, however the setup on the TV is difficult to use, the 3 free to air channels were not working, and could not access anything else so it was deemed useless. 

We were advised that there were allocated areas for each unit in the drying room for boots and equipment, however the accommodation must have been fully booked as it was a free for all and people were just putting their stuff everywhere and it was a fight to get your own stuff out. 

Food:
Our first night we ate in and selected the chicken schnitzel (we had been advised that the pasta was not good).  The chicken looked and tasted like it had been reheated several times and was not very pleasant. 

That was the last time we had dinner there. 

Breakfast was included for each morning. This was basic as expected with a variety of cereals, breads - white, wholemeal, raisin. Hot food included eggs, bacon, baked beans, hash browns, and either fried tomato or mushrooms. 

First morning was scrambled eggs, but each morning after was hard boiled eggs.
Pineapple or apple juice was on offer as well as vanilla yoghurt and tinned fruit. 
There was a variety of jams and peanut butter and instead of butter nuttelex was provided. 

The cleanliness of plates and crockery were highly questionable and had to scan through to get clean ones. 

It felt like a camp not accommodation we paid for as when we finished breakfast we had to clean off our own plates into various buckets on a table and stack our plates. 

It appeared that the food was progressively becoming less fresh as the week went on culminating in our 2nd last day saw mouldy bread, no butter/nuttelex, eggs that looked and tasted like they had been recycled all week and bacon so hard and crispy from being recooked. 

That was the last straw for us and ended up leaving a day early. 

The staff were friendly and helpful, but could only work with what they had. 

This accommodation had a good reputation in the past but seems to need a significant refurbishment just to bring it back to comfortable living conditions and in line with the rates it charges. 


A Downhill Slide. 

We visited Snowy Gums mid week in late July 2022. The property was in a bit of a disheveled state, dirty, and the communal lounge populated with friendly but shabby staff. Cigarette smoke wafted up to the lounge from the entrance where staff gathered to smoke and the lounge itself had loud music pumping over the stereo system most of the day. The large stereo speakers also happened to be rigged up (with cables everywhere) in the middle of the lounge and took up prime seats right in front of the window blocking the otherwise nice view. Breakfast buffet was average. Bar didn't have any decent wine, but plenty of cans of mixers. For the money we paid, it was not good value and certainly not a family friendly vibe. More like a mid range backpackers at 100x the price! Better tailored to the staff than the paying guests. 

Snowy Gums used to be a great chalet. I understand the business sold before the start of last season. The lack of positive reviews for last season is in line with our experience . What went wrong? Maybe the new owners got off to a bad start. Any indication the current owners are making a commitment to return this chalet to a clean, family friendly place to stay? A small amount of effort toward better management would make a big difference for guests and probably attract better reviews!
