We all had the three course menu with goat cheese on toast and salad as starter, duck with potatoes as main and some cake as dessert. Very nice, super price (17€) and good service. Good choice. Especially when you look at the usual prices at this place. 

Good price/performance ratio

We had unfortunatedly the rooms in the attic and a very high temperature weekend so, you can imagine it was very hot and no air condition but the restaurant really convinced us with high standards of cooking. Service was also very attentive and friendly. Here you can truly find the old charm of Alsacian lodging.

Family Hotel with Charm

We did not stay in the hotel but had a lunch in the restaurant. The food is Alsacian but less traditional and more contemporary. We had a three course menu that was attractively priced. The first course which was a mixed green salad with walnuts and a thinly sliced cured meat was delightful. The second course of a creamed chicken pastry was only average. Dessert was ice cream with diced peaches, a raspberry sauce, whipped cream, and a thin sliver of chocolate. The approach to cooking here is a little more ambitious than the average mid range in price restaurant along the Route des Vins. The result was better than average but a little shy of very good. A 3.5 rating would be accurate but I will round up for effort and not a lot of options in this picturesque village. Ambience was pleasant. We would eat here again if in the area.

Nice Dining Option in Less Touristed Alsace Village

We visited the Hotel Restaurant Gilg with another couple - friends from Germany who had the language skills we lack.  They have been coming to this place once or twice per year for some 15 years to enjoy the medieval atmosphere, fine local wines and great food.  We have to agree that the two dinner meals we had at the Gilg were exceptionally good.  You must try the goose liver pate starter as some of the best in the world, but no plate was less than spectacular.  The local Gilg white wines were great with the fish and lighter fare, while we preferred other Alsace red wine for the heavier meat fare.  Prices were moderate if taken a la carte, but there were good values in the fixed price menu choices as well.  Service was attentive French with a German flair, as is reflective of the region.

The Gilg hotel is small and without modern conveniences such as an elevator, but this helped with the atmosphere.  As other reviewers have written, some of the larger rooms are in the front of the building, but since there is no air conditioning one must also consider the noise levels from street activity below with open windows.  During our stay near mid-summer with long days, the noise outside was a factor in limiting our sleep -- particularly the wedding party across the street (not the hotel's fault, in any case).  Breakfasts were fine and very inexpensive and included eggs to order upon request of the guest.  

Bottom line:  a great place to spend a night or two in historic Alsace at the Gild Hotel and a wonderful place to dine for the rest of your life in Alsace.  Highly recommended.

Hotel OK, Restaurant Out of this World Great

Had been here a couple of times before.
Hotel was full,( always great and very resonably priced) so we stayed around the corner and came to diner sunday evening.
Wierd to be the only ones in the restaurant???
Diner was fine but very traditional and with heavy sauces etc.
Price was quiet high. Creme brulee was curdled.
Seems like its becoming too much of a good old old old fashioned place.

Hotel full, restaurant empty

Hotel - this hotel consists of several buildings with convoluted passageways. There is no elevator, so you must climb a worn, circular stairway to get to your room. There is no one to help with your bags. Our room, number 5, was spacious and bright and filled with modern furniture. The bathroom had been modernized, with a tub and hand held shower with no shower curtain. There was water everywhere after a shower. The wifi in the room was non existent. The only wifi in the hotel was in the lobby and it was weak and frequently disconnected. The proprietor, when asked for help shrugged her shoulders. 

Restaurant - the food was good, but not gourmet.  It was not the same quality we remembered from a previous visit. It was not Alsatian, but a fusion of unusual flavors. It seemed the chef was making a name for himself by creating unusual dishes. We ate elsewhere our second night. 

With so many great accommodations and restaurants in Alsace, we will not return to this hotel.
