We highly recommend a stay at Gites de Brives. My husband, two boys (3 and 1 yr old) and I stayed for seven nights in Phil and Glyn's wonderful La Grange gite. The gite was very well equipped (even including a blender to mash up baby food), and we were also provided with a stairgate, highchair, cot and paddling pool which made it very easy with the kids. We arrived in desperate need of rest and relaxation and we got everything we needed from our stay. The gites are super quiet and dark at night, with very comfortable beds so we all slept very well. The pool was lovely and made for a very refreshing dip on a hot day. The whole site was great (and very safe) for our 3 yr old to run around in and burn off some energy. We spent a lot of time relaxing around the site but also had great trips out to La Palmyre (beautiful beach, very suitable for little children and great, safe cycle tracks) and La Rochelle (lovely harbour front, with a brilliant kids playground and a wonderful aquarium). We also did a tour of the Remy Martin site very nearby which we loved (not sure the kids were so bothered...). Phil and Glyn are fantastic hosts and were extremely helpful. They manage to strike a perfect balance between being there when you need them but not being intrusive at all!

Wonderful, relaxing family holiday

We have just returned home after enjoying two amazing weeks at Gites de Brives. After reading all the other reviews on the website my expectations were very high and I am pleased to say I was not disappointed. We (me, my husband and our two sons aged 15 and 12) stayed in Le Figuier, which is right next to the pool. The gite had plenty of space, was well equipped and nicely decorated.  The private patio had the sun on it all day and we particularly enjoyed eating delicious pastries there in the morning, which we purchased from the bread lady who visits the gites most mornings. Also eating lunch under the welcome shade of the fig tree (from which our gite gets its name) was rather lovely.

The pool area is fantastic with a box of floats/balls etc to play with and plenty of sunbeds and parasols. The grounds are lovely, with lots of space to run around. Large areas have been left for wildflowers to grow and the gite is surrounded by vines and sunflowers. It is a very peaceful, quiet location with the only sound being the birds - it is truly beautiful.

We all enjoyed playing table tennis, badminton, football and petanque and particularly enjoyed our time exploring the local area on the bikes available to hire from Phil and Glyn. There are so many cycle paths along the river, alongside vines, maize and sunflower fields and through quiet villages. The roads here are so quiet and safe to cycle on.

We spent several days at the gite and exploring the local countryside on the bikes but there is also plenty to do if you wish to venture out. We enjoyed kayaking on the Charente in Cognac, a visit to pretty Pons with a climb to the top of Le Donjon, a trip to the fantastic zoo at La Palmyre, the stunning beaches of le Cote Sauvage, go-Karting, a couple of days exploring Cognac, including a tour of the Hennesey Maison. The beautiful village of Aubeterre sur Dronne with its impressive underground monolithic church is well worth a visit too.

Phil and Glyn are excellent hosts; friendly and always there to help if you need anything. Glyn also brought us some of her lovely home grown tomatoes, which were delicious.

This has been our best family holiday ever. Thank you Phil and Glyn, we hope to see you again soon!

Excellent accommodation in a truly beautiful rural location 

Would highly recommend a stay at Gites De Brives!  We are an Irish family of four - kids aged 12 & 10 and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay in La Grange gite.  The gites are exactly as pictured and described on the website and are of high quality - well kept, clean and pretty with all the facilities that you expect to be available in them.  Fresh bread arrived in a van in the mornings most days so no driving to the shop for fresh bread! There is great privacy with the hedges around the gites but equally open to allow families to mingle if they choose. The pool was maintained to a very high standard and the size and depth suits all ages.  The grounds were maintained perfectly and there were plenty for the kids to do. In the evening time the kids loved the table tennis, badminton and boules ... as did us parents.  The region in the surrounding area is perfect to amble along at your leisure on bikes and is very safe for all ages.  Its a very picturesque region and lovely to drive around on four wheels as well.  The gites are very accessible by car to the beaches in Royan and others along the coast, so beach and pool for anyone who wanted that - 50 mins drive only.  So its very possible to have a varied holiday in the region. And lastly, the hosts Phil & Glynn were especially lovely - friendly, available if needed but non intrusive at same time.  A welcome pack greets you in case you arrive late in evening and any queries or requests were never a problem.  I cannot emphasis enough how pleasant our stay was after a busy 10 days at a campsite prior to that. Highly recommend it. Veronica M.

Lovely location, gite and owners!

We have just returned home from a week's stay at  Gites de Brives. We had the larger property for the 3 of us and enjoyed the space, British TV and best of all the lovely, clean, well kept pool. We also enjoyed the peace and quiet, lovely countryside, vineyards and bird song. 

We also enjoyed some spectacular sunsets and Oliver, our 10 year old son, enjoyed making friends and playing football and boules in the long summer evenings. 

Phil and Glyn are very friendly hosts and were very agreeable at answering our questions about the surrounding area. During our week's stay we visited Royan and the Cotes Sauvage ( the latter well worth a visit), Cognac for lunch by the river and a tour of Remy Martin, plus a visit to one of the smaller distilleries near Jonzac. La Rochelle was a real jewel in the crown as well as the medieval village of Pons. We also visited the Antilles indoor and outdoor water complex ( very like Centre Parcs). There is so much to do in this area that we couldn't possibly do it in just one visit. 

We also enjoyed several bbqs back at our gite and just sitting outside after a day touring.

Authentic Stay in Charante country!

We had a brilliant and relaxing time here. The kids loved having the pool a few feet away, and the expanse of land to run about on. Their favourite bit of the holiday was playing hide and seek with the neighbouring gite's children at dusk with torches! The star gazing was first rate and you can even see the Milky Way.

Charente is a beautiful region not far from the Atlantic coast. Cognac was good, but we particularly enjoyed our visit to Saintes; such a quaint town with great shops.

The facilities were very good and the gites was well kitted out; I particularly appreciated the washing machine! However I would say they could do with updating and better beds.

Phil and Glyn were welcoming, friendly and helpful. We would thoroughly recommend a family holiday here.
