I have lived 10 minutes from this hotel for the past four years, but other than some visits to the public bath and inside the lobby, and up to the viewing deck, this is the first time I have actually stayed here.  My wife and I stayed in a Japanese style room and my parents and young sister stayed in a Western/Japanese style room (wayoshitsu).  First, let me say that my parents, on their first trip ever outside of the US, were very pleased with the buffet breakfast.  The food was all very fresh and even some of the items that you wouldn't find in America, such as the salad bar or the grilled scallops, were happily eaten.  And the public bath was my opportunity to introduce the wonderful world of Japanese onsens to my father for the first time (tip - it's very easy to smuggle beer down into the outdoor bath!) As for the facility itself, there is no doubt that it is aging, and seems ridiculously large considering the location.  It was built during an era of bubble-induced craziness and no one seemed to consider what might actually be sustainable.  However, the location itself, from a scenic point of view, is wonderful.  The only problem is that there are zero restaurants or shops or anything open after 6pm unless you drive the 15 minutes into Saroma.  Overall, I think this hotel offers a nice location for those touring Hokkaido by car or bike and on a moderate budget - our room with breakfast was 12,000 yen for two people.  For single travelers or those looking for nightlife, look elsewhere.  But if you want a comfortable and friendly hotel with good service and a scenic location in the north of Hokkaido, this one fits the bill.

First time stay, pleasantly surprised.

Route Inn Grantia Saromako is not a bad hotel - it's got a fantastic lake front location. But Lake Saromako itself is not really interesting nor as pretty as its other cousins Lake Kussharo, Lake Masyu or Lake Akan. We stayed one night on a Monday night and the hotel felt like a ghost town, even though we subsequently found out it in fact had about 20 other guests. Firstly there was no bell boy or door man at the door to greet/ help us with our numerous luggage. In fact the whole hotel appeared to be staffed by only 4 people the night we stayed : 2 ladies at the reception counter (who did not do much to help us with luggage despite having seen us), a cleaner, and one waiter at the lonely dining room. Our rate included dinner and breakfast. Dinner was a set Japanese course, the bulk of which was cold dishes including sashimi, etc placed ready on a tray on the dining tables at the start of dinner time. Not a very appetising start, especially when there were only 5 tables set (of which only 2 were taken up that night, including our party !). However a few other hot dishes were subsequenlty presented, much to our relief. Portions were delicate, food quality was good. We had a twin room that was supposed to be 43 square meters, a good size especially as we were travelling with 2 young children. The room itself was nicely decorated, but the hotel was starting to show its age here and there. On hindsight I think we would have enjoyed ourselves more if we had stayed overnight at another place, perhaps Sounkyo Onsen, instead of the Saromako. The combination of bad service, poor ambience, and mediocre sights at Route Inn Saromako just didn't cut it for us.
