This is a wonderful location north of Mompiche, with several cabins on stilts over the high tide, and others set back, but larger. Breakfast was great - as well as other meals. Owners are very helpful. No fan or refrigerator in cabins, but wind from the ocean was great. Water is a bit salty, but have fresh water for drinking in bottles. No mosquito nets, but not necessary, insect coils worked fine. Really great place if you like to rough it a bit.

Really best to have a car to drive out beach when it is not high tide, but you can walk out there from town - about 45 minutes.

Great Rustic Cabanas Right on Beach

We stayed here a few weeks ago. This hostal is managed by volunteers that have little care for the place. There is no sweet water so the sheets are wet all the time and there is no place where you can wash the sold off. The food is hardly edible and the place is pretty dirty. I was hurt when we noticed the back of the plot where the waste is dumped right next to some beautiful mangrove forest. If you want to see vultures that is the place to look.

Only salt water, not clean, food poor

Thieves ransacked two cabañas taking cash and a cell phone while we were there, and the staff didn't seem to mind that much, which was suspicious. We had our valuables with us luckily, but our bags were rummaged.

The shower is saltwater which makes you feel sticky/slimy when it is hot and humid, a drag when you are trying to sleep. We had to travel to Quito salty. 

There was no maid service for the first three days so we cleaned the room ourselves. When we checked-in there was bat guano and dirt from the ceiling on the bed. Floors had that also plus sand. I moved the bed out from under the bat, and I changed the sheets. No fan. No shampoo provided, but it doesn't lather in seawater anyway. Other than pooping on us once, the bat was a quiet and entertaining roommate.

There are a couple surfboards for rent, both short boards under 6 feet. The waves were walled off when we were there, so body surfing was a great option.

The setting is awesome, right on a nice deserted beach. It is a 40 minute walk to get from/to town, but it is inaccessible at high tide. There is a stream crossing, so don't wear long pants. They should explain that on the website. On the way into the center of town, you will pass La Casona del Chef restaurant which was great. 

From town, a tuk-tuk will take you out there for five bucks... information you want if it is raining or hot.

I wouldn't complain if the price were 1/3 what they charged us. For the amount we paid, we expected hotel style service, not an overglorified tent. The "hotel" didn't appear to be mismanaged, rather unmanaged. There are other cabañas in the area, but I don't know how they are.

If you like cold beer, make sure they chill some for you well ahead of time. They only had one or two in the fridge overnight.

Thieves, poor service, no fresh water

Beautiful hostel, excellent staff, great location, located three kilometers down the beach from Mompiche. Be aware there is not hot water, which shouldn't be a problem for a short stay in at a secluded beach hostel.

My (female) friend and I decided to take an adventure vacation last July, 2014. I have to admit, I was a little nervous at first, mostly because of the reaction I received when I told others of our intention to visit South America. While some things were expectedly a bit different, we had an amazing time and any worries I had quickly went away. 
We rented a car in Quito and drove to the coast. The drive was magnificent. The scenery changed often, and there were plenty of small convenience stores, gas stations, and small towns along the way. I am however, glad that she drove, because in some areas driving at high speeds and frequent passing exists- along with plenty of road curves- so the drive is not for the faint of heart. This is definitely a drive that you would want to make as early in the day as possible. And remember- bring a roll of toilet paper for rest stops!  Also- the app Waze definitely helped us to get to our destination. 
When we arrived at the village, we were a bit confused as to where to go from there. It is true that you have to cross that small ocean pass like others described and somewhat like the picture- but having a small SUV, we made it across just fine. 
We each stayed in a honeymoon cabana, with our doors and hammock swing facing the ocean. I believe that when my friend made the reservation, she was asked to put half down as a deposit, but we did not encounter any issues. 
The beach and the ocean were just wonderful, and the sunset - it doesn't get much better than that. The cabanas are situated on a long, clean, beautiful, SECLUDED stretch of land. It is like camping in paradise. Each of these cabanas had a mosquito net, so neither of us had a problem. The cabanas were neat when we arrived- They had a small and efficient bathroom, and a bedroom with a couple of tables and lamps. If I wanted a hot shower I would have asked how to turn the warm water on- but didn't need to. The temperature at night was perfect for sleeping. This is a wonderful place to clear your head and really get off the grid. 
The owner and his sons are not just adorable- their service was absolutely excellent. 
Each morning we had fresh eggs, toast and jam, and coffee and juice. We ate outside facing the ocean morning and night.
For dinner, I remember the fish, shrimp, rice, and salad all being excellent. And of course, beer too. 
On our first full day, we went out on the water behind the guest house on the owners boat with another family. The ride to a small harbor was lovely and so was (watching others try out) the water sports. 
We came back with no tv or cell phones needed to enjoy the water, fresh air, and our surroundings. 
This is definitely a place you hope remains a tropical hidden secret.
