One of the best Ryokans to stay in Shirakawago village in my opinion. Just a walking distance from the bus station, the ryokan offers really a comfortable stay for my husband and I. We loved all the dinner and breakfast spread and our room had a great view! Service is also excellent! Highly recommended to book in advance as it is very popular especially during the light-up season

Comfortable Ryokan with clean rooms, onsen and great food!

Hotel is located 3 minutes walk away from World Heritage site of Shirakawago village.  Onsen (Hot spring) open to public as well and very nice Onsen with great view.  Even though hotel looks old from outside, it is very clean and rooms are quite large as I got lucky as hotel give me 6 person family room even though our family is only 4 pax.

Dinner is also very good and including Hida beef and very large servings.

Great location, good food and nice rooms

I love this Shirakawago village and enjoyed the experience of staying one night at the Ryokan. I booked months ahead because I came during Japan cherry blossom season. We stayed in Japanese style room with shared bathroom. The hotel team prepared the futon for us while we had dinner. 
The room package came with breakfast and dinner. Dinner with Hida beef was excellent. It was one of the best dinner I had in Japan. Breakfast is also delicious with rice and grilled fish. 
The Ryokan also has onsen and it was a nice experience admiring the view inside the hot bath.  
The ryokan is within walking distance from the bus stop. We came using Nohi Bus from Kanazawa and going back using Nohi Bus to Takayama. Nohi Bus need to be reserved and you can reserve one month ahead.

Lovely Experience

Solo trip during Mid January 2018, is totally white whole area!!! Big snow during Visit! 

Travel from Takayama with Nohi Bus by Hokuriku Takayama Area Pass which included the bus fees! But please take note Nohi bus is need advance book by phone only before travel, simple to call the Nohi bus customer service line to book the seat for roundtrip, just need make sure provide your full name same as the Area Pass.



Must Visit during winter month 

My family and I stayed here for one night, in a large tatami room for 4. The ryokan is stylishly designed, and quite beautiful. Although the price is a little expensive it comes with an excellent dinner that included Hida beef, as well as an excellent breakfast that makes it worthwhile. Including the use of the Hot Spring, we felt it was a wonderful experience. Plus the next day, it snowed, and we could see the snowfall straight from our room. 

Lovely Ryokan, a little expensive but worth it...

Lucky to be there in both winter and summer. Shirakawago is such a popular place and it is advisable to plan and book your trip in advance.
Our family stay in Takayama but travel to Shirakawago in a rented car and the journey starts with an unforgettable drive. 
Do not expect fancy dine-in experience but you will have the chance to taste authentic Japanese servings. 
The village looks stunning when it was covered with thick snow in winter whereas the blossom summer will leave another astonishing experience in your mind.
If I have to choose one, my choice will be the snowy winter.

went in autumn.. but i think i may want to go in winter instead and stay 1 night to experience the place instead.. overall quaint little place.. but too many day visitors that it felt like a themed village..

peaceful village

It is a natural hot spring. As we stayed at the Japanese Ryokan, Ohtaya, we were given a coupon to use at the onsen, whereby we would get a discount of 100 yen. We enjoy ourselves immersing in the comfort of the hot spring and relax. We tried both the indoor and outdoor onsen. We soaked slowly and comfortably, moving from indoor to outdoor . Truly a great way to heal the mind and body.  After our onsen session, we went to the outdoor section to enjoy the scenery of the Shokawa river.

Healing of mind and body

With its own in-house hot springs, dining, and sleep-on-the-floor experiences, and a beautiful village to wander around in, we truly enjoyed our one night stay here. Village was packed with tourists during the day, but by late afternoon it becomes a ghost town :) Great experience!

Traditional authentic Japanese Inn

Note that this is not a traditional gassho-zukuri house, but a purpose-built hotel building.

1. Location: Very near the bus terminal and good place to start the visit to Shirakawago. Oversees a picturesque river.

2. Rooms: I stayed in a Western-style room. It was smallish, but that is typical of Japan. It was comfortable. No en-suite toilets though.

3. Staff: Polite and functional. They had some difficulty communicating in English, but can manage.

4. Amenities: The set dinner (kaiseki) is not cheap, but it was tasty. Breakfast was also good. They have a hot bath area which was great because I visited in winter. Do note that there is only 1 toilet for each gender and 2 wash basins for all the 10+ rooms on the 2nd floor. This is a tad inconvenient, and might be a point to consider before deciding to book this facility.
