What a surprise. An old building in a champagne house with just 2 very modern comfortable bedrooms. The breakfast was outstanding. We were made so very welcome and one day we sat in the pretty garden and without asking we were served tea and cake.  The wine tasting was both informative and interesting.  Yes, we did buy some.

Wonderful!

Myself and my wife visit Champagne 2 to 3 times each year and whilst we have visited the Cote De Blanc for tastings we have never considered staying in the area as we’ve preferred to stay in either Epernay or Reims. This was a real discovery as not only did we get to taste some excellent champagne but we also stayed on site within the most fantastically converted barn. The accommodation and decor is first rate and certainly better than any of our experiences in Epernay. Our host, Jacqueline was exceptionally friendly and extremely knowledgeable on the subject of champagne. We dined locally in Vertus, where you have a handful of choices. We enjoyed a very good breakfast before departing for London. Well done & thank you Jaqueline! 

A real discovery 

This is a small and perfectly formed bed & breakfast that offers so much more on every level.

Tucked away just a short step from centre of the town with just a couple of rooms in a recently converted barn.  Beautifully done to a very high standard with an airy breakfast room come lounge below and off street parking makes for a perfect combination.  Add the proximity to some good restaurants and the wonderfully friendly, helpful, caring and enthusiastic staff and family who own this B&B and it becomes too good to miss.
We were exceptionally fortunate to visit towards the end of the grape harvest a time when, you might think, the owners of a vineyard would be too busy to be especially attentive.  Nothing could have been further from the reality.  We were welcomed with a tasting of their lovey champagnes, when asked what we were planning for dinner we said we were hoping to eat in the town.  We were advised the best couple of restaurants were closed on a Monday and then offered the option to join the family and their grape pickers for their communal supper.  What a treat this turned out to be, good wholesome food with convivial conversation helping us to understand in greater depth the life of champagne maker’s from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.
How do you top that? 
We were offered a visit to the press to see how the grapes are processed and then into the winery where the grape juice has it’s first fermentation.  We were then whisked off to the vineyards and allowed, if we wanted to, to join the grape harvest.  Brilliant for an hour but I’m not sure a week of this back breaking work would be my idea of a holiday!
A break for lunch and then a special wine tasting with Gregory and Alexia, the next generation of Mailliard winemakers who gave us an even more in-depth view of their champagnes.
Clearly some of our experiences are dependant on the time of year but the warmth of the hospitality shown would remain whenever visiting.
A long review but L’Atelier de Degustation (The Tasting Workshop) is worth every word and every penny of its modest rate.

Exceptional

We stayed here for 3 nights, coincidentally just during the harvest period. Extremely friendly and aimable owner Jacqueline, who made us feel like part of the family. The buiding l' Atelier de Degustation in vertus was recently renovated with attention to detail and not saving any cost. The room (with view on the garden) was very spacious, quiet and nicely decorated. There are only 2 rooms, and we were told they are seperated by a very thick wall to isolate the sound. They have airco in case of hot weather. The breakfast was amazing, fresh bread and pastries, freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee, tea, yoghurts, cereals, marmelades ... The champagne tasting at the end was the cherry on the cake. Thanks for this experience !

Can we give 6 points ?

A beautiful place to stay away from the main centres of Champagne. The rooms are huge, clean and stylishly done out. During our first stay Gregory was kind enough to do a private tasting with us. It was fascinating to hear the history of the vineyard and the day to day running. The Champagne produced is excellent and has now become our first choice! We have just enjoyed our second stay and are stocking up with some more!

The real Champagne

Large rooms in full luxury. Very clean. Super friendly owners with professional and experienced explanation. 

For the Dutch speakers: it’s the native language of the lady of the house. 

Last but not least. The Maillaird champagne is of top quality.
