Just back from a wonderful two days at the George and Dragon in Clifton.  If you are looking for a relaxing break on the eastern edge of the Lake District then look no further!   Handy for trips to Lowther Castle and for walks around Ullswater.  We couldn’t fault G&D’s bedrooms, bathrooms, bar or dining room.  Food was delicious (special mention for the cheese soufflé and the chocolate brownie with ice cream) and the service outstanding.  Star performers were Daisy, who knows how to make a really mean flat white, and Mike, a perfect host behind the bar.  If I had but one small grouse it would be that the mark up on the wines was on the high side, but then again everything is more expensive nowadays.  We really enjoyed our stay.

Perfect two day break on eastern edge of Lake District.

This is an excellent pub all round. It's on a main road so it doesn't have that village feel like the other two in the Lowther range (Queen's Head and Askham Hall) but there are some great walks nearby along the river and over the hill to Pooley Bridge. We had room 5 which is of a good size and has a large bathroom. If you are a light sleeper you may prefer a room at the back away from the main road. The food (dinner and breakfast) was excellent, far superior to usual pub fare and service was with a smile. We were caught out by late check-in of 4pm (we should have phoned in advance). The dinner bed and breakfast deal of £240 for two was brilliant. We will certainly be back.

Very good value in the North-East

Firstly I have been twice a year regular for perhaps 10 years so I know the place - this was my first visit after the fire and refurb. 
Check in and room great.
We ate there in the evening and we were impressed by the food it was excellent. There were basically 2 set price menu options which with auto tip amounted to £50 for 2 courses or I think around £58 for 3. 
We ate in the bar due to having our dog with us, as did the other couple apart from that after 8 it was pretty much empty.
However we were quite astounded that there were no other dining options. I frankly cannot understand what on earth they are thinking about - If a family have 2 teenage kids then you are looking at a bill for >£200 the management need to read the room on that. I live in Staffordshire and visit a more upmarket gastro pub called the Duncombe Arms and they have a similar set up but the menu caters for families and people who don’t want to spend big bucks (it’s certainly not a cheap joint). I also followed a village pub called the George at Alstonfield who took a similar approach, probably more aggressive with regard to locals and it failed. 
The G&D has a beer garden and a traditional bar - feeling peckish get out the platinum Amex. 
I want this place to succeed and I’m OK to pay on our visit £180 for food and drinks but I am totally aware that I am in a fortunate position. 
Maybe it’s a trial / maybe it was the week I was there - I do hope so.

Strange dining strategy

We opted for the dinner, bed and breakfast option. We received a warm welcome and our ‘Lowther’ room was charming and vey comfortable. Dinner was delightful, the amuse bouche were exquisite and we enjoyed all our choices from the menu. Cheese soufflé highly recommended.

Cosy fine dining pub

Warm welcome - huge bath which was very welcome to a well chilled traveller - very comfortable room and excellent food for both supper and breakfast.  This solo lady traveller felt very well looked after!

Comfort and Great Food

You'd have to try very hard to find fault with a visit to the George & Dragon, and I couldn't! From the cosy well stocked bar, good local beer to the very comfortable and well appointed rooms. Excellent bed, firm but comfortable, pillows, that you sink into and pleasant decor. The restaurant equally excellent with a delightful menu, refreshingly different dishes and all freshly prepared and presented. Breakfasts cooked freshly to order equally excellent. Would love to have stayed longer, and would return anytime.

First Class on Every Level

Thank you. A delightful location, a super room, a delicious dinner and a grand breakfast. What more could one want? And we had a drink with 'mine host'. Well done. We found Larch Cottage Garden Centre well worth a visit.

Stayed here for one night during a business trip. The room was very nice and spotlessly clean but it did not have a desk which I normally like to do my work, but sliding that to one side, the food is something else. Because I have a "very limited" amount on my works credit card I decided to go for the battered fish and let me tell you, I have never had "fish and chips" like it, the meal was superb and looking around at the other guests food (as you have to do) it all looked wonderful,  so much so that I will be bringing my wife here all the way from Nottingham one day. Well worth a visit/stay/meal.

Superb

Stayed here after a long rainy winter’s day in the lakes. Everything was great; the cosy fire in reception; the super friendly staff: lovely rooms; and the great evening meal using local produce. Breakfast was super too. Good value and would definitely recommend

Warm welcome & great food

Spent a night at this wonderful country inn. Found it by accident and cannot recommend it enough. Pity I wasn’t free to spend longer. A characterful country inn, tastefully renovated whilst maintaining many original features and ambience. The staff were extremely friendly and helpfully. The dinner was very tasty. I hope to stay again sometime.
