This tiny hostel/café/restaurant is quite an unusual place to stay, perched high on a hill with unbeatable panoramic views over central Salzburg. Certainly unique.

There are only a handful of rooms but as a 4-person family staying one night, we were able to book a dorm-style room (normally accommodating 6) to ourselves. Room was basic but perfectly serviceable, with a fantastic view. Shared washrooms that were clean and appeared to be recently refurbished.

Things to be aware of:
- It's hostel-style accommodation. Bring towels, soap etc.
- Take the lift by the modern museum to get up the mountain if you can (watch the opening hours), and walk from there (there's a path, although rucksacks would be better than suitcases). It's not as easy as it might be to find.
- As there is a (small) restaurant, it can be noisy until relatively late. As a family with children of 7 and 9 years old, it wasn't a major problem for us, being the summer, but it's something to be aware of.
- Limited/basic breakfast and serving times
- As it's slightly out of the way, it may not be the best place if you are in a rush.
- If you're travelling by car, there is underground parking in the mountain more or less directly under the hostel (still takes a while to get from there, outside, find the lift, and walk to the hostel though)

Fantastic views, with basic hostel-style accommodation

Spectacular views out of the window in the room, just looks exactly like a postcard. Photos just don't do it justice. It is an amazing place. 

Room were comfortable, breakfast was pretty good (coffee and warm bread rolls or spicy brown bread with ham, cheese, or jam). 

We checked in late and had no trouble getting in. An envelope and instructions were left outside for us. Didn't talk to anyone in charge until the last day when we checked out and paid, they seemed pleasant people to deal with. 

Shared sinks and shower area was a bit awkward as showers are semi transparent...

Don't forget to bring a towel as the accommodation does not provide them!

If you find the brochure about the Fortress (there are some where you buy the tickets to the Fortress) check it out for '50% off the lift' vouchers. That saves some money. :)

Can't go wrong with a view like this

The sunshine helped,  but I can't imagine a more beautiful spot to sit and gaze over  Saltzburg and the surrounding hills.
We only had coffee, but quality was good and prices reasonable. A lovely walk through the woods,  and a steady  climb up and down (but there is a lift  nearby for the less energetic.

On a clear day....you can see forever!

Very nice view and a nice breakfast included in the price at 9-10am every morning. The view is stunning however it takes a bit of effort to get to up all the steps! Its about a 15 minute walk from the main town. The staff were helpful but there was no front desk and asking to check in and out felt difficult as they were waiting on customers in the restaurant. I felt more an inconvenience than a guest. The beds were comfortable but you have to dress and undress them yourself. We noticed others had reported bed bugs and we ourselves were bitten, I found one crawling on me which was unpleasant.

I had booked the double room (there is only one) for my partner and myself, so you can imagine my surprise when we arrived and were informed by the waiter (there is no receptionist or person responsible for the rooms) that the reservation had been cancelled.

The reservations manager (a guy called Peter, who is maybe also the owner) had mistakenly cancelled it following a call I had made to cancel breakfast. I had even told him over the phone that I will be sending him a written confirmation so as to ensure everything was crystal clear. He had then promptly responded with 3 words (That is ok).

The waiter proceeded to call Peter and he then came back telling us it was fine. We paid, followed the waiter upstairs to our room, which we saw was fitted with a bunk-bed and not a double bed. This is where we really felt played, as the waiter had never told us before we paid that the double room was occupied, and even when faced with it was coming up with petty excuses (like: 'yeah, but the double room is more expensive you know?'). 

That dishonesty did not sit well with either of us. If we wanted to we could have really started a discussion, but we did not want our short romantic stay in Salzburg to be clouded by this so we just sighed and carried on with our lives.

It's all pretty sad, as the view up there is beautiful and the food was nice. 

Stadtalm Naturfreundehaus: Get your grip together management-wise. This is not the first review complaining about this.

Bad management. Unfortunate dishonesty. Panoramic view.

First tip on staying in Stadtalm Naturfreundehaus is the Monschberg Lift in Museum of Modern Art which cost around 2 euros one way and around 3 euros back and forth so you do not have to haul your luggage all the way up the mountain. Lift hours are from 8AM to 7PM but extends during winter in consideration of the Christmas markets.

We arrived in Salzburg on a snowy morning and we thought the hike up will be short as we did not expect a hostel to be way up the mountains. It was tiring but the views were gorgeous as you will pass by a snow covered forest and the view at the top is the whole of Salzburg. We can see the Hohensalzburg Castle from our window.

Upon arriving, we were not instructed where to go as the first floor was a restaurant so we went upstairs. When there was no lobby there as well we asked one waiter where to check in. He asked us to go down again with our luggage and made us wait in the restaurant. We then filled out forms and gave 30 euros as deposit for the key. We would have preferred that he just brought the forms upstairs or let us leave our luggage upstairs as we had to carry it down and up again as there was no lift. After that he just gave us a key with no other instructions and we still had to ask if check in was done. You also have to make your own bed. Towels are not provided.

The bathroom on the second floor was being renovated so you had to go down every time you have to use the facilities. There is only one bathroom each for men and women for the whole hostel and restaurant. For the showers, there were only two stalls and the doors were transparent so there was no privacy. So when you use the facility, you have to lock the outer door so as to prevent others from coming in or seeing you from the outside (every time someone comes in). Only plus side was water was always hot. 

Room was really basic but no complaints there as we expect those from a hostel. Two beds, a cabinet and sockets near the door and bed. View from our room was the whole of Salzburg and castle so that was great. It was snowing heavily and it looked right out of a fairytale.

We were not able to try the breakfast as it starts quite late, at 9 AM. Since we have limited daylight during winter, we had to leave early and start our hike to go to the city. 

At checkout, we were ready to go, however, we were asked to strip our bed and bring the linens downstairs. This was the first time this ever happened to us. Overall, may recommend for a hike up to see Salzburg from the top or eat at the outside area of the restaurant but do not recommend staying here.

Great view but terrible service

There's no denying that the view from Stadtalm is great. The price is also ok. That's where what is good about this place starts and ends. The two stars are for literally for the view and the price only. Once you find the place that is. Hot tip- take the elevator from the Museum of Modern Art if you want to save hauling your luggage up many, many stairs like we did.

First- it's a restaurant before it's a hostel. There isn't a front desk or anything. Whilst the guy who checked us in was nice, every assistance after that stopped. You have to loiter weirdly at the bottom of the stairs in hope of a passing waiter to ask a question. The one night we decided we might eat at the restaurant, we were told it was a 'private function' and that we couldn't. Eat in the room? No. Beers for the room? No- apparently it was too difficult to charge us because the function was all on one bill. I offered to pay cash. The guy literally threw his hands in the air and gestured towards the beer tap with much  muttering for his colleague to pour the beer. It's nice to feel so welcomed. 

Then there's the noise. The people in the restaurant were obviously enjoying themselves, which is great, but it's pretty much impossible to sleep. I travelled with my partner and his sister. She was in a separate room to us and emerged haggard the first morning from lack of rest. We tag-teamed and I took her room the second night  and apart from the noise, was kept awake by the fact that the room is a literal inferno as it shares a common wall with a chimney which heats the restaurant downstairs. Did not sleep at all. The smell of deep fryer is also very strong upstairs.

The bathrooms are communal (fine, it's a hostel) but you have to be pretty comfortable in the showers as the doors are glass and there isn't any private space to dry or change. The water pressure and temp were excellent though (not worth a third star!) The upstairs toilets were being renovated which meant a trip to pee was super inconvenient and (because of the restaurant) meant it felt rude to sneak down in your pyjamas if you needed to go at night. In fact, I actually got a filthy look from one of the staff members for going downstairs to use the bathroom during the dinner service. 

There's no common area for hostel guests which means it misses the usual opportunity to get to know other travellers. Breakfast is from 9-10 only, which means if you have a tour booked for the morning or anything you don't get to eat. 

It really would not be hard to get this place right. I felt like a second-class citizen staying here and that is my biggest criticism of Stadtalm. I can stand nearly everything else for the price. They need to care more for the people staying- like the restaurant guests- we are paying customers too and definitely deserve a bit more.
