I researched hotels in Bayonne a few years ago and dismissed Hotel de la Gare as too basic.  But in an emergency this year I booked the cheapest room in the region and was pleasantly surprised.  The room was small and spartan but very clean.  My bed was comfortable and the bathroom was several degrees of luxury above the rest of the room.  My room was at the side of the hotel and very quiet but the front street is pedestrianised so noise shouldn't be a problem.  

A nice touch is shelves of books in several languages to read in the hallways.

No staff after 9pm and you have to let yourself in with a key-code for the front door but that worked fine for me.

It was better than it seemed for me

This is a terrible place.  Small rooms, nothing like the website photos, hardly space to sit on the toilet.  Toiletries amounted to one small bottle of gel for two people.  No heating on until we complained even though it had been snowing.  Steep, narrow stairs, no lift and no offer to help with your bags.  Worst of all, this man charges 5€ per day to put your bike in the garage, this is not mentioned on the website or the booking websites.  He even gave us a card on checkin saying that this was 'Gratuite pour clientes de l'hotel' but refused to honour it.  I would have walked away but having pre-booked would have lost all my money.  We are round the world cyclists, this was the end of a two year tour.  NO-ONE, ANYWHERE charges to keep the bikes safe overnight except this man, in Bayonne, in France, supposedly a cycling nation - SHAMEFUL.  Do not give this man your money, there are plenty of good places to stay in Bayonne where you will be treated with respect.

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID - especially if you are a cyclists!!!

Very near station which helped me start my journey to Santiago de compostella, I had a quick check in, it was a very clean hotel. I picked this hotel because of the reviews and information I read about it here on trip advisor.  I was not disappointed.

Just what I needed in order to kick start my Camino walk.

The localization is quite good; especially for those who travel by train - less than five minutes’ walk from the station. Also not far from the center, about 10 minutes on foot, on a beautiful path over the rivers.
Not so good was the room; though it had the shower and the lavatory, the toilet was in a very small compartment on the corridor. The bed was quite good and the hotel is very clean.
If they are not charging a very high price I advise you to book there otherwise it will be easy to find a hotel with better commodities.

Hotel with hostel features

Drove into Bayonne with our rental car on our way to San Sebastian, Spain. Looking for a place to spend the night. Tried to park at the train station, impossible. Found a small parking area across the street. We walked down a narrow street next to it, and there was a hotel. Walked in, booked a room. Room rate was 59 euro plus 8 euro for breakfast. We asked about parking (for our car) and she said it would be fine where it was overnight but they start charging at 8:30 AM. Perfect. This is an old building but the place has been thoroughly updated with new lighting and other amenities. The room was small and sparsely furnished, but it was fine for us. A large window opened onto the street below. The bartender/hotel clerk was a young lady who spoke perfect English and was very kind to us. Always greeted us with a smile. Breakfast in the morning was pretty good, basic petit dejuener. The morning shift person serving us breakfast apparently did not speak English at all and never said one word to us. Good service here and the rooms are fine for the price.
