We ate dinner at the restaurant. the waitress was excellent and knowledgeable. The ambiance was lovely, overlooking Lake Bemidji. The food was excellent! I love eating in a restaurant that doesn't have muzak playing and is quiet. It's a fine dining atmosphere.


Excellent restaurant, friendly service

The service we received while at Ruttger’s was above and beyond our every expectation...and that is no exaggeration. All the food at the onsite restaurant was fantastic - the outdoor seating was beautiful! Our A/C went out and they repaired it immediately. The cottage had an excellent view of the lake. The cottage was rustic and that was expected and with the large screened-in porch we were able to enjoy the lake view bug free. The grounds were well kept. 

The last night there, there was a storm and the water came in to the bow of our boat while it was docked.  It flooded completely. The owners insisted on helping us, called in extra employees to assist, used their bobcats and tractors, and spent 2 hours in the freezing cold, rain, wind and waves. Mission accomplished! Our boat is safely on land...we were not the only boat owners they did this today!   We were #3!

Above and beyond should be their new tag line...great people, great staff, great resort. We will be back! 

Great stay in 3bed/2bath cottage w/dogs

We recently had the pleasure of staying at the Rutgers Lodge for a family reunion. The lodge and back patio have been recently remodeled and are very nice!  We elected to stay in a lakeside cabin which we loved! It had a private screened in porch with a Great Lake view!  The grounds are quiet and retreatful. The resort has a very nice lakeside swimming area with a beach that the kids loved. Coming from California, we found our stay here to be very relaxing and it exceeded our expectations!  People say Minnesotans are very nice, and it’s true!

Idyllic Stay on Lake Bemidji!

I reserved a cottage about 7 feet from the lake.  The price seemed a little high for the room.  With large windows on the lake the view was amazing.  The cabin had a refrigerator but not a microwave.  I didn't have time to try the hot tub in the main lodge. The closest restaurant is the Town & Country golf course about 2 miles away.

A LOT of major renovations have been completed at this resort.  None more important the the rooftop bar they added looking over BEAUTIFUL Lake Bemidji.  Restaurant and Pirate's Cove have also seen a facelift.  
However, the cabins haven't been updated yet but that is what makes the place wonderful.  Small and quaint cabins along the shores of the lake allow to go back in time.
Service was impeccable.  Requests for more towels were answered VERY quickly.  Greeted by last name when I would enter the lodge.  Boathouse staff was tremendous getting our pontoon prepared for rental.

Great long weekend getaway

This is a rustic resort that changed ownership within the last two years. Major remodeling has happened in the main lodge. Grounds are also being refreshed. Many of the cabins and the secondary lodge outside the main lodge need some refreshing as well. The newly remodeled restaurant is very good. The lobby was under construction while remaining open. Overall the experience is great. This time there were some issues with staff seeming to need more training and growing pains with the remodeling. We will be returning next year and look forward to more changes.

Extended family annual event

Beautiful location on the lake. Perfect little beach area for kids. Nice to sit outside and eat lunch.  The rooms are as rustic as the pictures show and would elevate the stay with some updates - shower heads, pillows, mattresses.  The lofted unit was a good layout for our family with two kids.  We were placed on the end next to the outdoor bar that stays open until midnight which was really rough.  A side window was stuck slightly open and hard to reach from spiral staircase so sound traveled in.  End unit the better option as the sound of your neighbor travels easily through the shared door (locked) so prefer one neighbor over two.  We didn’t sleep well either night due to outside noise (bar and people and music) and neighbors (not loud really but main bed is right next to shared door so you hear everything).  Maybe a cabin if we were to come again but pictures looked even more rustic online.  A lot of potential but do recommend room updates.

Beautiful lake location, very rustic rooms

We stayed at Ruttger’s for a week in private cabins over the 4th of July with friends from Williston, ND and from Billings, MT. Overall we had a great stay but there were a few negatives. I’ll share the positives and the negatives for those considering a stay:

Positive: 
The staff were very accommodating and installed air conditioners for us the second day of our stay.
The rooftop bar was a fun atmosphere and allowed kids. The food from the restaurant was top notch every time we ate there.
We were able to borrow kayaks without issue for no fee.
We had a relatively private area with little disturbance from others.

Negative:
We paid full price for our stay but found out upon arrival that the free continental breakfast had been replaced with brown bag yogurt, apple/orange, (sometimes a muffin) and fruit granola bars unless we wanted to purchase breakfast from the restaurant. 

The pool and gym were closed. 

Our cabins did not have air conditioners as advertised.

I wish we had received advance email notice of the changes to our stay or a discount to make up for the inconvenience of having to cook our own breakfast every morning. 
We rented a pontoon for three days of the week but were not allowed to borrow a tube from the resort when ours popped because they are reserved for the resort speed boat rentals (even though they never moved from their spot on the ground).

Fourth of July visit

You will feel like you were robbed when you leave here.  We stayed in a 3 bedroom cottage and most of the lights did not work when we checked in.  The first night the temperature was in the 40's outside and we only found one heating unit in the living room.  The following day we found out how the rooms were heated - instructions should be left in the cabin for this.  Tons of bugs flying around the front of the cottage  when we arrived.   WiFi didn't work -they said there were too many people at the resort. Sign at the beach indicating they have swimmer's itch.  This place is a Chevy Chase movie. They put a double fitted sheet on the Queen bed so it kept coming lose all night. Only positives were the daily breakfast, the bar specials and the pool. For $600 a night we were robbed - we stayed in Hawaii on the actual ocean for $400 per night.

You will feel like you were robbed when you leave here.

We gave them the benefit of the doubt, but now, after spending the last 5 nights there over July 4th, I am sorry to say that I regret my decision to stay here. We stayed in Cottage #12 which has excellent proximity to the beach with the nice new inflatables and a decent kayak. We also had warm water and functional AC in the living room.  I'm afraid the positive experience stops there.  When we first walked into our cottage, we found we were invading the living quarters of many spiders for their cobwebs where along every corner of every room including all around the bathroom. I also found quite a bit of dog hair around the floor which stuck to my socks en masse.  It became quite obvious in short order that the cleaning staff (teenagers/college kids out on summer break) were just going through the motions - which we saw first hand in the pool building as they cleaned windows with dirty rags without a care in the world about the quality of effectiveness of their work.  We were constantly killing bugs inside the cottage, including mosquitos. The outlets in half the cottage were ungrounded making most of my AC adapters useless. The lamp in the kids room was falling apart. The bathroom laminate flooring has black mold underneath it from years of water damage, making the floor next to the bath tub and around the toilet structurally unsound and ready to give way at any moment. One of the plastic chairs on the porch had completely cracked through at the upper back and it was repaired with a piece of wood and some screws. The fireplace had daylight showing through mid-day and it seemed like someone had tried to start a fire in there with pine needles and some wood - it seems like bugs might be coming in through this fireplace, but the windows and door had gaps too allowing for bugs to enter.  My wife's hair straightener worked one day but the next day it was erratic so we're not sure if the electricity was to blame or the straightener.  The beach had leeches and a sign near the outdoor shower which warned of swimmer's itch.  The indoor pool was cloudy/hazy and I could not see my feet, or our water toys, at depths of 3 feet, let alone at 5 feet  My eldest daughter stepped on the pool-side ladder in the deep end and the bottom step fell apart.  She could have been hurt. She found the bolt and washer and put it back together, leaving it in better condition than she found it.  The lockers in the pool building are all completely rusted out. The dry sauna's temperature control is broken so it's barely warmer than 80 degrees. The hot tub has jets to move the water around and it's nice and warm, but there're no air bubbles at all. There were dead mayflies inside the windowsills of the lodge dining area.  The complimentary breakfast was quite lacking.  Their single waffle iron took nearly 5 minutes to make one well done waffle (if you think it's done when it beeps, you'll be eating a raw runny undercooked waffle).  This barely functioning waffle iron causes a lengthy backup to eager diners.  Housekeeping stopped by around 9am to take notes of what we needed (towels, garbage bags, etc) but more often than not they didn't return with what we asked for.  Also, the fitted sheet on our mattress was not big enough for the depth of our mattress and it would come undone during the night on my side (my wife got lucky on the side she picked since her fitted sheet stayed in place).  When we checked out, they didn't ask how our stay went - they just confirmed the balance due.
