Loved this hostel from the first second I got in there! From the doorstep it makes you feel like home, like part of the family. The staff (Liza, Franco, Ramiro, Robertito, Bruno, Cinthia) and the owners (Pablo and Loic) do what they love and love what they do. Special thanks goes to Liza and Pablo who fill the time and space with their smiles and huge hearts. Everything is very very simple, not pretentious, I think a bit more of investment would be cool (the hostel needs new matrasses and at least one private room), but this one thing you can't buy - welcoming and happy vibe - they surely have it! I made tons of friends both among staff and the guests.

Rooms are cleaned every day, good breakfast variety, cool events, cool guests. 2 minutes walk to the beach, safe neighbourhood, every information at the reception you might need - all this makes D'Boa hostel the best option for those who travel solo or in a group.

Amazing vibe

I had one of the most amazing experience what so ever in Salvador. It all begin right hear in D'Boa hostel. And it really is D'Boa - I made friends for all my life. 

Warm welcome, nice people, lots of positive talks, help when needed.

The hostel is average. We had dormitory 4 beds room, which was on the same floor as kitchen, reception and community area. Because of that it was a bit noisy. The room as you can see on added pictures. Breakfast was very basic. Staff -  hard to say anything about them, as they didn't talk to anyone. Location was good. Close to the main beach, restaurants and bars. Hostel is easy to reach by bus from the airport. Many busses stops just outside the hostel.

The staff was really helpfull and friendly. The hostel is well situated in the Barra area: a 2min walk from the beach and a 5min walk from the Barra lighthouse, which offers a great view. 
Unfortunately the infrastructure of the hostel wasn't good, the rooms were very small and quite dirty and the furniture and matrasses were really old. The bathroom was separated with a plastic foldable door which didn't offer much privacy and the water in the shower was cold.
We stayed 2 nights for a very good price, so we didn't really complain, but a few improvements could make this hostel really great!

A few improvements needed

I don’t even know where to begin! There is cheap and cheerful and there is cheap and basic, unfortunately D’boa falls into the latter. After 3 nights, I had to check out and find an alternative place on the same road! To be honest, a tent would have been a better option- at least then you would be prepared for how basic D’boa hostel is. After reading the reviews and looking for a hostel in Salvador to compliment the one I stayed at in Rio Janeiro, I was tempted by the price and location. The hostel is mostly open planned and tries to recreate a beach shack feeling. There is no air conditioning which will be horrible in Salvador’s hotter months and the decor (apart from the wall opposite the rooms) is dreary and needs updating. I was shocked to learn that this hostel is only coming up to it’s 2nd year as it could pass for 10 years old due to its decor and furniture.

When I was led to my room, I am surprised that my face did not fail in hiding my astonishment. There was a big bit of mould on the wall behind the door and no air conditioning as mentioned before. The doors do not lock so I had to use my suitcase to block it in the night when I slept. There were two bunk beds crammed inside, 4 shelves which accompanied each bunk but alas, absolutely nowhere to store clothes and belongings. There was an “ensuite”, I say in quotations because it was only separated from the room with a plastic sliding barrier which was not sufficient to provide privacy or odour protection. Luckily for me, I was the only one in the room, but had someone else checked in and the weather been much hotter, the room situation would have been even more unbearable. 

Most of the staff weren’t very friendly and seemed to be more interested in chilling with their friends than attending to guests or providing information about things that are happening around the area (unless you approach them). English is not really spoken either. I thought that coming at an “out-of-season” time and the fact that I was like the only guest would aid in an exceptional experience but it was quite the opposite. Breakfast is basic like everything else and they don’t even have a kettle to make tea! 

Never coming back and I am so happy I found somewhere else as this meant that my holiday was salvaged.
