This hotel is nothing upscale but is very clean, excellent  location, good AC and heat when necessary, semi bilingual staff, and functional room amenities. Also, next door is a classic Nogales long bar & around the corner an all purpose restaurant.

Good Value

I give San Carlos 5 stars because it is the best hotel close to the border.  It may not have the lively bar that Fray Marcos has, but you're also not held hostage to the elevator setup at Fray Marcos.  It's easy in and out from your room to the street.  Also, the rooms are more updated (e.g. the shower was nice size and super clean) and it's about 50-75% cheaper than Fray Marcos.  There is a little cafe/restaurant attached to the hotel.  I did not eat there but it looked decent enough.  The bar on your right as you walk out onto the street from San Carlos is pretty cool.  It's a good mix of locals and some tourist, but mostly locals.  Finally, San Carlos has fast and free Wi-Fi.

5 stars but not in a conventional way

We used to stay at Olivia's.
Now we have a much better stay. Safe clean and friendly.
Never again Olivia's except for the restaurant.
Olivia still has the best food in town.. Too bad the hotel just gets worser and worser!!!

simple and private.  comfortable bed.  clean.  excellent for the price.  nice window view from the 3rd floor.  cable tv in room and wifi available.  restuarant just off of the lobby.
only con was shower door would not close.

Others have said it.  Bottled water provided.  Ask at front desk.  No frills. Hot water.
Staff speaks a bit of English.  Loved the food and friendliness at Café Leo nearby.
There's no elevator.  They take credit cards.  You can change money into pesos across the street.  Safe covered parking if you have a car.

A real bargain at this clean, comfortable Nogales, Sonora hotel.

Location is right next to the border. The border is visible from my room (see photo). Parked the car for the night in USA at ED's lot; it's next to the Shell station right by the crossing. Easy stroll from lot to border crossing, to San Carlos. This place is cheap and clean. Almost adjacent to the Regis Bar, a popular hangout.
