Zum Roten Lowen is right in the centre of the pleasant village of Hildisrieden which is about half way between Basel and Luzern. The location is good as it is close to the motorway and access coming both off and on is easy and well signposted. Our room was spacious with a small balcony. Everything was comfortable and very clean. The staff were pleasant and friendly though it will help if you have a little German as they don't speak English. We had a very good breakfast and an excellent dinner though the latter was not cheap - but nothing is cheap in Switzerland we found. The only downside was quite a bit of traffic noise from about 6 a.m but thus wouldn't stop us returning or recommending the hotel to others

Comfortable small Hotel in pleasant village

The hotel is more an "auberge" excepted for the price which is in line with swiss standards. It's in an ancient house but well maintained. The receptionist was more than friendly and warmly welcome us. The hotel overall is clean (we're in Switzerland...). The rooms are spacious and clean, same for the bathroom, even if it's clear that it's more an "auberge" than an hotel. No minibar in my room, minimal and aged furniture. Twin beds not that bad. The only point the hotel cannot change are the church bells that wake up the all village at 6am. No way you can avoid the 5min+ concert. Breakfast minimalist but there was enough choice. You cannot find better in the region. All in all, and if I'll be again in the region, I'll most probably stay there.

Bit expensive for an "auberge"

We spent one night here on the way to Luzern.  Staff are friendly and  competent and the hotel is pleasant but nothing special (est: 2 *). The room was comfortable and clean but spartanly furnished with foam mattresses and a single bed covered by a coverlet serving, uncomfortably, as a sofa.  It lacked a telephone, mini-bar (in previous hotels on this trip), electrical outlet in the bathroom, quality towels and bathroom hooks.  If it's warm and the windows open, expect to hear traffic all night.  Breakfast was adequate but in no way exceptional.  The integrity issue was of greater concern.  At check-in, we were shown the room and quoted the price but when we paid, we were told the room tax was extra.  Further, there was no mention of the enthusiasm of the bells in the church tower next door, which chimed every quarter hour until 11 pm (mercifully not overnight) and then greeted the new day for at least 2 minutes at 6 am!  Usually, this type of "distraction" is mentioned by a hotelier or, at the very least, ear plugs are provided (e.g., Bellagio, Dresden).  Given the high priced  dinner menu, we inquired about the cost to prepare a small plate of vegetables (steamed with nothing on them).  The owner said it would be a few Francs.  Imagine our surprise to be charged 19.50 Francs for what amounted to 1/2 a cooked carrot, 1/4 cup of beans and zucchini, and a few slices of potato!  Asked about the exorbitant price, the owner said there must have been a misunderstanding!  We had a similar issue with dessert but I'll spare you the details.  What prompted me to mention this at all was the review by Mary081 who said:  "They don't speak English".  The owner, his wife and the head waitress all speak excellent English and are summoned by others immediately if there is a possibility of misunderstanding.  Given the rather remote location, high price (even for Switzerland), and questionable integrity, I would not recommend this Gasthaus to other travellers.
