I had a pleasant stay at A-Yado Gion. The location is incredible, 5 minutes from Shijo-dori and very close to the Kamo river, Shirakawa stream and plenty of shops and restaurants. You’ll see geisha hurrying up and down outside the building in the evenings. There is free breakfast (one slice of bread each but it’s a chunky one!) and tea and coffee. There is also a free laundry service, although they do charge if you want to use the dryer. The WiFi was decent, although only the 3rd and 5th floods had it, which makes being in the 4th floor dorm a bit annoying, but no major problems. The staff are friendly and sweet with great English, and the 5th floor common area is very cute.

On the downside, the 4th floor dorm was pretty cramped and a little dingy, with stained privacy curtains and only one toilet for 10 beds. There are 2 showers though which were good. The worst part is the beds themselves - hard and uncomfortable with horrendous pillows (like cotton wool balls in a bag). I didn’t get a decent nights sleep the whole week I was there.

On the whole, very much recommended - just buy new pillows haha! Thanks guys.

Cute hostel

Good hostel for backpackering, comfort bed and restroom. At every bed has electricity so you dont need to worry to charging your phone. Very kind and helpful receptionist and you also get a breakfast.

A yado gion
Lovely hostel in centre of Gion. Fantastic value. Breakfast ( toast and coffee ) , wifi are included in the piece. Staff are super helpful and friendly. there is a great sitting room/common area upstairs  which is great to to chill

Cheap and cheerful

People said a lot of good things about this place and they are all true.  

I just want to tell a story about a fellow traveler.  She arrived really early from a different city on the night bus.  We saw her in the common room on 5th floor (the hostel rooms are on 3rd floor and thank God there is an elevator) with her hair wet from a recent shower.  The staff was nice enough to let her use the shower and put her things in the common room and hang out here before she checked in.  

This is almost unheard of!  I went back to my hostel in Tokyo 3 times before the check in time and they turned me away 3 times!  We also saw some bags in the common room that are chained to some furniture and locked.  Came to find out they belonged to guests who left but would be returning.  This hostel is unbelievably nice to their guests!  How can you not stay here?

Within the hostel, things are nice, clean and organized. On the stairs and in the hallways outside in the building is a different story.  Although I am not sure if the hostel has control over those areas.

Best common room and most flexible and helpful staff!

知恩院(chionn inn)is the nearest bus stop.
go along river by ゆうさいはし（yhusai bridge）and turn left, soon you can find や台ずし（yatai sushi）. The third story is reception.
you must be gonna be disappointed breakfast. as just a piece of toast.
receptionist is friendly, but some of them are poor to explain where it is.
there was no curtain so it's too bright to sleep.
there is 100yen lawson near by.
