I am fortunate to be able to stay in a lot of hotels around the world, and I don't review them all, but I wanted to share this one, because it is in a great location for the Hangzhou East Train Station (with high speed trains that can take you all over China), and because the hotel really gives you local flavor, and a local neighborhood, for a very reasonable price, and with lovely service.

First of all, if you don't speak any Chinese at all, you might have some difficulty at the hotel, but the staff will try their best.  Second, if you are fussy about KTV (karaoke) going on until 11 or 12 at night, then this might not be for you.  But if you want to stay in a place that is really down home China, with pleasant everyday people who are very willing to serve you and to try to make you happy, then this is it.  

You are one bus stop away from Hangzhou East Station.  If you arrive at the station, and want a place to spend the night, head for the WEST bus station (it is clearly marked throughout the station), come out onto the circular loop where the buses stop, go to your LEFT, walk about 20 metres, and you will see the No. 28 bus stop.  Have RMB 2 ready to put in the box when you get on the bus.  Coins and/or paper will do.  After a 4 minute drive, get off at the FIRST stop.  Walk another 20 metres or so in the same direction that the bus was going, and you will see the hotel on your right, same side of the street.  I believe it has about 8 stories.  

It is not fancy, but it is comfortable.  From this hotel, you can go right outside, directly in front of the hotel, and take the B4 bus (RMB 4) to the city center.  Or you can stay in the neighborhood and enjoy the lively night market across the street, with green grocers, fresh fruit, and people enjoying themselves.  Along the road from the hotel on the same side of the side of the street is a WATSON'S, a nice pharmacy chain out of Hong Kong, at which you can buy necessities.

The reception are warm, friendly, and eager to help you.  The rest of the staff, like the security staff, will help you take your things to your room, and, in my case, will refuse a tip.  

It's not a typical 4-star, but it is in terms of the people.  And that's what matters, in my opinion.

Lovely Staff, and Great Location for Hangzhou East Railway Station

I checked into the hotel without prior reservation having arrived on the train at around 8pm, and after checking out all the nearby hotels, I paid 299 RMB for a twin-room at the Tianhai (which had mysteriously gone down by about 20 yuan over the course of the discussion with the front-desk).

The hotel looks like a throwback to the 1980s with red carpets and a foot message parlour. It also has a (very) noisy karaoke bar on the ground floor. Up on the fifth floor where I stayed, it was relatively peaceful though you can hear what the neighbours are saying.

The room itself was fine - good size, nice beds, plenty of plugs, good shower and decent wifi. No real complaints. Near enough to the metro stop, with plenty of shops, restaurants and the bus to Hangzhou East train station just outside the hotel (or you can walk there if the weather is nice).

Steer clear of the ground floor and you'll be fine

Australian with a Chinese wife. We arrived about 9 pm and were greeted by not so friendly reception staff with no English. Room was clean and tidy with no fridge. Bathroom facilities were good. Had poor  internet connection. In a quieter area but was lively at night. Stayed two nights but was overpriced for the facilities available. Okay for short stay.
