great location in the heart of Casco Viejo. I you stay here get yourself on Chris's tour of the area. He is a greatt dude who is full of knowledge of the local history and it is the best way to spend a few hours in the city. He is happy to help out with any issues or questions you have. Got me sorted with a SIM for my entire trip so I could easily keep in touch with family.

Great hostel with Great staff

Chris Barnes, thanks for everything. Never had such a good city tour guide! You were so passionate with the city tour but also included the nature hike outside of Panama City! Thanks for everything.........

Best city tour ever

Very nice hostel to stay in. Especially room 7 is perfect! Lots of backpackers and people to explore the city with. Chris gives a walking tour almost everyday of the week and I would definitely recommend to do this! It was a great walk, with loads of wild animal spotting, good food stops and a view over the city and the Panama Canal. Would definitely recommend this hostel to everyone!

Super nice hostwl

Wow what a brilliant hostel to visit and stay in when you are in panama city I cannot think of a better hostel in the world! The common areas are very clean and they have a lot of things to do such as ping pong or reading or playing games or chatting to other travellers and it was very homely! They also have a huge bar that you can reach from the back stairs it was very cool! The drinks are so cheap and good! There are beautiful trees and little sit off areas where you can meet other travellers from many other hostels. It is a very popular outdoor bar but there is no issue with noise within the hostel rooms! Stay here it is top!!

Top hostel!!!!!!

I can only recommend the walking tour with Chris !!! You get a fantastic view of Panama City and the Panama Canal. See if you're lucky sloths, hummingbirds and monkeys. Chris leads you through the streets and gives tips. The four hour tour was really fun!!

Walking Tour with Chris

To begin with, the hostel is a really cosy place to chill and hang out in panama city, especially in casco viecho. It is located centrally and offers nice chill out areas and clean rooms and baths. You get all information there needed for panama city and how you can manage your time to checkout the best activities. 

In personal, one of the best experiences we had by attending the walking tour with chris - it's free but if you enjoy the nearly 4 hour walk to Ancon Hill (which offers an awesome view over panama city and the panama canal!!) you should give Chris a tip for his time and efforts. During the tour chris spots lots of tucans, sloths and other jungle animals! You never catch them because chris is a jungle expert and spots them even if you can't really see them (ask him you will find out). Furthermore, you gain a really good insight into the "real panama". To sum up, it was a perfect start into our vacation in panama and we would recommend everyone who stays at lunas and has time for a 4 hour walk to take part at the free walking tour (...even if you will have not much time, the walking tour sums up the most special things you can see in panama city).

Also one thing I would like to highlight is that Chris makes this awesome place to one of the best we have visited while traveling through hostels. We hang out a lot with him, he is an incredible person and very supportive (thanks for SIM card and gym!). All best Nicolas & Nico

Great place to stay!!

The atmosphere of the hostel is pretty solid. Good suggestions from receptionists for stuff to do and places to eat. They have a few themed lists of suggested Panama City exploration areas. Trips to San Blas can be organized here, I met Dicky, one of the owners who told me about the islands and the travel packages. I have a few weeks left here in Panama and now plan to go to San Blas at the end.
One of the best opportunities at this hostel was a guided tour with Chris, an expat local who lives and works at the hostel. He takes guests on free guided tours every day (tips suggested at the end) up to the top of a rainforest hill nearby, and points out toucans, sloths, monkeys, falcons, and other animals along the way. At the end he takes the group to his favorite ceviche shop in the fish market. The whole tour was a few hours long, and it's an experience that I wouldn't otherwise been able to have. Hopefully he'll be around when you arrive!

Relaxing and organized Hostel on the Edge of Casco Viejo

I really can recommend the free walking tour, which takes place almost every day at 10 o’clock and takes about 3.5 hours. Chris, our guide, has led us to the hill "Ancon Hill", from where you have the best view of the Panama Canal and the city itself.

Absolute insider tip, because Chris not only knows the best ascent, he has discovered with his trained eye of sloths to monkeys everything that we would have definitely overlooked. Then we visited a restaurant at the fish market with very good ceviche.

It was like seeing the city with a local! He gave us a lot of information about the history of the city. 

For the stay in Panama City I can really recommend Lunas Castle!

Walking tour

Luna’s is everything the previous reviews implied and more! I arrived in Panama with a rough idea of how I wanted to spend my time in the city and they helped me flesh out plans and avoid the tourist traps. 

I’d highly recommend the midday walking tour with Chris. The timing is great for your first day if you check in early, but the next morning is worth it too. We left at 10 and were back in the early afternoon.

He takes you from the hostel, through Casco Viejo and up Central Ave, pointing out street art and landmarks. From there, the tour goes up to the top of Ancón hill. Throughout Chris is running through running through the history of the country, canal and people. 

The weather was perfect and just two hours after checking in at Luna’s, we had the best view of the city and the drinks from the night before were worked off! 

10/10 Experience overall. 

Great Experience From Start to Finish! 

Luna's Castle is exactly what a hostel should be: a home base where travelers can feel welcome. The beds are comfortable, clean and inexpensive, and the common areas are available as a place to rest between experiences.

Like every good hostel, this place is chock full of interesting people. Adventurers from all over the world stay here, and share stories over breakfast, or while having a beer during the nightly happy hour. 

Even the host, Chris, has a fascinating life story. During my whole stay, I never saw him without a smile (or with a shirt!). He goes out of his way to learn every guest's name and make them feel special and welcome.
In fact, the whole staff is pleasant, helpful, and professional.

Obviously, the other big draw here is the location. Casco Viejo is a beautiful and intriguing old neighborhood on the rebound. It is easy to spend a whole afternoon just roaming around. And, with a Metro stop just blocks away, it's not difficult to get to other parts of the city as well.

The only downside to any hostel is the fact that people will be coming and going from your room during the night. Some people are quieter and more considerateness than others. Also, Luna's is over a club; some nights there is loud music until late. If you enjoy nightlife, this is no problem. Otherwise, you may be losing sleep.

In all, however, I very much recommended this place, and will stay here again if I return to Panama.
