I stayed in Barca de Oro towards the end of my trip in Central America. It was just perfect for me. It was so peaceful, lots of room to relax, be by the beach, eat good food and the staff made me feel like I was at home. it also has an impressive yoga studio.

Feels just like Home

I stayed at Barca de Oro for 2 weeks and it was amazaing! It was pretty calm because of the beggining of the tourist season, but I really like it! Perfect place for setting down for couple of days, the surf shop is close, there is cheap yoga directly at the hostel, kayak in mangroves available, turtle nursery and for sure not that touristy beach really close! The restaurant at the hostel is one of the cheapest around and really good! Owner and staff were also super friendly et smiling, highly recommanded!

Relaxing at beach and enjoying life

I feel so lucky to have found this place! This very pretty hostal is located on a lovely spot. It is the perfect starting point for exploring the surroundings and to come back 'home' happy and full of new impressions. I was delighted by the delicious meals and the beautiful view. And the very, very best are the staff! I really felt like home and very welcome. A place to come back to!

I've been traveling to Nicaragua for the past 6 years and have eaten and stayed at Hostal Barca de Oro several times.  The owner and the staff are outstanding and they do their best to please you.  If you want a clean, inexpensive, good food and environment - then this is the place.

Great place to stay in Nica!

We spent a few days over New Year at Barca de Oro in Las Penitas; a short trip from the city of Leon in Nicaragua. We stumbled upon the hotel by chance but thought we were so lucky! It is a wonderful property right on the beach with a great restaurant over the sand. A few options are available as far as sleeping rooms that can fit all budgets. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The restaurant offers great food, very varied. The hotel offers wonderful excursions if you want to explore the area: bicycles, kayaks etc... We spent the best few days of our trip there!! 
The situation in Nicaragua is very settled now with no sign whatsoever of any social unrest or problems. The people are wonderfully friendly and always happy to help! 
We love the country!

New Year Eve in Las Penitas!!!

Stumbled on this place and what a find!  Great location right on the inlet and close to the beach.  The staff is very friendly and helpful, excellent food at reasonable prices.  Overall, it's a bit rustic, but that is its charm.  The restaurant and our room and bathroom were clean.  Our room was comfortable, no AC, but the fans kept us cool enough to sleep well after a day on the beach and in the waves.  I met the owner, Sandrine, she was very accommodating and helped us organize some sight seeing.  Loved it!

Great place to stay in Las Penitas

Poneloya is an isolated spot near the City of Leon that was semi deserted before the troubles that have afflicted Nicaragua since last Spring. If you want luxury and gourmet food,  go elsewhere. But if you want a long, semi isolated
 beach with lots of shells and great waves think of Poneloya. Within the safety guidelines issued by the U.S. Embassy last year, I have felt reasonably safe in Nicaragua, including Poneloya for the last 3 weeks. 
Hostel Barca de Oro has clean, very basic rooms, some with views of the Pacific, that are free of amenities but the staff is friendly and the food is fresh and tasty. There are health spa services that I did not partake of. My room with 2 beds and ocean view was $26 per night.
It's not an all inclusive Cancun style resort but rather part of an adventure that I'll gladly return to.

An Uncut Gem

We loved it here.  At first we were disappointed at the position of the hostel as it was back from the beach, but we grew to love it! We had eco bungalows and they were good value for money, it was great to have a toilet (basic) and a cold shower (basic). 
The gardens are spacious and attractive and you could sit there people watching all day!  The hostel was the place for locals to eat which was a good advertisement but we had trouble getting a table!  The food was excellent and good value.  Wishes we could have stayed longer.
