My room, number 8, all the way at the top of the winding stairway and behind a sort of anteroom was a medieval treat. The bed was comfortable and I loved the view from my window. I am a romantic at heart and appreciate ambiance more than modernity. The old timberwork gave the room the feel of many centuries ago while the bathroom provided comforts they would have lacked. The manager was gracious, and while he spoke no English and my French is hit-and-miss, he took care of our needs. Before we left we showed him the picture of the people in our copy of the novel Chateau of Secrets, which was set there, and explained that one of our group was from a family named Agnew, from that region before the Norman Conquest, and he offered to show us the old kitchen and the chapel, very interesting. Breakfast was as good as any that we had during our stay in France. Boiled eggs, cheeses, sliced ham, bread and butter, croissants, pastries, fruits, and also coffee and hot chocolate (upon request the night before) all served with typically great French hospitality.
Things to know:
1. 6pm check-in means you check in at 6pm. We tried to leave our things off when we arrived early in the afternoon and before we went to Normandy.
2. If you're there on the weekend, the restaurant will probably be booked up. The manager called to make us a reservation, but it was too late. In Agneaux, all the restaurants except one that was not to the taste of one of our group were booked up that evening. A very kind young Frenchman we asked on the street said there should be openings in St. Lo and led us to a very nice Brasserie, saying he was going that way anyway.
3. Try to learn a little French before you go. I had forgotten all I had learned in high school (1961-63) and decided to use Babbel for a few months before the trip. It came in handy in many places and made my enjoyment of the trip much deeper. Yes, many French people know basic English, and some are quite good, but it's helpful to have a link to those who want to be gracious to you but who know no English. Why should they, after all? They live in France.

Atmosphere, Atmosphere, Atmosphere!

Spent 3 days during the 75th Anniversary of D-Day Celebration... Great location to visit the historic sites and the hotel is in a spectacular chateau. Our group really enjoyed the hospitality of Mr. Rene and his staff. We would love to stay in this hotel again.

Charming Chateau - Warm & Friendly Staff

A charming chateau off the beaten track! It really is a step back in time and it was a great place to stay.
The manager was charming and immediately made us feel welcome. It’s not 5 star with all the mod cons; but that’s not why we chose it! It’s a step back in time and a great place to switch off!

Beautiful chateau

People on here are complaining about the mustiness, bugs and staircases - well, it’s HUNDREDS of years old. Do you want to stay in a place that is original on the outside, but completely modernized on the inside? If yes, then this isn’t for you. But if you want to stay in a place that has retained the same charm as the day it was built (plus indoor plumbing and electricity) then this is what you get. The windows aren’t going to have screens, so if you open it - an occasional fly might come in. Screens can’t be built into these windows. We slept with the windows open and never saw more than one or two flies. The staircase is steep and concerning at times, but that’s the original staircase and I felt like I was having an authentic experience instead of a manufactured one. My suitcase was heavy, yes, but I am an adult that packed this and I should be responsible for carrying it. And the mustiness? Again, it’s HUNDREDS of years old - what do you expect? It’s never going to smell or feel like a spa resort. You’re getting EXACTLY what you book. There is no promise of a five star hotel with luxury accommodations. We had an absolutely lovely, quiet stay. The breakfast was delicious and very filling - plenty of cheese and breads. Coffee, juice, tea, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, cereal, etc. The owner didn’t speak English, but he was kind and friendly. He also held the bottom of my bag when going up the stairs. The room was clean, the bathroom was clean and stocked. Was there dust? Yes. Is there dust in my own house? Yes. Dust happens. This is a very old building, expect as such. My point here is that if this experience is not for you - do not book it. It’s not fair to hold the hotel to your standards when they aren’t the standards for this type of stay. It’s a unique, one of a kind experience. We enjoyed taking in the architecture and historic feel and are certainly thankful for the experience.

READ THIS REVIEW FIRST

If you look for comfort and modern equipments you shold probably book your Hotel somewhere else. There is dust, dead flies and wifi which dont work well as other guests has described. A stay here will also be a challenge for disabled people. The stairs in the Tower house are narrow and the ceiling height is very low. But this Chateau has also a charm you dont find many other places and has a great history which takes you back in time. Take a look at the surroundings, and you find that the buildings belong together and has been connected with a fence/wall that protected the area. The Chateau was a noble residence until 1970 when the last Marquess de Sainte-Marie passed away. For information about the history of the chateau please note that the original name is Château de Sainte-Marie. The nearby restaurant La Ferme du Château, is in walking distance and an excellent choice. You should do booking of a table in advance since the restaurant has room for a limited number of guests.

Chateau with a great past

We stayed on our way home from the south as a stop off to spend time looking around the museums. We were slightly concerned after some of the other reviews but need not have worried.  Ok the Chateau could do with a bit of a facelift in the rooms but it is a beautiful building and so quiet in a lovely setting.  Mr Groult emailed us in the morning to check our anticipated arrival time and was waiting to meet us.  No - he doesn’t speak English - but we are in France after all - and we all managed with our fairly basic French!
The restaurant in the barn was great - one of the best meals we had in our time away - do book though as it was very busy both lunchtime and in the evening.  We would recommend staying here - it is a charming place, very french and as long as you go with that attitude you will love it!

Charming old chateau

Fabulous walking and cycling trails below the Manor. Stayed there because its  the home of my ancestors. Beautiful rooms but the owner operator doesn't speak too much English so if you don't speak a little French you'll miss out on fabulous referrals to restaurants and towns  heading west to the coast via Coutances to Granville and  Agon Countainville for fab cafes and enjoyable swimming. Head to Granville for fabulous Sunday dinners at multiple restaurants starting 7 pm. Only other restaurant open on Sunday night was back in St. Lo but Granville offers so  many sites to see.  Back at Chateau d'Agneaux additional charges for breakfast should not be there at all. Too expensive. Also bring your own wine, juice, snack supplies as zero offerings on site. Following along the river below is fabulous though. Try to make affordable arrangements for bikes as  the French charge way too much sadly for renting theirs. None available at the property. All aside this is a beautiful authentic property and the valley amazing. We however preferred Chateau Isle de Mer also an Agneaux family property just north between  Chef du Pont and Picauville  very close to St.Marie Eglise which is a way better location for those visiting Utah Beach, Bayeux etc. .   

Beautiful Location, lots of potential

Arrived at 7.45pm after several host chases to decide on arrival time (replied to each). Place was deserted, spent 15mins wandering around shouting for attention. Eventually host (owner?) appeared and took 195euro (one night one person king room garden view no breakfast). Host continued to babble away in French despite being told ‘non parlez vous francais’. He then showed me room number with his fingers and pointed at a tower some 25m away by some tatty garages, I was pointed in that direction and left. Room was NOT in the chateau. After establishing the block had no electricity I returned to chateau where problem was resolved. Room was large and had been converted in what looked like the 1970’s and left since. I have stayed in numerous French chateau with faded grandeur, this was not that. View of valley from one window, garages from other. Not what I was expecting/mislead, poor value for money. Wouldn’t return or recommend.

2 star accommodation at 5 star prices

We made a reservation to stay 5 nights at this hotel in January.  In April we received an email from Hotels.com telling us that our reservation had been modified and we needed to contact the Hotel to resolve the issue.  We called and emailed multiple times, but never received a response.  After Hotels.com checked, we were told our reservation was fine.

The night before we were to check in we received an email from the hotel while we were still in Paris saying we could only stay 3 nights at the hotel.  We could not stay the five nights we had reserved and prepaid for.  

We made another reservation for two nights, based on this email.  But when we checked in the next day, we were told we could stay 5 nights.  When we said we had received an email the night before saying we could only stay 3 nights and we had made a nonrefundable reservation at another hotel, we were told we'd be made whole before we left.  

After checking with the hotel staff multiple times over the next days, they never refunded us the 180 euros we lost on the other hotel.  Since returning home, they refuse to answer emails.

Very unresponsive and incompetent.  I had to point out my name to the owner in his reservation book when we were checking in.  

This is unrelated to the cold drafty rooms with no wifi or TV.

It's now been over a month since we were promised a refund and we're still waiting...

Don't Stay Here!

When we arrived at the property the owner wasn't there.  There were people putting up a wedding marquee in the garden and nobody knew who the owner was or his whereabouts.   I left two messages on his phone and he didn't respond to either.  I had to book elsewhere which was not easy considering there were a large amount of weddings going on that weekend.  Another guest who arrived at the same time had the same problem.  When contacted by another party, the owner lied and said we hadn't shown up.  How unbelievably dishonest is that! This place should be taken off TripAdvisor.
