This guesthouse is traditional, beautiful and very clean. The owners are very warm and helpful. The woman speaks perfect English and is incredibly helpful. The location is great, walkable from Nijo station with big backpacks in summer heat. Highly recommend.

Wonderful Tradirional Guesthouse

The guest house is located at 10-15 min walk from 2 train stations (Nijo or Emmachi). There are many buses. Not far from tourist attractions. Good value for a night on a tatami & the owner si helpful.

Night in a traditionnal house

I love to stay in Makuya, it was our 1st experience to stay in a traditional house and it was fantastic. Everything are clean and very comfortable. The owner is really helpful as well explaining every time we had a question. During the night the surrounding may be a lil' bit too silent but you can find some good restaurants and some convenient stores nearby. The location also not too far from Nijo station (about 2-3 stops) just make sure you get your bus day pass.

Experience The Traditional House in Kyoto

Pros: 
- Beautiful. Good atmosphere. Nicely renovated traditional house.
- Clean. 
- Quiet, peaceful residential neighborhood.
- Free bicycles (Only five or six available, can book in advance, we did but the owner somehow didn't reply our emails. Not sure if you can adjust the seat heights; we did not because they might need tools / spanner).
- Very close to nearby Centou (銭湯) : 笠の湯.

Cons:
- Location. It isn't the most convenient place you can find, but might be okay for shopping if you're used to biking. Note there are quite a lot of slopes in Kyoto, especially true for the famous temples.

Clean, Comfortable, Affordable Traditional House in Kyoto

The place was easy to find. It's at most 15 minutes from nijo subway, a little further from Nijo train station, or a couple of minutes from bus stop- take 206 from station. 

We bought all day bus pass -500¥ - either from subway station or bus rations- can buy on bus sometimes. Useful to get around as one ride is 220¥.

Stayed in room next to kitchen, probably worst room there as noisy. Japanese girls next door getting up and talking loudly at 5am did not help us sleep that morning! Plus some guests use the hairdryer very early in washing  area (right outside our room) and that is very noisyIt depends who else is staying but all noise carries.

Very comfortable sleeping on futon and liked the bead filled pillow. Shower and toilet generally clean with different slippers to wear in different rooms. Shower didn't drain too well as clogged with hair one day. Never had to wait to use facilities.

Kitchen useful and free tea & coffee.

Owner very friendly and she spoke good English. Would probably have enjoyed it more in a different room.
