Returned here a year after our first visit, to be welcomed by Marie-Solange Ferrand and her daughter Eliane with the same warmth as before.  Lovely table d'hote dinner (rabbit terrine, poulet basque, their own rosé, both bubbly and still) and a super breakfast.  Nothing is too much trouble for these two.  And the bedrooms make you feel you're staying with friends - art books abound, many pictures on the walls, it feels very personal.  A bit off the beaten track but worth the detour.  And Eliane, who does much of the cooking, charges ridiculously little for dinner (€16!)

Good conversation round the big dining table with the four other guests, who were all pilgrims walking part of the route to Santiago de Compostela.

A place to remember.

Same great welcome, same lovely food

We booked an overnight stop at Domaine de Benveau on the recommendation of our son and daughter in law who had stayed there a fortnight earlier.  It lived up to the enthusiastic description we had been given.  Nestling among trees in a small hollow in the Berry plain, the white limestone house is surrounded by a beautiful garden.  We were shown our rooms by the owner, Marie-Solange Ferrand, who runs the chambres d'hôtes with her daughter, and invited for pre-dinner drinks under the tulip tree in the garden.  Later a fine dinner was spread out on a big table, which we shared with a family from Belgium.  Traditional French cooking, accompanied by the owner's own sparkling wine and then by Sancerre red.  Rabbit paté, quiche and salads, followed by chicken and then by a mirabelle tart or sorbet.  Most of what we ate was home grown or reared.

The house is filled with paintings, many by Marie-Solange, and books on art, history and architecture.  Conversation flowed happily, children were given plenty of attention and we were immediately made to feel as if we were old friends.  Benveau is definitely a place we will go back to on our regular journeys across France.

A warm welcome and treated like family

Our small party stayed at Domaine Benveau (also known as Halte du Chemin de Vezelay) on our walk on the Vezelay Way. The family made us feel incredibly welcome and we were provided with beautifully prepared and presented meals. Our rooms in the old farm house were comfortable furnished with lots of probincial character. We learned about the operation of the farm, the fascinating family history and that of the nearby church in Ste Solange.

A very hospitable and authentic experience.

I think honesty is the best policy in this review, the host were amazing and friendly and really couldn't do enough for us. However, travelling with 3 children aged 15, 11 and 9, this was a little overwhelming. The youngster slept well but the others were a little frightened by all the books, pictures and ornaments in the room. I appreciate that it is a traditional French b and b and fantastic value for money but it was a bit much for an over active imagination. I only wish I had seen a similar review so I was pre warned as it actually frightened me too! As a couple we would have enjoyed the quirkiness but it really does appeal to a certain clientele. The views and gardens are amazing and as I've said, the hosts were so lovely but please be aware

Lovely welcome from the owner, he made us feel very comfortable and spoke excellent English. A cosy feel to this small chateau, some can feel cold and uninviting. Each room was decorated in a different style, very pretty décor and fittings . Our room had all the amenities advertised with an very comfortable bed. Good breakfast waited on by the owner in a lovely breakfast room, Typical continental fare, with plenty of coffee and homemade yoghurt and jams
