Emerson is a very nice guy, full of good vibes and recommendations to hike and discover his region that he loves. More than a professional mountain guide he is also an amazing artist who creates leather creations from bracelets to very fine horses saddles.
The place is the perfect refuge to visit imbabura region,climb cubilche or imbabura volcanos.
Fire, chalet ambiance, good coffee and food. Books and terrace. You feel in ur family. 
The village around is little but nice with some little typical restaurants, food shops nand little supermarkets. Lot of bucolic roads around

Perfect refuge in front of volcanos

This place is definetly a "refugio" and was the perfect stay for my hike to the Imbabura the next day. It feels really comfy with the chimney and the whole interior design. The owner Emerson really cares about his guests and gives a lot of important recommendations for hikes or other trips and does everything to offer you a nice stay.

A real "refugio"

We stayed in Terra Esperanza hosted by Emerson for 3-4 days.
The location is great to go hiking to Imbabura and some other areas. We picked the place because Emerson can take you to different hikes in the area which includes Imbabura, Cubilche, Ventanas, and a few others.
We enjoyed hiking a lot! Emerson is a good guide, and his dogs made us a great company! Hikes are a bit challenging but doable if you're acclimatized (though we didn't try Imbabura). See some photos from the hikes attached to the review.
The rooms are very basic. We stayed in a room for a couple but there are also shared rooms. The rooms don't have heating, so it may be cold at night (there are quite a few blankets to keep you warm, however). On the plus side, there are a couple of fireplaces to keep you warm!
The water in the shower is somewhat warm, so it is best to take shower during the day while it is not yet cold, and perhaps this could be an area for improvement by replacing the water heater. 
The views from the backyard, and just over the area, is amazing when there are no clouds.
Emerson's mom served us breakfast, lunch, and dinner which were great! By the way, there are not that many options available around the place, so it was  great that we didn't have to go searching for places to eat.
Overall, both Emerson and his mom were very welcoming and helpful. If we were to go hiking in this area of Ecuador, we'd stay here again!

Great place to stay for hiking on a low budget

Refugio Terra Esperanza is a rustic destination away from the more urban city of Ibarra. The owner Emerson is not only your very friendly host, he is also an accomplished alpine hiker and may serve as a guide if you wish. Staying at this location gives you the unique opportunity to be directly under the hiking trails for the volcanic Cerro Imbabura and Cerro Cubilche. The views of the landscape and mountain peaks from right in behind the hostal are amazing!

A unique hostal that is a hidden gem in the mountains

A charming place with a homely touch that invites you to feel comfortable, the people who attend are very friendly and do not hesitate to tell you anything you need, the stay is so comfortable that you feel at home from day one, tourists usually They stay more days than they expected, it has hot water, comfortable and warm beds, internet and other amenities, the town is charming and going for a walk in the morning is magical, you can feel the Andean style. Coming to this hostel has been one of the best decisions I could make for my trip, now the desire to return and live this magical experience arises within me. 100% recommended

A great place to feel homelike

I have been there two times, 2012 and i came back 2019 because it is like a home for me. Emerson and his mum (maria) are the most welcomming people. I spend great times here. Emerson is a great trekking guide who guides you to the near vocanos! And there is a reason why it is called "calle de la alegria" :) So when you want to experience a adventure far away from the beaten trek you are right!!!

Best hostel ever!!!

We found Emerson to be the perfect guide for Imbabura. He knew the climb very well, was cautious and safety conscious, and had a great attitude. We've climbed it before, and Emerson is our favorite guide! We felt we were in very good hands.

Emerson's the perfect guide for Imbabura!

I spent four days here and they were some of my best in Ecuador. Emerson is a great guy who spends a great deal of time and energy entertaining his guests. The hostel has a very warm and friendly atmosphere, and it's located close to a lot of interesting places. The hiking opportunities in the valley below are spectacular and the hostel is also located close to cheap comedores. If you are thinking of summiting Imbabura, Emerson makes a great guide.

Great experience staying here

We love to discover places like Terra Esperanza! It is always a great pleasure to meet people with loads of passion, devoted to their job and eager to grow and develop. Therefore it was such a great experience to stay with Emerson- the owner of the hostel and his family who turned out to be kind and hospitable people.

Terra Esperanza is located few kilometers away from the city of Ibarra. The neighborhood is very calm and charming so you can be sure that you will have a great rest.

The place is very colorful and full of life, on every wall you can find a little piece of art left by travelers and hostel’s friends. Our room had a window overlooking the patio and our bed was very comfortable.

We have spent our evenings in the common room talking in front of the fireplace and exchanging stories with other guests. In the morning we were enjoying the sun having a delicious breakfast and a cup of coffee.

Terra Esperanza is not only a hostel. It is also a handicraft shop where Emerson and his family produce the most beautiful clothes, jewelry, leather bags and much more! Everything of the best quality!

Emerson is also a very experienced mountain guide who led tourists and experienced travelers and climbers through many Ecuadorian mountains. If you feel like conquering one, you can be sure to be safe and have fun with Emerson. He will provide you with all the gear and prepare you for the adventure.

We had a wonderful time in Terra Esperanza and we are very thankful and happy that we could meet Emerson and his family!!

Cool place !!

Hello,

 i spent some days with Ermerson and his Mum in his refuge. It was a really nice experience. His Mum cooked for every day and it was really good, typical and varied. With Emerson and some of his friends we climbed the Cerro Cubilche and he gave me some advice and booked me a taxi for the next day when I climbed the Cerro Imbabura. The bed was comfortable.

We also spent some time next to the fire discussing about Ecuador and he took me to the climbing wall in Ibarra for a little session 

I really enjoyed my stay there, and if i could I would go back !
