Booked at the last minute as we needed a dog friendly break due to our motorhome letting us down. This place has a lovely warm welcome. The hospitality was great and if you're not a dog lover this place isn't for you. They're welcome in every room which worked out brilliantly for us. Our suite, the Causey Pike, was large. The bathroom is modern but the rest of the decor is dated, but it was clean and the views are spectacular (see the photo from the room) with the mountains Barrow (front) and Causey Pike (rear) both in sight. Breakfast was lovely and the pizza £9 and garlic bread £4 was really good value. The bar prices are realistic £21 for a bottle of malbec and £2.75 for q large Pepsi. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Good choice of well presented pub food with some nice extra touches. I particularly liked the venison burger from the special’s board.
We were a three generation family group and everyone enjoyed their meals. The child’s jacket potato was gigantic!
It was a lovely sunny evening so we sat outside for a drink before moving inside to order and eat - we did book.

Family friendly pub

I've been coming here off and on for years and it's always been amazing. After a lovely walk me and my friend ended up here for a pint. We had planned on having a meal thier as it was my birthday.

After waiting no less than 20 minutes at the bar hoping to be served a couple of beers I popped my head into the kitchen to inform the staff how long I'd been waiting and asked if someone could serve us. After waiting a further five minutes no one came so I walked into the dining area and asked a member of staff if she could please get someone to serve us.

She came out practically in tears as if I had said something terrible.  But she wasn't actually crying like the blonde woman said she was. Saying she didn't appreciate my presence in the kitchen even though I'd only popped my head in. I ordered pints and tried to calm her down by saying I realised it wasn't her fault and that this kind of thing was down to bad management.

Me and my friend had already made our minds up that we were going elsewhere for food. Can't really eat somwhere where there's no service. We took our pints outside only to be accosted by the blonde woman who had her voice raised telling me off for being rude to her colleague. All I did was ask for service. They have ruined a once lovely old English pub.

One of the other patrons informed us of the real problem. The actual manager is never thier and delegates everything to his staff. It's a sorry state of affairs really.

I have since found out that I've been accused of bullying the young lady who fininally after half an our of waiting finally served us.  If asking to be served after waiting all that time is bullying I'm guilty as charged.  People need to be really carful who the slander and make accusations against!

Used to be an amazing place with friendly staff.

Been coming here every visit to the lakes pre lockdown and been to some of the music events and always very good.
We walked to borrowdale and as it’s was my friends birthday and this is his favourite put we got a taxi to the pub around 3 to 4 pm we went into the bar and there was a few couples having drinks (clearly not walkers and were residents) lady  at the bar in front of us had been there a while and was staying 2 nights and had booked at short notice. IMO always a bad sign We waited and waited and waited 15 mins in we were like were is everyone no staff at all waited some more after 20 to 25 mins some blond woman presumably the manager but was later told just a staff member by another pub owner local to the area who was drinking outside, practically runs past the bar doesn't acknowledge any one. After about half an hour and no sign of any staff my friend starts walking around looking for a staff member and finds one hiding in what we were later told was the kitchen but nonsighs labelled as such iirc screen and says you can’t come in here he’s like I’m not going to I’m just looking for a staff member I’m not coming in. Seems to me like someone was hiding in the kitchen ;) 
We get the drinks and my mate comments that wouldn’t happen in Newcastle laughing saying this was his favourite pub and it’s his birthday etc. no comment from him he the staff member. Not great but hey ho we move. We go outside and start talking to the other pub owner that I mentioned earlier he said the owner doesn’t care and doesn’t work at the pub anymore and not renewing his lease. At this point this blond woman comes out shouting saying you can’t go in the kitchen and you have been rude to my staff err I don’t think so (I was foolish to think that she had come to apologise) there is a staff shortage err we known but we’re are the staff you had? Hiding ? were were you ? If you know you were short staffed you should be popping your head in seeing if people want served (all of the drinks were at the end on all the tables) in note that the same blond lady is referenced in all of the negative reviews on here clearly can’t deal with people and shouldn’t be in the job! Won’t be going back ever, needs a good manager or my mate jon taffer from bar rescue!

Great 3 days

This 17th Century Inn is placed perfectly for enjoying a nice weekend away in the heart of the Lake District. It is so well placed that you will not need the car if you're wishing to climb Cat Bells. There are also a plethora of other popular sites within just a 20 minute drive. The views from the rooms are great. The pub is lovely to relax in and the drinks nice enough to spend all day in if the weather is bad with a nice warm open fire. The rooms are adequate. They are clean and the bed comfy albeit a little on the small side (but this is to be expected in a 17th Century Inn. The staff are friendly, the breakfasts are good and the food / menu is also good.

Perfect Location

Good beer, great food with really friendly and helpful staff. The perfect place to stay for a few days walking in The Lakes. The quintessential pub is exactly how it should be and has very dog friendly accommodation. Very well priced too for the time of year. Will definitely be back. Thank you

The Swinside Inn is the perfect place to stay, especially if you have a four legged friend.

We enjoyed our stay the room was well presented with decor and facilities Tv, kettle, tea, coffee etc. Nice shower with shampoo, conditioner, soap etc. Double bed was very comfy and clean.  The views from the room were awesome over the Newlands valley. Breakfast was lovely. Staff were very friendly. We recommend this lovely quirky old-fashioned Inn and would stay here again.

A fantastic place to stay. Staff are friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable of the area. The building is amazing, and food .. well the food is worth a visit even if you’re not staying a night or two! Absolutely amazing food! We love everything about the Swinside Inn.

This is now our second time staying at the Swinside Inn and we’ll be back again for sure! 

Oh and did we mention the views?! The views are breathtaking!

An amazing stay (again)!

We have never stayed in this part of the Lakes more fool us. The Inn is set in beautiful countryside with views straight onto the hills. Many walks straight out the door unfortunately we were travelling on the next day. Please follow the Inns advice about directions, we arrived early and they could not be more accommodating.
Everyone was friendly and helpful, great views from the room, very comfortable bed and so quiet. Everything you needed for your stay was available. We had an evening meal, the pork belly was gorgeous very flavoursome and filling. Part of the entertainment was watching the football fans supporting England, keep believing. The breakfast was great and filling. Would we return simply yes, we enjoyed our stay and would love to explore the area more.
