My wife, 8-year-old daughter and I planned to stay here two nights. We stayed one, and it was so bad we paid to stay the second night elsewhere.

Pros:
- location is in the center of Brive (but this can be a Con once you experience center of Brive)
- service is OK... not great, but the people try to be nice even though they seem quite aware of the problems the hotel has - but they are understaffed, which led to additional Cons (below)... they were still nicer than others we met in Brive...
- food is excellent... in fact the restaurant is fantastic, but this is henceforth a review of the HOTEL only! (I would return to eat, but most definitely not to sleep)
- price is low, particularly for the center of Brive

Cons:
- ugly, old wallpaper falling of the walls
- shower not enclosed, meaning water escapes into the rest of the bathroom
- shower top corroded and dirty, meaning water went sideways everywhere (at least there was low pressure?)
- we thought there was no hot water... actually it just takes about 10 minutes to warm up... they feel like a long 10 minutes
- dirty mirrors, dirty everything
- bed physically depressed
- couldn't use phone (and yes, I speak French fluently and did everything the instructions said - wasted too much time trying to figure out the phone!)
- LOUD - we were right on the street and, apparently, drunk and angry teens and young 20-somethings like to congregate in an urban nook of sorts right next to the hotel
- windows don't close fully, letting in sound and even rain
- windows don't lock, raising security issues (being on the second floor by an easily scalable gate and overhearing macho guys discuss their exploits in the streets had me more concerned than I normally would be - the one time in France I was happy my wife and daughter didn't know French...)
- door lock is finicky... whole door had to be finessed to be closed fully without breaking the thing - probably due to the bad repaint job
- only 1 key
- Darkness! no lighting in hallway at night... there was a switch, but to get to where I thought the switch was, in the dark, I nearly fell down a tiny flight of about 4 steps from one hallway to the next (this is seriously a lawsuit waiting to happen)
- no elevator, twisted stairs, and no help with bags
- cancellation difficulties... our friend, who left after Day 1 (which we wound up doing, too) was originally told, in person, that he could not cancel in person - he could cancel on the internet only... he was already so fed up with the place (and the service, in his opinion), that he actually got pretty angry at these people until they backed down and let him cancel

Even the low price was not enough to justify how awful this place was - and even for me! It just physically looks like it's completely falling apart - zero comfort would be an understatement. My wife has much higher standards and she wanted out the second we went up to the second floor... We stayed because family recommended the place, but apparently family had never stayed there - they only knew the restaurant (which is great). The hotel was so bad was left on day 2, for another hotel 1 minute away. The new hotel was double the price, but quadruple the quality.

Unfortunately, my wife and I didn't really like Brive itself, which is probably part of why we disliked the hotel so much (or vice-versa, perhaps...). The only reason we would return to Brive would be to see friends there.

Awful Experience 

This hotel is in a great location in a nice old building, and the welcome was pleasant enough.  And, in its favour, the beds were very comfortable, and the breakfast was quite generous.  However, for the price they are charging here (I paid 50 euros for a single room + breakfast, off-season with almost no other guests there), the condition of the rooms is just awful.  I wasn't expecting luxury and I'm not overly fussy about hotels, but the overall impression here was of shabbiness and neglect, not faded grandeur.  Discoloured 1970s wallpaper, threadbare carpets, dingy lighting, paintwork all grey and cracked and peeling...  I've seen better in cheap British B&Bs, for half the price.  Also, the walls between the rooms are paper thin, so you can hear everything from the room next door.  Very disappointing - I won't be staying here again.

Shabby (without the chic)

at the entrance everything seemed "normal" but already climbing the creaky carpet stairs to get to the first floor we had the first doubts about the choice, confirmed then by the corridor.  carpeted with stained carpet (so everywhere even in the room), swollen and cracked and stained walls (so everywhere even in the room).  we go to the room thinking now to be part of the remake of Shining, or you will unknowingly participate in a reality show, like "chasing ghosts".  the door is the bottom one in the corridor and it opens with difficulty - perhaps because of the broken handle ?!  - the smell in the room was stale, we immediately opened the shutters and the room came to us.  under every standard of hygiene and presentation.  indecent and unspeakable, but brave and above all tired from the journey we choose to stay.  we wake up, a nice cold shower (an optional hot water) and we go down to have breakfast.  Apparently we are not the only ones but the other guests are all French, it was to be expected.  The breakfast is basic, the minimum proposed, then the surprise, was not included in the reservation and they ask us € 8 each, which we had not been told and was not specified.  Before leaving, I explain to the owner everything I thought about the hotel, but she doesn't even mention an answer.  96 € in 3 people, for one night in the worst room ever seen.  what pisses off is that probably everything is "normal" for them.

What can I say? Dreadful doesn’t cover it. The rooms were worse than shabby - dirty old carpets wallpaper hanging off the walls- especially in the bathroom. Don’t the owners notice this? It looks nothing like the photos.

Don’t stay here

Booked thru booking.com. All good. However on arrival seriously disappointed with standards of the hotel. But it was cheap so had to bite the bullet. However took a walk into town for a couple of beers and on return found hotel fully secure. At 10:30. Eventually managed to get access at midnight. The bell does not work. Banging on the door is a waste of time. And telling off from the manager after numerous calls did not endear me to their customer service. This is a place to be avoided if you want to enjoy your holiday. 

Pay a little more and stay elsewhere. I booked for four nights but will leave after one.

Rooms are dingy, tired and cold with a damp smell. Shower is a stand-alone type cubicle and decor very poor. 

I like to be fair in reviews but I cannot find anything positive to say about this place. 

I would never recommend this place and will never return. Probably the worst hotel I have ever used. 

Don’t do it 

Welcome to the ideal movie set for Psycho II or Shining II. Brrrrrr!

When you enter the lobby you are walking into a world with an odour of old, cold fat. Yummy!  The lady at the reception is absolutely friendly. No doubt  about that. After getting the room key (a key straight  outta the beginning of the last century) the survival  trip starts. My room was on the 2nd floor. The doorknob was more or less still hanging on the door. The was room was quite, dark even after switching on all the lights. I think it's caused by the 60ies wallpaper which is probably still remaiming from that time. Even the ceiling was decorated with this wallpaper. At many places the wallpaper was rubbed of the wall.
The night was horrible. There's a tiny radiator - and even with two blankets (old and shabby) I was freezing. Even on the corridor outside it was warmer.
Coming back to the tidiness: I found several hairs of different other people under the pillow. The night table was covered with dust. The sanitary was "okay", if you don't have any expectations and if you can ignore the mildew on the rubber of shower doors.
Breakfast: Almost everything, means butter, Joghurt, etc. is close before the "Best before" expiration date. On my Joghurt it was mildew on the outside of the cup. 
The breakfast is matching completely to the full impression of this so called hotel.

Result: Never ever again! Check out the website. It's no coincidence that there are no photos of the rooms shown! BEWARE!
