Arrived at the hostel to find some lovely welcoming guests who shared food with us late at night! This made us feel very welcome here and so did the staff. The breakfast was fantastic, one of the best you’ll find in a hostel anywhere in South America! The only thing that was a let down was the tour they recommend to do around the beaches. We paid $150Br each and then the guide spoke not a single word of Spanish or English and he made us pay $20Br more for visiting canal du Jari. We went there and loved to walk around, we saw monkeys and sloths. Then at the end he told us we had to pay more. That was very poor communication from him. It gave me a sour taste for the rest of the day as I could not trust him with anything.

Best place to stay in Alter Do Chao

Stayed 3 nights at Pousada do Tapajós. Had to pick a taxi to the pousada for R$100 because there are so few buses from Santarém airport. To go back to the airport, the bus schedule is available at the hostel.

Room was super clean and staff was extra nice. Had a single room with a private bathroom. Breakfast was splendid with lots of fruits, homemade juice, coffee, bread, cake, cheese, ham, egg and tapioca.

There is nice area outside with hammocks and the beach is pretty close. It's about 5 to 10 minutes to the city center and a supermarket.

The pousada offers tour with an agency if that interests you. Did the Flona and Jari tour which were both OK. I was alone so it was cheaper joining a group than booking something by myself.

So I would definitely go back to this place again and I recommend it.

Nice place in Alter do Chão

I booked this place based on great reviews of other independent travelers and, due to the location, the Amazon Jungle of Pará, Brazil, I had no major expectations in terms of quality and cleanness, as it was my first time in the region. I have stayed in many hostels worldwide, including Europe and Australia, and this Hostel delivers equal or even higher standards in terms of cleanness (rooms, bathrooms, common areas), service and breakfast. The breakfast is a great opportunity for travelers to learn about local food and fruits as everyday there are different fruits and juices, although bread, butter, jelly and sausages are commonly available. The rooms have no views and windows are usually closed, which makes sense as during the night air-condition is on and during the day no one stays inside, but walking or doing trips to the amazing sandy beaches of sweet and hot water of the rivers or to the Amazon jungle. I've paid a local guide to show me some local animals in the jungle such as monkeys and etc, during a trip to the Jari River. Surprisingly, one day after staying at the beach I've decided to take a nap in the hammock area of the hotel around 4pm, after a while I woke up with the sound of two iguanas coming from the top of the Caju tree to pick caju fruits from the ground, they were amazing and big, yet, harmless, and right next to me! so if you are patient, the hammock area can be a good place to spot local wildlife too! you can check the picture of the iguana on my instagram arthurdiniz_26. The hostel is run by an amazing local family, Ms. Sandra and Mr. Reinaldo and their sons. Reinaldo guides and drives boat trips to the beaches and other local communities in the region. Reinaldo and the Hostel supports independent travelers to join other groups to share the costs of a boat trip, or to find extra boat drivers if the group is larger than one boat. I've meet amazing Brazilian and English, German and French independent travelers as well as a family and their 5 years old boy in this hostel. Alter do chão is a tinny relaxing village in the middle of an immensity of sweet waters from the rivers of this region. There are countless nice spots to check in Alter and in the beaches by the rivers, which are usually reached by boat (by the boat trips provided by locals or by the Hostel). A good tip is to always bargain the price of the boat trips, although they are not, in any case, expensive. Just remember that there are some tourist operators that may be more expensive as they are increasingly operating in the area for corporate or wealthy families willing for more comfortable and luxury boats. This place is the paradise on earth and the experience of being there is remarkable, the dimension of the rivers and their beaches is impressive: Manaus and Belém are two important cities in therms of local businesses, but in therms of wildlife and contact with the nature this spot is by far the best destination, so if you are short of time, a great suggestion is to stay more days in Alter and travel by boat to the surrounding communities, beaches and forests, which can also be a destination to sleep as many communities have hammocks or beds to arrange for travelers - in these communities you can experience sleeping under the forest which is a great experience. I hope this review helps many travelers to find the beauty of this amazing still unexplored region, which is also under the threat of the predatory mining activities, as the region lays on top of the largest mineral reserve in the planet.

Nice hostel/pousada, simple rooms but spacious and clean. The grounds are nice with a good garden area with hammocks to chill out.  Breakfast is very good, lots of variety, fresh fruit and juices. They offer all the tours to visit the highlights of the region. Wifi is not the best...

Nice Pousada

Good location, clean rooms, nice kitchen to cook and comfy exteriors with garden, service always helpful people. Wifi connection, which is not usual in Alter and THE BEST breakfast! I would reccomend it, for sure!!!

Perfect if you need cheap & quality hostel with a lot of services

Very good hostel! Especially the breakfast was awesome!!! Although we were just few people  (low season) the buffet was big and we got tapioca :-)! Location is good and some of the stuff speak English.

Awesome stay!

A friendly welcome and helpful staff at the reception desk. Good and clean rooms, especially if you remember you are in Amazonia ;-) Breakfast was OK. The garden could be better maintained as the grass on the pictures was replaced by dust. Pleasant place to lie in a hamok and meet Raphaël, friendly and professional guide of the travel agency Amazon Incoming Travel.

the bungalow-style pousada is a great place to meet very interesting (brazilian) people!
rooms and dorms very spacy, clean & very good bathrooms...
the (incl.) breakfast is outstanding - the service efficient and friendly.
