I will start off by saying that the actual area is amazing. Waterfalls at every direction , beautiful scenery where ever you go( which makes car rides actually enjoyable )and a wonderful simple farm like atmosphere all around Vargem Bonita. On top of that the little chalets are beyond charming, they are small, but very cozy, and because each small house is next to one another it is very easy to make friends with other families that happen to be staying there also. I'd say the whole place encourages a "friendly neighbour " behaviour but without demanding people to interact . The worst thing I can say about this place is that you will gain weight , the food is A M A Z I N G, you will find yourself going for second plates at every meal, very simple traditional Brazilian food that hits the spot perfectly . Can't recommend it more, an absolute must go.

The owners, the food the place ... love it all

This charming complex of chalets and other buildings is outwardly very laid back, but the owner, Vicente, and his wife are very attentive to your every whim without being intrusive. The pink-ochre painted chalets are pleasant but not luxurious, and are spacious enough for couples, with plenty of room to hang clothes, place suitcases, boots, shoes and so on. The electric shower was fine and all the plugs (120 V) worked. Our double bed was comfortable but luckily nights ran around 20 degrees C or so. It was great to sit out on the veranda or lie in the hammock watching the fireflies flitting about as night came on. Lots of frogs calling in the little gully back of our chalet, no mozzies though which was good. Breakfast was included in our daily rate (USD60) and consisted of papaya, pineapple, various cakes and sweet loaves, cheese and the typical 'pão de queijo' a small savory cheese puff best eaten hot. Tops was a wood burning stove with a hot plate on which you could fry your own eggs to your liking. All washed down with great coffee and milk, and guava, passion fruit or pineapple juice. We paid a little extra for dinner (USD20 for two) which was usually fairly simple but wholesome: lettuce, carrot, beet root, cucumber, rice, beans and a meat dish. Plenty to do during the day with trips to excellent water falls, trails, river beaches and pools with perfect directions from Vicente. Of course one cannot miss the Casca d'Anta waterfall in the Parque Nacional Serra da Canastra, and the great 3-km hike up the bluffs to the pools at the top. These can also be reached by car from the São Roque de Minas entrance about 20 km away. Not to be missed, the Cachoeira do Chinelo, and Cachoeira do Cerradão (waterfalls). In all a great stay. We were well looked after and enjoyed every minute.
