Booked this and then read the reviews. Dreading what we would find on arrival. Beautiful old building that's seen better days it has a musty smell to it on entering. Have to phone the proprietor to gain access to the hotel. Can be a bit of a wait but you can grab a cuppa in Cafe19 next door which also does amazing breakfasts  Pru the landlady of the Marlborough is getting on in years and doesn't appear very mobile, she's a pleasant enough person although slightly confused. She has been left by her business partner to run the place by herself. She also has other properties to look after. If your expecting a normal hotel service this isn't the place for you and the rooms are slightly overpriced for what you get. We have found it adequate for a two night stay as we don't mind basic hotels but would book elsewhere in the future. There is no reception, no daily maid service and no breakfast.  Our booking was for a double room but got twin beds pushed together which was ok with us. We stayed in room 5, there was a dining table, fridge and microwave which were clean and in good working order. We brought our own towels although we were provided with bath sheets, no soap and a toilet roll which was almost finished. This was ok as we had packed some. I can imagine it would be difficult to get any from the hotel reception and you would have do as we did or go out and buy the items required. The bedsheets were clean, the rooms are dusty and dated as are the tea and coffee making facilities. Its obviously a huge task running this hotel for Pru as she is getting older and she should probably consider retirement. Which is a shame as it looks as though it has been a nice hotel in the past. In all it wasn't as horrendous as we were expecting but wouldn't recommend it to friends or family.

An honest review

Checked in and immediately checked out.This hotel made Fawlty Towers appear 5 star.
The door was locked when we arrived and the phone number didn't work. We were outside for about half an hour.
Eventually the door was opened and we were led to a holding room to await the lady .When she finally arrived there was no apology but  a number of excuses were made.It was explained there'd been  a storm, this had caused damp and the rooms still needed dusting as they been busy. Also told it had to be cash payments as no phones, and the ensuite was broken but there was a shower down the corridor. 
We asked to see the room - it was filthy : dirty large fridge,microwave  minging carpet, cold shower, no tea making facilities, no towels nor  breakfast. 
We headed out for cashmachine  and then  decided we'd rather sleep in the car.
The woman was the rudest woman I've ever met- pushing us out of the front door to slam it behind us.
They are refusing to waive the cancellation fee.

Fawlty Towers - don't do it

Just come back yesterday! Well where will I start. This is a NO NO hotel.
Arrived, Pru seemed welcoming, BUT, showed her true colours.
Got there, paid for room on fist floor, it was really well situated, with a lovely full Seaview, room was spacious, beds were comfy, BUT the pillow was stuffed under sheet, no pillow cases, pillows were dirty. Linen were clean. Tea and coffee tray fairly empty, milk tubs were out of date. No bath mat, shower door hanging off.
When I asked for extra tea and coffee, she said we were only untitled to 1 tea and coffee, milk???????. Pillow case never came till near departure, room not services, she made up that couldn't get into room, because key lock wasn't working???????
Also she was chatting to a man who had booked in to do odd jobs around the hotel, even he was a guest????????
BREAKFAST..... This was a real problem to Pru, she didn't want us to use or have toast, tea, cornflakes ect- really, even though my friend rang and asked if there was breakfast. Stale bread, a shortage of breakfast items, when asked her she was very reluctant to provide it.
Tables never cleaned, even the dishes we used the day before was put out for us to use again without washing??????
The morning we were leaving, I had a word with Pru, but just got a verbal abuse from her, saying we were a pain, asking for things ect-?????????
Feel Pru is in a rut, and no guest skills, and not a nice person.
SO BEWARE AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry I must agree with most other reviews.found pru pleasant enough but wouldn't recommend. Room overpriced and had to supply a lot of standard bathroom stuff ourselves.however it is in a great location for all local attractions.

Dont

Use the Premier Inn down the road.  Room had not been cleaned till after complaint made.  2nd night owner /managers car alarm sounding from 04:00 continuously.  Also home to the largest cobweb in the world.  Also given wrong front door key so unable to gain entry on 2 occasions. Pillowcase dirty, and shower almost non existent.  Floors were poor quality 3 ply.  WiFi only iffy.  AVOID !!!
