Everything about Maquenque  is set up to make your stay unforgettable - the location, the layout, the accommodation and the wildlife, but nothing surpasses the wonderful people at the Lodge, from the guides to those working in the restaurant, to those on reception. All were unfailingly kind, welcoming and determined to make sure we had the best possible experience.

First and foremost amongst these were our guides: Antonio (Tonito), who took us on morning and night-time hikes, delivered with great knowledge and great humour; Luis, who took us on a high-recommended raft trip down the 'Three Friends River', making  us feel part of a team of paddlers and delivering a hugely interesting commentary on the way; and Jerson, who took us on our last walk, completely changed his plans when he realised we might repeat previous experiences, and whose enthusiasm for and knowledge of the flora and fauna of the area, delivered with gentle wisdom, was captivating.

If you are staying here, do all you can to get one of the treehouses, which give you in every sense an elevated view of the area, and which - even for someone who is as afraid of heights as myself - offer an unforgettable experience. They're not luxury, but they have all you could reasonably need, and some on occasion much-needed privacy.

The lay-out of the grounds is such that we could easily have taken unaccompanied walks during the daytime and seen plenty, but having a knowledgable guide took the experience to the next level, particularly at night when most mortals would see nothing, but we saw a variety of frogs and bats, a nightjar and - perhaps most memorably - a tarantula.

We also did the coffee and chocolate tour, a fascinating (and it has to be said filling) way to spend a morning.

Food and drink were excellent, delivered in a welcoming and attentive environment and providing much-needed fuel for the day's endeavours, all in a restaurant opening out onto the Lodge's lake with an every-changing array of birds coming to eat fruit a few yards away.

An unforgettable stay

It is an amazing place to go disconnect and see birds. In the restaurant if you are there between the early morning and noon they got a small perch with fruits that attracts many kinds of birds to enjoy watching. 
We got a treehouse and during the night time it gets really dark if the moon isn't out, they give you flashlights which help you lots. The treehouse rooms were very comfortable, the fans and ac helped plenty to keep a very comfortable room during the night if it feels too hot. 
We also took the morning half day boat tour, which we got to see plenty of wildlife and birds, we even got to see 3 king vultures perching on a tall tree, I'm sad I didn't have a better camera to take a much nicer picture, but I attach a picture I managed to take with some binoculars.

Very recommended.

We (family of 4) stayed for 2 nights in the standard treehouses and had a fantastic stay.  The treehouses were more than adequate with a lovely view across the treetops.  We did the farm/coffee tour which was very informative and the kids enjoyed the participation elements.  We would also highly recommend the night walk.  Overall a great experience and well worth a visit.

Incredible experience

This is a beautiful property. This is a fully functioning organic farm and ranch. This resort provides tours of all type during your stay. Be aware that (like all of Costa Rica) ALL TOURS ARE RAIN OR SHINE. no refunds for torrential rainfall. Upon arriving, you must leave your vehicle, take your luggage in a boat across a river to access the resort. The resort has a beautiful restaurant with delicious food and home baked goods from a wood oven, their waiting staff was very friendly . The setting is fabulous given it is in the midst of the Rainforest. We stayed in the Tarzan Tree House. it was an amazing experience to be up in the massive trees where the howling Monkeys and Sloths live. We were not very impressed with their tours but the facility is Second to None!!

Incredible authentic rainforest experience

The location of this lodge is exceptional. Set on the San Carlos river in the north of Costa Rica there's a small ferry crossing to reach it (which makes it even more special). We have been to a lot of safari lodges in Africa and staying here was up there with the best of those. We stayed in a bungalow, and whilst the allure is for the Treehouses, the bungalows are excellent. Ours sat overlooking the lagoon with masses of shade to stay comfortable. The gardens around the main lodge are stunning and full of wildlife, and the trails are well maintained and accessible.For bird watchers this lodge is incredible. Fruit feeders sit outside the main lodge for easy viewing when eating or having a drink. Masses of great species gather there and keep everyone entertained. We did lots of the activities there from early morning bird watching, night rain forest walk and the best was the kayak 'floating' on the Three Amigos river for a morning. We came away having seen 50+ bird species, Cayman, crocs, turtles and coati. We had spa massages on the beautiful pontoon and canoed ourselves gently around the waters one later afternoon. Good food, exceptionally friendly staff and the Guides were very knowledgeable and brilliantly attentive. This is a top notch venue, not to be missed, or rushed!

Amazing lodge for nature immersion 

Absolutely incredible!  The property is amazing. You are truly staying in the jungle. We stayed in a treehouse and it was a bucket list for our family.  My daughter woke up to a monkey swinging by while my wife and I were on the morning bird tour. The bird tour was  excellent. Christian is a true expert. We saw over 50 species including multiple Toucans up close!  They went out of their way on New Years Eve to book us the Cocoa and coffee tour.  Antonio was also very knowledge and so much fun!  Our entire family LOVED all of it!  Such a special place.  Thank you to all the workers!  Pura Vida!

The jungle, the tours, the people, the treehouse, the food, everything was incredible!

We arrived at Maquenque and immediately got good vibes from the friendly boat skipper and the lovely walk from the jetty to reception with beautiful plants and humming birds. A friendly greeting from reception staff and a welcome drink. We had lunch whilst waiting for our room to be ready and immediately saw a toucan on the bird feeder and were blown away by the number of birds and we had only been there for 30 minutes! We then walked to our tree house and wow, it was amazing - up high in the trees with a jacuzzi bath on the deck and an indoor and outdoor shower. No a/c but the ceiling fans were fine. No wifi (in the tree house) but the wildlife and spider monkeys swinging by was more than enough entertainment!
We did the early morning bird watching tour with Christian which was fabulous. The night tour which was slightly disappointing as it was raining and we didn't see a great deal but that's nature for you! We also did the kayaking tour with Chino which was absolutely fabulous with howler monkeys in the trees above our heads and Iguanas warming up on the top of the trees, the jesus christ lizard and so many birds.
The lunches were lovely, wood fired pizzas were tasty and the evening meals were very good too and the portions were more than adequate for us! The breakfast was the only slightly disappointing part of our stay, limited selection and a lot of flies all over the fruit so I stuck to the freshly cooked omelettes which were nice.
ALL the staff were so friendly from the gardeners, housekeeping, reception, guides and waiters. They could not do enough to help us and were so helpful and accomodating, they helped make our stay at Maquenque and our introduction to Costa Rica perfect. We would not hesitate to recommend.

Wow, wow, wow!

This was a very special place for us. We wanted something off the beaten track that was unusual, full of wildlife but at the same time comfortable and with good service. This was exactly what we got. We were in a Treehouse which felt as if we were alone with the wildlife in the middle of the jungle.  The restaurant was beside a lagoon teeming with birds, caiman, turtles and coatis. The staff were attentive without being fawning and extremely helpful. The guides were very knowledgeable and made the tours so interesting.  I would recommend the lodge to anyone with a passion for wildlife.
