The hotel has the good fortune in being located in a very comfortable area of a fantastic city. They take full advantage of it! People are welcoming and helpful towards their guests, even those whose language is very different. 

The rooms are nice and they have all the amenities (except good coffee but I was an inveterate coffee drinker in a tea culture). 

The breakfasts were spectacular and they came with the payment for the room: A rich assortment of vegetables, meats, dairy products fantastically cooked. 

If you are going to China from the US, take cash to exchange for RMB (yuan) in case your atm card does not work and they do not accept your credit cards. The latter are not accepted everywhere, and you do not want to be bound to so-called “upscale” places. 

The subway is wonderful. You can buy your one-way ticket in automatic dispensers that use both Chinese and English (with romanized Chinese terms).  You can also buy a card that can be reused at a kiosk. If you just buy one-way tickets from an automatic dispenser, keep in mind that they are not round-trip. 

Don’t worry about getting lost or not understood. People will help you. Such was my experience of the city: A very kind place.

Excellent Breakfasts and Kind Personnel

If you don't mind staying a little off the beaten path, the Yu Long hotel - located on the west-side of Beijing in the Haidian district - provides four-star luxury at a fraction of the price of similar east-side hotels that are generally chosen by western tourists. Standards here are that of any high-end four star western hotel, and you'll find lovely common areas, excellent service, clean comfortable rooms and an extensive breakfast buffet.

What makes this hotel a feasible option for a visit to Beijing is that the Xidiaoyutai station of Subway Line 10 is directly across the street from the hotel. Subway line 10 connects to the Beijing Airport Express at Sanyuanqiao Station - making transfer to/from the airport very easy. Also there are several transfer stations within a stop or two of Xidiaoyutai which make getting to any of the major tourist sites a breeze. Line 10 is a loop line circling the city - so if you don't mind the ride - you can get to hot expat areas like San li tun without even having to transfer.

The surrounding neighborhood is safe, there are restaurants and grocery shops near the hotel and the Yu Long is close to many overlooked Beijing attractions - visits to which could greatly enhance your stay.

English is not readily spoken and you'll have to eat your breakfast with chop sticks - but hey - you're in China.

Affordable Luxury - Adjacent to Subway

Perhaps we just had bad luck, but toilet indeed had problems - first morning no way to flush the toilet!! Second night washing hands -basin did not empty! Very small refrigerator - not cold - had to be changed. breakfast - plenty of variety, but too Chinese!!! no fruits? Toaster broken. plenty of sweet cookies. Difficult to find what to eat - and we have lived in China for long... We were allowed to use neighbor hotel Swimming etc facilities... thatt's nice! just needs to walk abit, take your own towel, and not expect very much cleanliness... but ok to try once!  Bed was excellent!!!!! Staff were sure polite, spoke no English - be prepared.

If looking old China - that's it!

This hotel is tired stayed 1 night, not impressed!! especially when told that there was NO free bottles of water in the room. Never had this before when travelling throughout China.
Breakfast buffet was poor.
There are much better hotels in Beijing
