This is the type of hotel for one night when all you need is a bed and aren't in need of a long relaxing shower. Everything was old and resonably clean but not spotless.  The TV was minature, and wifi patchy and slow (bit better downstairs).  Continental breakfast was mostly cereal, bread and croissants.  The position is very handy to climb up the steps to the old town (funicular is no longer operating as of end of Aug 2016, we missed it by a week), station and restaurants and bars. They also have a large garage at the back where we were able to store bikes.

The hotel is next to the railway station and is a cheaper option in town. The owner was very friendly and seemed to be smiling all the time 

The room was a bit smallish and looked very worn and was not so clean.

The old town of Laon with the Cathedral lies on the hill above and can be reached by foot or with a sort of tram that starts near the railway station

A bit worn but always smiling owner

This small and unpretentious hotel is right outside Laon station. The interior is rather stuffy and was uncomfortably humid on a warm day - but as it is an older building it was possible to deal with that by opening windows and shutters. Decor rather faded, but the wi-fi worked, the room was clean and (unlike the new chain hotel I used the night before) the bathroom had both a razor socket and a plug for the wash basin. Traditional French breakfast of croissant and a slice of baguette. Perfectly OK for one night.

Great location for train travellers

Stayed here on Sunday night on the way back from a flying trip to Germany, having stayed here a few years ago. Must say that in the meantime they havn't spent any money on the place, but it was clean and comfortable. 
A peculiarity is that there is no key to the outside door & what wasn't explained that a code on the back of the room key fob had to be entered into a key pad by the door to get back in.(luckly my mate had worked it out & was expecting my call for help at 3.30 in the morning - doh).
A bit on the pricey side for a single traveller.
Also a hell of a treck up to the old town via some incredible stairs - there is a  funicular railway but not sure how often it runs :-)

bit run down & in need of modernisation

The money was stolen from the room.Won't recommend to stay there. If you can avoid this hotel,please do that.We went out to see the old town in the evening, and when we came back i missed my 160 pound what was left in  a small tiny pocket of my bag. It is good i didn't notice it before i went to  bed  so i could sleep at night,the bed wasn't comfortable though...Toldl  to owner in the morning,but he did't speak any English and i did't tell to police,cos of the short of time,we had to rush to ferry...
