This guesthouse on the side of a cliff overlooking the Douro Valley is wonderful. You can sit on your balcony or by the pool and get  lost in the beauty. The rooms are modern and comfortable. The breakfast is excellent. The hosts Marie and Philip are extremely helpful and friendly. Marie answered all of our questions ahead of our stay by email. Philip greeted us warmly and led us to a very nice restaurant for lunch on our arrival. He brought bread and olive oil to us as we sat by the pool and made reservations for our dinner when we couldn't get a call through. The place is a bit hard to find since there is no sign and only an opening in a wall which you have to turn into. Highly recommended!

"Spectacular View" says it all!

My wife and I stayed at Imaginario d'El-Rei to use as a base to explore the Douro. We are so pleased we did. 

The guest house was everything you could want. Very friendly and hospitable hosts - they were keen to help and guide in every way. They shared their home produced wine, and were always supplying complementary snacks to go with the wine. Clean, modern rooms, each with a balcony and a great view of the River Douro. Swimming pool and terrace was perfect for soaking up the sun and watching the river. 

Very pleased we stayed in Mesao Frio opposed to Regua. Regua is more built up and less charming.  I'm sure you will have a great stay here.

Perfect Base to Explore the Douro

We spent 3 nights and unfortunately our air conditioning didn’t work for our entire stay. It was really hot and unpleasant and despite us bringing it to their attention numerous times it was not resolved. The owners are lovely people and the view from the rooms and pool are magical. I agree with other reviewers that some partitioning between rooms would give a bit more privacy and a bit of maintenance is needed around the pool area. There are no meals other than breakfast and no fridge in the room so prepare for warm drinks or a drive to town. A bar fridge in the room would make a big difference. I hope they can sort out the small things as this could be a 5 star stay in the Douro valley!

So much potential 

The location of the b&b is wonderfull. Really a pool and room with a view. It's nice to have your own little terrace. Unfortunately there is no privacy. Some sort of separation would be nice. The rooms are standard yet comfortable and cosy.
Breakfast is rather limitied, without much regional products. We had better in other places in portugal. The breakfast room is cramped, but they are building a new and more spacious one.
As they don't provide drinks in the b&b, a little fridge in the room would be handy so you can keep your own drinks cool. They will provide a poolbar in the future.
They also rent a house with 3 bedrooms next to the b&b (not mentioned on the website). Since they also make use of the swimmingpool, it can get crowded there. There are not enough sunbeds at that time. It could be a more peaceful place.
The hosts are very friendly and hospitable who can give you good advice on things to do and places for dinner.

some improvements will make it better

We got to the hotel at lunch time and had to look around to find help, because there was no actual reception and all the staff was having lunch. After settling in, we went to find the staff to make a request for breakfast. One of the staff was listening when the owner, an older gentleman, interrupted us in a very rude way, asking what we wanted and saying we should come back later instead of interrupting their lunch. We gave up and went to check out the pool. It was not cleaned, the water was full of bugs and not transparent at all. So we decided to leave the hotel, without even asking for the money back. Before leaving, the owner asked to talk to us, in a very rude manner. We warned them about the pool, and once again the owner was very rude saying that we didn’t know anything about pools. Later that day his wife called us to apologise for his behaviour and offering to refund us for our stay. That refund never came!!

Extremely rude owner

Bad hotel. Room extremely hot, we could not sleep. Bedding very old.
There was no bar service, no drink service, not even sandwiches. Nothing whatsoever. Staff not helpful.

Breakfast ridiculously terrible. Not even fresh orange juice.
The hotel is far from everything so if you don't bring food with you you'll be in trouble.
Swimming pool dirty.
Room with a view? Not really.
