The lodge is located in the middle of Tsavo East, which makes it easy to spot animals. Choices of food are great. The pool and its relax area provides you with views to elephants. I liked the small details like refillable shampoo and shower gel bottles, which shows the lodge’s commitment to the environment. All in all an excellent experience.

Great place to start your safari

I wanted to set the record straight after reading the dreadful recent 1 star review. My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in mid-January in one of the tents. We found the staff very helpful and friendly, from our wonderful driver, Tony, who went out of his way to make the most of our game drives, to the restaurant staff (esp Felix) and cleaners. Our tent was clean and comfortable and we had visits from lizards, kingfisher, hornbills and more from our outside sitting area. The pool was a welcome addition and was mostly quiet and a welcome respite from the sun. The only reason not to give 5 stars was the catering. Breakfast was great, with lovely fruit and all the usual items, but the lunch and dinner buffets got a bit repetitive - there was lots of choice but all along the same lines. Sometimes less is more! All in all however we really enjoyed our stay.

A great safari experience

Unfortunately we were disappointed with this hotel. 
Very basic food options, half the options were Indian and we didn’t see any Indian guests during our stay. We were told these were classified as vegetarian. We don’t class this as vegetarian as we don’t eat Indian food so it left very little other options to eat (rice, potatoes, one veg option and two meats). All the buffet food was in pots on electric hobs set at low temperatures which was worrying, we found this across Kenya that food wasn’t kept hot. Poor food safety and hygiene standards. Staff and chef spoke to us about the food and how to accommodate us but additional training is required to improve it. 
Rooms are dated, not been refurbished in 15+yrs, now showing their age. We were first given room #113 but asked to move due to the small double bed and public path across our room window for other guests to go look at the water holes. We then moved to room #220.
Both rooms in same old condition. There are approximately 52 rooms in total. 
No Wi-Fi in any of the rooms, they have outdoor lights along the perimeter near the rooms. They could easily connect wireless repeaters at these point and give all rooms Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi only worked in the bar area, not even their reception. Very cheap standards to not provide Wi-Fi everywhere. 
We didn’t use their laundry service but not surprised to see they provide plastic bags for your laundry (as the other Ashnil Samburu we stayed at was also the same), whereas all the other lodges we stayed at provided baskets. 
If visiting Tsavo East we would not stay here again. Food and room not up to “moderate” standards as our travel agent advised and as the other reviews stated.

Shabby rooms, poor/average quality food

We have the been extremely disappointed by the absolutely lack of customer service from this company and also misleading us about compensation due to us. 

My family visited in December and chose this lodge to stay in during our safari trip. Whilst one of our rooms was fine, the second room had an inordinate amount of bugs, including many within the bedsheets and pillows. We have been on safaris before and understand the nature of staying in the reserve means there will be bugs around however having them crawling all over and within the bed in one room was quite appalling (as the safari driver and organiser also agreed). After running through options with them we opted  to cut our trip short and were willing to pay for the rooms and nights we used, but were told we could have some compensation for the night we did not use the room. To achieve this we were told we would be contacted by Ashnil Aruba Savo and furthermore could reach out to them via email and Whatsapp. We trusted them to follow through with this promise however  we have been met with total radio silence during our numerous attempts to contact them and are extremely dissatisfied with the lack of transparency as we trusted that we could leave the site and still get the agreed resolution. Therefore, not only would we strongly advise against staying here due to the poor conditions we experienced in one of the rooms, but inability to contact them would place anyone who does face a difficulty/ lack of satisfaction with no means to contact them and unable resolve this.

Bug hotel. Grim food. Unfriendly staff. Absolute shambles. Strongly recommend against if you can. Beware the package deals. Just a dirty, noisy, unfriendly, spiteful hotel such a shame. We left after one night. I would urge caution. Better options.
