This hotel is perfectly located across from the railway station which has direct links to Paris. Its also right next door to the Hertz car rental with parking directly outside. The hotel is clean with beds made and room cleaned each day. Fresh towels available as needed. Breakfast is basic but good and all that's needed to set you up for the day. A few minutes walk into the centre of beautiful Angoulême. This hotel is a gem.

House hunting trip

Accommodation is as advertised and fine but It is useful for travellers to know that you cannot check in between noon and 1400 hours on weekdays which is a nuisance if you arrive by train and with luggage at noon

Check in arrangements

Booked 3 nights. Stayed 1 and made an excuse to leave. Owner was used to it. Not surprised, made us wait for 2 hours although the door opened. Room basic. No tea/coffee making available. 2 white rooms. Souless. No amenities nearby to speak of.

눉The manager is very rude i turned up to check in but wasn't allowed to after 6pm found another hotel but then they took payment of my card for room evem know i couldnt check in and then i get abusive messages through booking.com from the manager. Please do not stay here find somewhere else look at the reviews on trip advisor I'm not the only one who has had to deal with this rude manager.who pretends they cant understand English and will only speak to you in French and you can only speak in French

Do not book this hotel

I booked this hotel for a one-night visit to Angouleme.  

I now see from other reviews that my BAD experience is pretty common at this terrible place.

As I arrived early I knew the hotel would not be able to show me to my room, but I expected that they would book me in, allow me to store my luggage, and eventually have access to my room in the early afternoon.  

The manager (?) owner (?) receptionist (?) finally came downstairs and told me the hotel was closed.  Yes ... I understood this ... The manger or whatever went on to tell me (I think) in very rapid French that the hotel was closed until 11.00.  My hearing / speaking of French is pretty good - but not fluent.  I asked the manager if I could leave my bag somewhere and this was arranged  He did not offer to check me in.  I asked (in French) for a city map and he gave me one and explained (in English) where I could go.  I told him (in French) that I would return later to finalise check-in procedures.  There was a sign in the lobby telling guests that they must vacate rooms by 1100.

About 1330 or 1400 I returned to the hotel knowing that world-wide the usual check-in time is between 1200 and 1500.  The hotel door was locked and a sign showed it would be locked until 1900.

I wanted to check in and to go to the toilet!  But apparently I would have to wait five or more hours to do so ...

In my hundreds of thousands of miles of world-wide travels over forty years, and my hundreds of world-wide hotels I have never found a place that locks its doors for six hours on a Sunday.  I later found that this not uncommon in this little town ... but I was unaware of it at the time.

Eventually I was able to summon the manager who was very very rude and told me repeatedly that the hotel was closed. I asked for my room key.  Monsieur - the hotel is closed.  He said that he had sent me a SMS - but this was not so - telling me of the hours of operation of Reception.  I did not receive any such SMS

However .... buried in the text of the confirmation email there were details of the bizarre closing hours ... but I had missed these ... as I had printed the confirmation voucher and not ploughed through the many pages of email text

In English I asked him to explain and was subjected to a tirade - "You must speak French to me.  When I am in England i will speak English.  Why do you speak English to me here?"

This further annoyed me as I had spoken French to him in the morning only to be told he could not understand me ... and he thus replied in English.  EVERY other French person I have spoken to in  my two-month journey has complimented me on my "excellent" French ... although I do acknowledge that they were perhaps being a bit generous in their praise ...

Finally I collected my bag, showed him my booking confirmation details in which there was no mention of this absurd six hour closure, and left to find another hotel.  The IBIS, just a short distance away, was welcoming, cheaper and more efficient.

The manager really gives the French and French hotels a bad name.

Don't stay here - or if you do - expect some sort of Inquisition.
