I stayed one night here at Kirin Villa and have mixed emotions about it. On the plus side, it is very affordable, the room was huge and comfortable, with great Wi-Fi, strong AC, and a nice hot water shower. So in that sense nothing to complain about. BUT...  I had no idea how far from the center of Puli it is located -- a good 4 kilometers -- and there is NOTHING nearby the hotel in the neighboring village when it comes to food options, not even a 7-11.  So it can feel quite isolated. When I arrived at 1:00 pm by taxi from the bus station (having arrived from Taichung HSR station), there was literally no one there to check people in. No one! It was like a ghost town. Very surreal! Nor was there any signage in English and I wasn't even sure the driver dropped me off at the right place. Eventually a young Chinese couple showed up on scooter also wanting to check in, but they didn't speak English either so we tried to communicate somewhat hilariously through translation apps. Finally a woman who seemed to work there agreed to check us in early, but credit cards are NOT accepted, so thankfully I had enough NT$ to pay for the night. In a stroke of luck, the young owner of the property, agreed to rent me his scooter (he runs a scooter repair shop in the center of Puli), so I had transportation to go in and out of town and do some exploring and grab a bite to eat. The next morning, there was a Chinese breakfast buffet included in the room price, but no Western options, so that was also a stretching experience for me. The only nearby attraction, which I walked to before I got the scooter is the very impressive Lingyan Monastery, at the top of the hill above the nearby village. Bottom line, this is a decent hotel option, but it's very isolated, and there is little English spoken. But still, somehow, it all worked out and was fine.
