We enjoyed our stay at Chateau de Bresse sur Grosne. Yes there appears to be maintenance issues. Maintenance is often a problem for chateaus that are still in family hands in 21st century France. We stayed at another family owned chateau in the Loir Valley and the struggle to maintain such grand buildings existed there as well. If this concerns you then choose a hotel. Otherwise step inside Chateau de Bresse sur Grosne and you will not be disappointed. Our room was massive as was the modern ensuite bathroom. The king size comfortable bed combined with the peace and quiet of the rural France setting gave us some of the most restful sleep of our holiday. The chateau is owned and run by Isabelle de Murard and has been in the Murard de Saint Romain family since 1761. Isabelle was very welcoming. “Come and sit by the fire” she invited as I sat in the hallway checking my email on the complementary Wi-Fi. For breakfast Isabelle makes her own jams and fruit comports as well as a type of quince paste that goes with goats’ cheese all served with orange juice, fresh croissants, crusty bread and coffee. The chateau also produces its own wines. There is decent restaurants in the nearby villages of Chapaize (5 minutes) and Cormatin (10 minutes). Cluny is a 20 minute drive and places like Dijon and Beaune about an hour of pleasant driving to the north. Hotel stays are fine but they do start to meld together in your memory after a while. Our stay at the chateau was enjoyed immensely and isn’t something we shall ever forget. We would stay here again.

Loved It!

Stayed there for two nights as is has been part of our round trip and was highly recommended. The place itself is marvellous and really beautiful. Of course, there is still an awful lot of work to do to renovate the Château, but the necessities are mostly done though not all is in best order and needs at least sone dusting. But you feel like a chatelaine.
Unfortunately there is no highspeed internet as advertised, which is no problem at all but one should know. 
The owner especially he, try to make your stay as nice as possible but it does not always work out the way it should. There were moments of silence due to language barriers which made it sometimes hard to bear.
All in all it was good, but there is something missing which is hard to put in words……

Old Château

I read mixed reviews when I booked this and went with my gut, so happy I did as this place was amazing. Yes there is a few cobwebs and the standards are not to everyone's cup of tea but this place is wonderful and charming. The family welcomed me and my husband into their home and showed us to our bedroom which was like being a princess for the night, a bottle of their wine was waiting for us too. After having a look around the grounds we retreated to the garden for dinner where they came over to ask how we where and offered us a glass of their wine made just a few yards away which you can buy, we sure did the next day. If you want peace, traditional France charm then book asap. Ignore all the silly comments. 
Oh and make room for the yummy breakfast!

Castle escape

We were cycling along the Voie Verte and stayed overnight. The owners desperately need a visit from Ruth of the BBC program "Country house rescue" to lift their game. The complex is very large and suffering from lack of maintenance, there are leaking roofs and rotting timbers.

There is no food available in the town so for an evening meal you need to travel to a neighbouring town which we did not want to do because we were traveling by bicycle. We were told that there was a communal kitchen that we could use. The kitchen was filthy and had not been cleaned for a very long time, we pointed this out to the owners and we hope the situation will be rectified. The bedroom was an amazing authentically decorated room, the latch on the door did not work so we put a chair against the door to keep it shut. The bathroom was huge in a round tower. The view from the bathroom was great looking over the horses at the pond and over the country side. We actually took our chairs into the bathroom and sat looking at the view. The breakfast was great and enhanced by being served in the dining room. 

Would I recommend you to go there? It was amazing being able to stay in a real chateau and to experience what Ruth talks about in the TV program, you need to be able to overlook the rough edges though. 

Country house rescue needed

Amazing old castle with numerous outbuildings.  Yes there are maintenance issues such as broken windows in the outbuildings but our room had new very soundproof windows.   A large spacious room with a beautiful shower and claw foot bath tub.  A lovely breakfast with huge croissants and home made jams.  Just note it is cash only!  
The chateau could be spectacular if there was some major funding.  I hope the government will help preserve it because the small chapel was beautiful.  
In a beautiful part of rural France a short drive to two excellent restaurants in Chapaize.

Stay in a real castle!

My wife and I had very good 3 night stay. It was a special experience of staying in such a historical building and site that we won't forget. Site also includes a 12th century church. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Marthe for her kindness and care. Breakfast was very good. Its location helped us to experience local life. There is a Sunday morning market right next door. Decent restaurants nearby (e.g. at Cormatin village). Guests are free to wander at the large complex and marvel at the historical buildings and landscape. Maintenance issues did not bother us. It is not easy to maintain all parts of such a massive complex. Wifi is available in hallway not inside the rooms, I think due to stone walls.
