Sad day for Fort William Restauranteur.

Out for lunch with my family on Monday and went to The Moorings hotel Bistro which we have been to often over the years. As soon as we entered we were aware of a man shouting way down at the bottom of the restaurant behind the counter. Obviously not thinking it could be us we carried on locating a table there is a couple of particular tables that are ideal as my wife Fiona is a full time wheelchair user and has a lovely fully trained registered service dog (Barnum).  Unbelievably it turned out the man shouting was actually shouting at my wife Fiona. 

The man we later discovered his name was Matías shouted across from the kitchen bar you cannot come in NO DOG IS ALLOWED you need to go elsewhere in the hotel! 

We are local and regularly visited the bistro  and have supported it for many years and never had any problems with Barnum before.
As everyone knows Guide and Assistance dogs have the right to go anywhere as they are highly trained and classed as medical equipment.  My wife tried to show him Barnum’s official documentation issued by the charity he was trained at (Canine Partners).The document also shows the Disability discrimination act and that it’s not lawful to refuse an official assistance dog and its owner. he just dismissed it and insisted that she must leave and go into another part of the hotel. Although the rest of the party were welcome to dine in the bistro .
He eventually came closer to us and my wife tried to show him  barnum’s credentials again but he refused point blank to even look at them he eventually did read the documentation but he just dismissed it and insisted that she must leave ! As you can imagine my wife was extremely distressed by this time and in floods of tears. I also  was trying to explain that he is allowed in restaurants,he accompanies her in hospital ,doctors in fact everywhere she goes as he is classed as medical equipment.He just kept shouting over her in fact we were all trying to explain but he just kept asking her to leave.

I asked to speak to the manager of the hotel but he blacked out that request, He told us he was in charged of the hotel and that’s was the rules my wife was to go to another part of the hotel as it was the MOORING HOTEL RULES .

I’m sure some of you will have seen my wife Fiona and Barnum out and about together she has now had him nearly 9 years and in all that time this is by far the worse discrimination she has had to endure.

We did however end up having a lovely lunch at the Highland soap factory. They have a very similar set up in a way withe kitchen leading off from the counter and baked goods out on display. We were made very welcome and they actually allow any dog in to the restaurant not just assistance dogs.

Disabled people

Will not be stopping again. Booked a three night stay for business and needed to cancel the last night advised on the Monday and on checkout on the Thursday morning still charged  for the last night. Downright dishonest won’t be staying again.

Dishonest not for business travellers

Just returned after our 3 night stay for new year. Wish I had got all the staff names as they really tried with the small amount of people that were there to make it a great night. 
The food was lovely each night especially new years eve . 
The new owners since we last went 4 years ago are really trying to get things back on track,after COVID and reopening late in the year there was no live entertainment as all were booked up,but the disco was good and the Scottish people there made us (Yorkshire people) very welcome.
   Our room 22 was a superior room newly carpeted ,great walk in shower constant hot water . Massive bed and toasty warm temperature in the room. The 3 managers definitely are working hard in welcoming guests and being friendly I do hope next new year gets the custom it deserves. It's in a lovely quiet location ,no traffic noise and nice walks out of the door. Ben Nevis cable car was our way of blowing away the cobwebs on new years day ,loved it . Great new years Eve 

We booked in for 8 people for a Christmas Part Night, outwith the Hotel's control noone else booked in so it was cancelled but we still went for a Christmas dinner and had an overnight stay.

The check in/welcome we got was the best we have had, thank you so much. I was welcomed by name and shown our room, then offered an upgrade! Nothing was too much trouble and the rooms were absolutely lovely. After a long drive and all the stress associated with arranging a family get  together this was a welcome treat.

We loved staying here and would definitely come back, the location is lovely and we had a nice walk along the canal.

The only (slight) negative was that it was really obvious we were the only ones in and the kitchen was struggling, which was a shame. We had our table booked for 7pm and at 8.10pm the very nice waiter was asking us to please get all our orders in for pudding as the kitchen were waiting to close, some of use weren't finished our main courses. We did feel a bit rushed and the food, which vast in quantity, was  a little bit lacking - the veg were over cooked, spouts burned and the sticky toffee puddings were served cold. We did get a an email beforehand asking us to pre-order and this perhaps explains why but I wish the hotel had said the kitchen would be looking to shut at 8pm!! We ordered  3 Baileys after dinner and the bar struggled to give us 3 as they were running out. We got 3 teenyweeny measures... 
Everyone had a lovely time though.



Nice Christmas Visit

My usual abode in Fort William is the Premier Inn, but it was unavailable so my work booked me in to The Moorings.
I’d never stayed here before so didn’t know what to expect. Let me save you all a bit of time; it was fabulous. It was warm. It was extremely friendly. And the food? It was to die for.
Let me just say that the staff were exceptional. Very attentive. Very genuine. Very, very friendly.
My room was ideal; a great big comfy bed. A brilliant heater. Piping hot water. A lovely big TV. Plenty of sockets with USB. And for those that are particular, my room was made-up every single day for me coming back from work.
But for me the hotel excelled with their menu. I stayed for 4 nights and had something different each night. Each meal seemed to surpass the last. And the portions are extremely generous - absolutely no scrimping - and the prices are very, very reasonable for what you’re getting.
My only regret is that I didn’t stay here during one of my earlier visits up here. And part of that is because of what’s right on their doorstep - the magnificent Neptunes Staircase. I got to see it infrequently in the daylight because of the dark mornings/evenings - I can only imagine the view at breakfast and dinner when it’s the summertime. It must be glorious.
I can definitely recommend this fabulous hotel. And if it means anything at all, my new go to hotel when I’m back working in the area won’t be the Premier Inn, it’ll be The Moorings. I’d urge others to do the same.

Warm, Friendly, Charming. A true delight.

2 couples stayed for 1 night on a road trip around Scotland. It is well situated and the food was really  good pub food. Staff were welcoming and friendly. The rooms we had served the purpose but the whole hotel is in need of decorating and even a refurb.

Very Disappointing.  We travel up to the Isle of Skye regularly to visit family and use Fort William as a stop over.  First time staying at The Moorings and will be the last!  Very outdated. Very old fashioned.  We were given a disabled room and both of us are fit and healthy.  Very over priced - £139 just for the room, breakfast not included.  Having said that, we are pleased we did not have breakfast included!  We book a table in the restaurant based on the Menu which was on- line.  We rushed back from the Town Centre of Fort William to keep our 7.00 p.m. reservation in the restaurant at The Moorings only to be told it was a 'reduced' menu due to a large party eating there that night.  The menu choice was terrible.  We ummed and arred about staying there, but because a taxi was £10 each way to the centre, we decided to stay there.  The food was edible as best.  The staff were not very accommodating.  Infact they were quite unfriendly.  Stick to Travelodge or Premier Inn next time - much better value for money and much better location

Very Disappointing!

We went with a big group of car enthusiasts. Fabulous location, great staff, good food, great value, a really good base to see the highlands. You can watch the ships on the canal, and hear the steam train! The staff can’t do enough, the food is great, the curry fab!!

We stayed one night here. Our room had a separate sitting area with a comfortable sofa, and a great view of a lock on the Caledonian canal and Ben Nevis in the distance. Breakfast was very good, and the staff helpful. We would go back, so highly recommended. 

 Traditional hotel in a great location 

Staff were very friendly and accommodating, headed by the amazing Ravi. Location was idyllic. Food was lovely. We enjoyed it so much that we hope to go back again next year. If you can order another serving of sunshine, Ravi, that would be perfect.
