Stayed with Noreen again recently and as always the house and gardens are all immaculate. Rooms are spacious and beds very comfortable. Location is very quiet and we were treated to the sound of a cuckoo next morning!! Sincere thanks and we look forward to staying again soon

First Class

The grounds of this B&B are absolutely gorgeous!  Our room was more than comfy and Noreen was the ultimate hostess!  Breakfast was very good, enough selections with fruit, cereal as well.  
It is a jewel in a rural setting and with parking in Donegal easy, it wasn't an issue driving in.  Central to so many attractions.  Highly recommend.

The Arches is located just a few minutes outside of Donegal town, overlooking beautiful Lough Eske.  The setting is magnificient - high up on the hillside, overlooking the lake, the sounds and smells of nature everywhere.  The house and guest rooms are perfect - spacious, immaculate, and finely furnished, with top quality bed and bath linens, and beds so comfortable, you may not want to get out of them in the morning.   Every detail attended to, down to complimentary tea, coffee, and water in your room.

Noreen's breakfast room is idyllic, in a brightly lit sun room off the side of the house.  The breakfast menu is excellent.  Fresh fruit, breads, cereals, and your choice of hot breakfast.  (You'd be hard pressed to find better scrambled eggs and chives!)

Most importantly, the welcome.  First, some background.  

I discovered The Arches quite accidentally many many (many) years ago.  I did the math last week, and it's been 30 years.  Back at that time, I was traveling around Ireland for the first time, and using a set of open vouchers for bed and breakfast and farmhouse accommodations.  The vouchers were accompanied by a little book of participating locations.  When I think about planning for that first trip and comparing it to how I plan for a trip to Ireland now, it's a little shocking to consider how laid back I was about it back then!  I would roll into a town when it felt about the right time to stop exploring for the day, find a pay phone, throw in some coins and start calling places in the book!  “Do you have any rooms for the night?”  Wow!  We had no internet.  I don't think we had phones. We had pay phones and a book, and some paper vouchers! 

Well, that's how I discovered Noreen and the Arches, quite providentially.  I have visited Ireland no fewer than 20 times over these 30 years.  And I've stayed with Noreen at least 14 or 15 of them.  She is a dear friend now.  Pulling up that driveway on every visit truly feels like coming home.  The warmest welcome greets me every time.  In fact, I am getting emotional thinking about it as I write this.  It was complete fate that led me to closing my eyes and putting my finger on a listing in that directory 30 years ago.  I'm so grateful.  

The practicalities:  Donegal town is a perfect launching pad to start exploration of the county that I think is the most magnificent in all of Ireland:  rugged, raw, a bit off the trail, breathtaking coastlines, cliffs and mountains to climb, and Glenveagh National Park right in the middle, offering all kinds of walks for every fitness level.

Stay 3 nights if you can.  The first night, you are just settling in.  The second night, you've explored an entire day, and have figured out what you want to do the next day.  That third night, you'll thank yourself for staying 3 nights, as it enabled you to really maximize your time in Donegal and at The Arches.  Set off the next day feeling like you've really immersed yourself a little, instead of running from place to place.  (I learned this from experience.)

I guarantee you, you'll be back.  


Slice of Heaven in the Northwest of Ireland

Noreen is an excellent hostess. The rooms are lovely (take time to sit by your window and enjoy the views of the lake!) Her French toast is worth the trip. It is a bit of a drive to town, but the hospitality and quality of the rooms is well worth it!

Lake Views!

We had a 2 night stay with Noreen at The Arches Country House in Donegal. We were in the middle of an 18 day trip through Ireland when we got to The Arches. It was an excellent experience! Beautiful home, fabulous breakfast and most importantly super hospitality! We highly recommend The Arches Country House.

What a comfortable and wonderful location B&B! Noreen has a lovely home on the beautiful Lough Eske. 10 minutes or less to Donegal Town. Bedroom was large and very comfortable, most comfortable of our entire trip. If you can, give yourself enough time to walk around the beautiful lough. Would love to stay here again.

Beautifully Located on Lough Eske

If your looking for a place to stay which is quiet & comfortable this is the spot. 
Beautiful location, the guest house looks out over the lake and has stunning scenery. The gardens are really well looked after. 
The rooms are spotless. Nice shower, again spotless with good pressure & the water doesn't leak out onto the bathroom floor.. huge bonus! Little vanity area with hairdryer & mirror with light for getting ready. 
The breakfast is really good. Highly recommend the scrambled eggs, nicest I've ever had. 
The owner Noreen is very welcoming.
Overall lovely stay, close to the beaches & Donegal town.

Peaceful Location

We really enjoyed staying here .  Location is beautiful.  We enjoyed being in the country with great views of the lake .  Nice place to walk or run .  Rooms were spacious .  About 15 minutes from Donegal.  Family who runs it was very nice .  One of our favorite places to stay on our trip to Ireland .

Wonderful place to stay

Just returned from a wonderful one night stay in this B&B. It more like a boutique hotel. Rooms spotless and ever so comfortable with fabulous view over Lough Eske and Blue Stack mountains. The gardens are amazing.
Noreen the host so welcoming and friendly. 
Breakfast varied and delicious.
Loved our stay and hope to return in the near future.

Just few minutes out of Donegal in the countryside, it is located on a hill overlooking a lake.
What a view and what a garden.
Impeccably clean and very comfortable, you can have a great rest while visiting an area with plenty of things to see.
The host is very nice and charming lady; she prepared a great breakfast for us and gave us some suggestions in what to explore in the area and where to dine.
