The owners made this a wonderful stay with their kindness, attention to detail and wonderful breakfast. The Ryokan is very well modernised but retains loads of charm including low beams so be careful. Food was fabulous and the room was comfortable with a sunken bath, separate bathroom, study, and tatami room. The best part omis the private breakfast/sitting room looking out on a Zen Japanese garden with its ancient turtle looking in. Amazing!

Perfect in every way

Kyo no Yado Ishihara is a wonderful family business right in the heart of old Kyoto and pretty much smack-dab in-between the Imperial Palace and Nishiki Market. Hiroko-san always knew when we arrived and would greet us with a smile and an offer of tea while we relaxed and reflected on the day's journeys. She and I spent many a time-between-trips chatting about whatever happened to jump into the conversation stream; speaking with her was like speaking with an old friend. One of my fondest memories was when we were chatting downstairs for a bit longer than we had intended and out of the blue she paused and asked, "Would you like some tea?" I said yes and within seconds she was back with a tea set; we spent the next ten minutes sitting on a tatami floor near the genkan, sipping warm tea in the cool evening breeze, and chatting like it was just any day of the week. Breakfasts were delicious, the accomodations were vintage but comfortable, and access to the rest of the city is an easy few minutes' walk away. I give my heartfelt thanks to Hiroko-san and Motoharu-san for their wonderful hospitality, and highly recommend Kyo no Yado Ishihara to anyone who is looking for a home away from home while traveling in Kyoto.

Stellar hospitality, wonderful food, and traditional charm culiminate for an unforgettable Kyoto experience

Esteemed Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa stayed here and so can you. Tucked amidst the mystery of Kyoto lies Ishihara Ryokan where authentic Japan awaits you. There is nothing quite like being greeted by the open and friendly smiling faces of owners Mr and Mrs Ishihara upon arrival. I felt almost like a character in a traditional Japanese story, as I strolled by a mossy and lush Japanese miniature zen garden and suddenly found myself climbing a small yet steep stairwell to my minimalist room of paper, wood and bamboo. Ishihara is the epitome of the Japanese philosophy of wabi sabi. Accepting imperfection and embracing elements that are weathered, worn or rusted. Wabi harmony, peace, tranquility and balance. Sabi the bloom of time. 

Wabi Sabi Ryokan

Stayed here with our two kids and we all very much enjoyed the experience. Wonderful warm hospitality and a fabulous Japanese breakfast. The futons were surprisingly comfortable. It is very well located and a comfortable stroll to the Nishiki Markets and Pontocho Alley. 

Highly Recommended

We stayed one night at Ishihara in February 2017 and it was a really special experience. Hiroko made us feel so welcome. The ryokan is in a fantastic location with lots of lovely shops and restaurants to explore in the neighbourhood, but it is also a wonderful place to stay to cosy up and have a break from travelling. I very much enjoyed a long soak in the bath! The highlight was the beautiful homemade Japanese breakfast the following morning, with a large range of different food to try. The salmon was absolutely delicious as was everything else. It was a truly calming, serene and nutritious way to start the day and Hiroko popped in for a chat at the end and helped us with some recommendations and provided a map. This was a lovely, authentic Japanese ryokan and you will leave with fond memories!

Beautiful hospitality and wonderful Japanese breakfast!

I stayed three nights with my two teenagers. We were so well looked after. The Japanese breakfast was amazing - the dishes just kept coming and coming! I'm not sure I'd rush back for the pillows, but otherwise it was a lovely break from bland hotels. The kids enjoyed meeting the turtle. Hiroko very kindly did some laundry for us and presented us with tea upon our return back to the room each afternoon.
