Lovely little town.  Very nice accommodation and eaterie.  Natives very friendly, thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Wifi excellent and parking no problem.  Nice stopover, would visit again.

Note.....The other bar in the village lumped us up a bit for a couple of beers....dunno why people do this!

Nice Village, People and Food.

Having driven nearly 400 miles today on our journey South we eventually pulled into the very rustic town square in Poncin where the Hotel and Restaurant du Centre beckoned. I had specifically chosen a place with board and lodging under the same roof for our Sunday stop to ensure that we got an evening meal. The hotel does not look like anything to write home about from the outside. Like the rest of the town it is somewhat careworn but charming at the same time. It is always encouraging to see an eaterie full of contented but not wealthy looking locals. Internally the bar area is clearly a work in progress but the staff are friendly and helpful (although no English is spoken) and we were impressed by our rooms which are clean and bright, have modern bathrooms and to our son's delight, air conditioning! 
Having looked up the menu last night I had been salivating over the anticipated moules all day and was not disappointed. A huge bucket of them appeared, drenched in a wonderful cream and garlic sauce. The others both had huge and delicious home baked pizza. 
We had a good nights sleep thanks to a comfortable bed and unexpectedly sound proof windows. When we eventually stepped out in the morning the market was already well under way and as we munched our very good croissants we had the chance to watch French village life working in, effectively, the same way that it has done for centuries. Local traders bringing in their wares for local buyers in this weekly communal activity all surrounded by the pollarded plane trees and done under the watchful facade of the grand Hotel de Ville with its flags and small town importance. Equally fascinating to watch were the swarms of swifts darting in and out of their nests built into every nook and crevice of the empty building opposite the hotel, busily feeding their broods of noisy chicks.
Three adults staying in two ensuite rooms with 2 course dinner, drinks and breakfast came to €180 - great value I'd say.


Great stopover

We stopped here for one night with our dog. Parking is available free right outside, but it is a public car park so you need to get there ideally by about 5pm to guarantee a space. I'm not sure where alternative parking is available. You check in in the restaurant and are taken across the road to a converted house. The rooms are functional but given the price obvioously not anything amazing. They are, however, clean. Be aware a steep staircase leads you to the rooms so a large heavy suitcase is not ideal. Free Wi-Fi is available in the rooms and works well, althought I didn't try streaming - just general browsing. The restaurant is more of a pizzeria but serves good quality and fairly priced food. It's an ideal place to eat as the surrounding establishments are mostly takeaways. You can also pay for the room along with your dinner meal if you choose making checking out that bit quicker if you have a long journey the next day. All in all a good place to rest your head, and eat beforehand. Breakfasts are served in the cafe and consist of a slice of baguette, a croissant and spreads.

Food and a bed

This hotel offers the worst service I’ve ever experienced.
The day of our arrival to our booked and prepaid room, we faced heavy snow conditions in the road. We guessed that we could arrive later than expected. In principle, we were supposed to arrive before 23:00.
As of 21:00 we tried to contact the hotel by phone, many times. Only an automatic answering machine replied, stating that no messages were recorded.  Facing the impossibility to contact any human being, we even sent an email (in French).
We arrived shortly after 23:00. The closed door of the hotel showed a message stating that you should pick the keys before 24:00. Of course, nobody to talk to, and no replies on the phone.
We had to leave the town with our baby and our other small daughter and find in another town 25km away a hotel with normal service.
A hotel with good service would have contact us to check whether we had any problem.  Still, I can understand that they did not bother to contact me and that they simply close the shop when they are bored of their customers. However, I find absolutely unacceptable that they did not pick the phone during business hours. We could have found another hotel much earlier if they simply would have replied on the phone.
I am writing this report one week later. We have still not received any reply, any explanation, any apology, nothing.
