We spent 11 days and nights at Las Canteras, birdwatching. Nearly everything was perfect. The large room and modern bathroom the extremely comfortable beds, Ten days of perfect weather. We'd be awakened by hoopoes and other rare birds (great-spotted, cuckoo, blue-winged magpie, thekla lark...) and watch a pair of storks and their nest in the garden when eating, or a huge roost of Spanish sparrows. The plains with bustards and sandgrouse are just a few minutes away from the Casa. - Dona Pilar is a loveable lady and an excellent cook: every day different delicious evening dishes; no problem for people who need gluten-free food. Her son Francisco is an endless source of information about local sights...and birds and very helpful! He has a good telescope inside the restaurant. And Chulo, the dog, is very friendly. Just one piece of advice... if you can, avoid the week before Easter. Prices are much higher and Monfrague park is full of people. The Casa is closed in January and June. 

Paradise on Earth

Had a great week at Las Canteras. Great birding in the garden - bill-clacking storks, bee-eaters, hoopoes, a pair of little owl and even a stone curlew. Great hosting from Francisco, who can give information about local birding spots. Lovely, simple home cooking from Pilar in the evening, particularly the vegetable first courses. Great rural location from which to explore Extremadura

Great accommodation for birding in Extremadura

Countryside location, great for birds and other wildlife. A simple and homely base, with good home cooking using local ingredients. Francisco the proprietor was keen to show off little owls, a tree frog in the conservatory plants and share his knowledge of the local area. Highly recommended.

A great place for birdwatchers

Clean and comfortable rooms, slept like a log. After long days out birding it was wonderful to come back to a quick shower before a cold beer tasty home cooked meal! Great chats with the owners about the local bird life. Woke to the sound of Hoopoe calling and the amazing song of the Spotless Starling.No need to travel too far to find Great and Little Bustard, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Roller, Azure winged Magpie, various Larks, many birds of prey. We didn't want to leave!

Fantastic base for a birding trip

Every year as amateur birders we go to a different place in Spain, this year it was Extremadura and may I say the area is just GREAT. This Casa is ideal, not far from Trujillo, but out in the country with nothing else nearby for miles, apart from 20+ pairs of nesting Storks. The rooms are pleasant and everything worked well. If you have evening meal it is basic local cooking and very nice too. The owner is very knowledgeable and he was able to point us to the best birding sites. Our stay was very enjoyable and I recommend this Casa highly.

So Quiet

What a great place to bird watch in Spain !! We saw Bee eaters,little owls, rollers and so many raptors. This is a great place to launch out for birding. The rooms are spacious and the sunrise and sunsets are spectacular. If you choose to eat dinner at night the food is simple and good.

Great place for Birders

This casa rural is run by a very friendly couple and our Naturetrek group took up most of the rooms. It appears to be ideally located for avid birdwatchers in a very peaceful part of Extramadura. Breakfast was simple with carton juice, slow-slow-toast, cold hard boiled eggs, cheap jam portions and dodgy coffee. Supper was no-choice home cooking. Some of the home cooking was really tasty, such as a sort of ratatouille soup, but the meat courses were overcooked and nothing special. The included wine was OK. The rrom was basic with no table or chair.

Friendly simple accommodation

Stayed a week at Casa Rural with a group of birding friends and enjoyed it. The place is very basic, but is clean. Its position in the country side make it good place to travel from.
The town of Trujillio is well worth a visit .
