Excellent location and wonderful rooftop terrace view. Be ready to climb the stairs. it is quite an exercise:) Rich Moroccan breakfast. Coffee or tea, juice, local bread and pastry, jam , butter, honey and yoghurt, sometimes boiled or fried eggs. Friendly and helpful staff.

We loved this place!  We had an entire apartment to ourselves, and the rooftop views are awesome.  Amine was very helpful, he met us at the bus station and walked us to the riad, which would have been quite hard to find otherwise.  Well located within the Medina, quiet and clean.  Great place for the money!  Would come back.
Be aware that many places in Morocco don’t take credit cards due to the high fees, so be prepared to pay cash.

Beautiful Riad, great service

My boyfriend and I stayed for 3 nights at Riad de la Mer in Essaouria, located just perfect in the hotspot of the Medina, close to the shops and just a few minutes walk to the beach. Our room on the 4th floor with our private roof terrace was very cozy, light-flooded and lovely to sleep in! As there is a mosque tower nearby and the praying pretty loud, we woke up every morning at 5 o'clock.

Diane, who is managing the booking and also our pick up from Marrakech did answer and help very quickly - we were just wondering about the explanation why there would be spots and marks on the bedclothes and towels: She said in advance that it's because of the poor marrocan water quality but curiously we haven't found spots or anything comparable in the other Riads we stayed at in Essaouira and Marrakech .. The other thing we were disappointed about was the missing information about the low-ceilinged bathroom (height: 1,65m), in which my boyfriend had to sit for showering. 

The breakfast was delicious, fresh orange juice, pastry, pancakes, bread, best of marrocan coffee and jam - traditional marrocan breakfast served on the roof terrace.
There was no wifi connection on the 4th floor but a good one in the entrance hall.

Altogether I'd definitely recommend this Riad in Essaouira. Our room was beautiful but its not in a good position for elder and tall people (because of the bathroom), better choose a room on the lower located rooms.

Lovely Riad!

For:  great house, lots of character, fab location, the excellent Abdul and family, beautiful light-filled room (on top floor), all very well looked after, good shared facilities, quiet (apart from the call to prayer! which we actually grew to like), good views
Against: top floor bathroom for emergency use only - it's just too low of ceiling. Lots of stairs! Roof top terrace has great view but without any wind breaks can be too windy to sit up there. 
Sum up: We were warned about the bathroom so no sour grapes, but next time we will check out the other rooms. There will be a next time: Essaouira is just a great place and this riad is a wonderful and authentic way to experience it, a great antidote to bland corporate hotel horribleness.

An authentic Essaouira riad in excellent location

The Riad was lovely (it's the former home of a Jewish merchant) but unfortunately our room was on the fourth floor up several flights of narrow stairs.  The manager was very helpful in assisting with our luggage, but it was still quite a climb for those not used to stairs. The bathroom was quite small and the ceiling of the shower room was about 5 1/2 feet tall, so it's pretty challenging for someone tall.  However, the view of the sea was beautiful, and we very much enjoyed breakfast on the balcony the next morning. The Riad is very conveniently located next to the main store and there were plenty of restaurants to choose from.

Authentic Moroccan experience

My heart sank as I entered the room. There were no signs of any care, the overall impression was one of wear. The double bed (2 singles pushed together) had worn springs in the mattress, which was damp - no comfort. The sky light slid back for entry onto a private roof terrace, which was difficult and cumbersome to open as it kept coming off of badly fitting runners. There were large holes around the frame, wouldn't take much effort or cost to fill. There were two dirty plastic white chairs on the roof terrace, one of which I later found was broken,when I went to sit on it and fell back. The toilet and shower was a few deep steps down from the room, the door was tiny and led into a space which required being bent to move in, the door frame being lower than the low ceiling resulted in whacking my head a few times before adjusting myself to the space. After a couple of middle of the night loo visits I created an alternative, for safety reasons. I asked for toilet paper replacement once, after which I didn't bother and provided my own. There appeared to be no real service other than breakfast time. Had we paid a much, much lower price then I could understand the lack of care but at the price being charged at this Riad I would suggest looking elsewhere, there are places close by which are run well, quite beautiful and much cheaper - enjoy!
