As advertised a Grand old hotel in the center of town. We took a half-pension option allowed even for a one night stay. Parking in front of hotel and decent free wi-fi throughout. Room 105 in the off season is a huge suite with two toilets, Jacuzzi bath, two balconies,  two TV's...you get the picture. No a/c evident to me. A fine place to stay in the old style. The cog railway up the mountain is right behind the hotel. Good value and recommended.

Good value

We stayed there for four days at the beginning of May. Hotel is for reasonable price at great location. The woman at reception was friendly. Food was not so good. You can choose from 7 variants but it was hard. I would expect some local food, but it was not a case. Swimming pool is good and sauna was great. We went off to other hotel nearby for evening as there was literally nothing in this hotel.

Fair value

I stayed there with my colleagues for two nights during the May which isn´t the main season time. I didn´t expect much from the hotel, bur rooms were really nice with balcony and beautiful view. The prices were also appropriate. The service is the other case, I was disappointed. When I tried to asked something on hotel reception after 9pm  nobody could answer and help because there was only a door-keeper and everything was closed - restaurant, cafe, pool, So the only thing I could do was to stay in my room or go elsewhere.Wifi was free but the signal was good only at reception. Food was ok, nothing special, but the waitresses didn´t have the basic manners. I got food first and my older colleagues had to wait another 5 minutes (we ordered the same dish)and then my lunch was cold.

Nice rooms, good prices, but service was a disappointment

We spent our New Year's week in this hotel for the first time (... and probably the last). The location is one of the best, everything is at hand: train station  (if you want to get between the ski resort and have a hot wine ... as the alcohol limit is 0% in SK), by car all the main ski resorts are close, as well as aqua parks. 
This was quite all the good part ... now the rest:
- you just can not find a person in the staff that really speaks English ... (or more than 2 words), maybe some German .. but the words are still basic ... you can get a beer and maybe a simple dish
- during a week stay the cleaning was done only based on request ... i wonder if we just didn't say anything ... 
- there is no hair dryer in the room, so if you get later from the slopes or from wondering in the city ... you can't get any from the reception either, as they are all taken ... i cough a cold after the second time :(
- we had a HB stay, with a quite limited breakfast (but if you get in early you can have ham, cheese, milk .. eggs .. it's quite a good average breakfast), but if you get later than 9:30 .. refills are hard to get .. and the English topic steps in again .. a glass of milk is an adventure :). Dinner was just a CAP to it all: there was a 3 choice menu each day ... (it's been a while since I could not get any decent Dinner in Europe in a 3 or 4 stars hotel) ... we ended up with ordering all 3 each night (as we were two couples) just to eat something. An experience not worth to remember.
All in all i would recommend the hotel for the location, with options for eating close (e.g. Koliba restaurant is just 200 m away) or having breakfast on the slopes or on the way.

not even an excellent location can change the service you get ...

We visited the bistro restaurant of the Hotel for a quick lunch and were horrified about the service. 
It's the kind of service you'd have encountered during the Communist times but it has no place in a competitive environment where people are used to more for their money. Considering the tone of voice and the absolute lack of politeness you'd believe we were paid to eat there and not the other way round. Those ladies didn't even crack a half-smile and sounded very rude. 
Avoid the Hotel Smokovec at any cost. There are other places in Smokovec where you can eat and feel like a human.
