Boyfriend really wants me to learn to fish AND enjoy it.  Mike took us out on a boat, showed me to cast for fly fishing.  It was windy so we also fished in the middle of the stocked lake.  I caught 4 large fish and boyfriend 2.  Besides wind and lightening, it was a perfect morning. Recommend for new fishermen and seasoned.

There are 2 large signs out at the highway noting this property is up for auction/sale... that may explain why this place seems to have a lot more potential than is presently being offered or enjoyed.

Check in went smoothly in the rustic office.  Husband said his guide was helpful and knew the fishing there (he used guide first day - then fished a couple more days on his own).  His sandwiches (provided by lodge) were good.

We stayed in one of the larger cabins (Pheasant's Roost).  It offered some nice views of this beautiful area - particularly at sunset,  The overall quality of the interior was nicely updated & furnished for a cabin setting;  but housekeeping needed to do some deep cleaning... bat poop piles on the patio, critter poop on outside of all the windows when you wanted to enjoy those views - torn (or no) screens on many windows so you couldn't leave them open - broken screen doors or exterior doors that were difficult to open - carpets needed to be cleaned & tile floors needed sweeping & mopping.  Frankly I would've done some of this since I had lots of time here;  but there were no cleaning supplies or brooms - in fact we had to ask for toilet paper and paper towels and refill for water dispenser since there's no daily service for the cabins.  In all fairness, they tell you that right up front at check in.

WiFi was sporadic at times (there was some thunder activity in the area).  Sheets/bed linens and towels were clean and fresh and both kitchen and bath looked like they'd been cleaned OK... so if you're not high maintenance this place can grow on you because it's so peaceful and pretty this time of year (counted 12 different varieties of wildflowers on my walks along the roads).  You DO need to watch for snakes if you're hiking (2 killed on the 3+ mile dirt road to main fishing lake last week & I saw 2 dead on road out to highway which might've been bull snakes - I didn't check closely).  

We enjoyed the birdlife on the first,  Quick (?) Lake, viewed from our cabin.  There were also adorable baby cottontail bunnies munching on the freshly mowed lawn and live lawn art (resident donkey and alpaca) roaming harmlessly about the property.  Resident osprey pair had babies in a nest atop a power pole near the 1st lake,  and there were lots of geese, killdeer & herons.  NOTE:  this time of year the Kildeer are nesting (on ground in open nests) so not a good time to let your dog run.

I cooked, so we didn't have need for the restaurant - Cody is only about 10 miles away with many restaurants & Albertsons grocery store.  It did look like they had some sort of catered (?) party in a large building up the hill from our cabin one night;  but they were a quiet group.

All in all this was a restful place to stay once you got used to the quirks... this lodge was probably once a lot more;  but hopefully new owners will come along and polish it back up to gemstone quality.

Good for us - we aren't high maintenace - lots of unused potential

Upon our arrival we were met with rudeness from the "manager" for being an hour early.  Then we were informed the restaurant  was closed because she couldn't find help.  On top of that we were told the water was nonpotable!  The cabin was filthy with cobwebs all over in the entryway, and in every corner of the bathroom.  The top of the vanity was dirty and who knows when the floors were last swept or vacuumed.  There was food on the floor under the cupboards in the kitchen and enough dust on the chairs to write a novel.  The back of the stove above the knobs was covered in greasy residue.  There were no cleaning services during our stay and we had to ask for trash bags.  It is located in an area with pretty scenery and wild life, but don't waste your money here.

Not all it is cracked up to be.

The hotel office staff was quite confused during the check-in process on the order of the cabins on the property and which one we had booked, the Cheyenne. The cabin was very cute and had great views, but the a/c was small and in the living room. It could not reach the two bedrooms or the loft upstairs. The a/c unit was turned off when we got there, which was about 6pm and the cabin was quite warm. The a/c unit should have been turned out prior to our arrival and perhaps the cabin would not have been 80+ when we checked in... 

A hotel employee came to check on our issue with the a/c unit around 9pm and agreed that the cabin was very hot. His solution was to bring us a fan... he never returned with a fan or explanation. We slept with the windows open, which did a number on our sinuses considering the air quality was in question. 

The hotel management is disorganized, to say the least. My husband called the management number several times about the a/c not properly cooling the cabin. The lady he spoke to said the hotel employee (the same young man who looked at the a/c unit) had to run to town and would be back as soon as he could with a fan for the cabin. The hotel employee nor fan were heard from again... 

This lodge was disappointing, but doesn't have to be. Better management and concern for hotel/cabin guests is a must!

The chef from Louisiana is quite talented and made us a delicious dinner and breakfast that far exceeded our expectations! Yum! Monster Lake Ranch is lucky to have you in their kitchen.

Did not live up to the reviews

This was the worst place ever!!! My daughter and I booked the Ranch sight unseen way back In January of 2019. I spent 3 months trying to get the staff to communicate with me. When the one staff member finally decided to communicate it was 3 weeks before the wedding. I asked at least 6 times if we could set up the night before and was assured that we would be able to get in and set up as soon as we wanted. Unfortunately everything that was told to us was a lie!!! I completely missed out on getting to watch my daughter get ready and help her get ready because I had to do all of the set up! Not only was the place NOT ready the night before the wedding to set up, we had to clean the place before we could even set the place up!!!! I had to send people to town several different times because no one was even around to give us cleaning supplies so we had to go back 7 miles into town to purchase cleaning products so we could clean tables, chairs, and the patio heaters used to warm the place! 

My now son in laws family chose to stay at the ranch and there rooms were not ready when we were told they would be and they were disgusting and dirty even though they hadn’t been used in the days prior to the wedding! Then the day of the wedding they woke up to no hot water! Now of course those things happen but there was no apology or any type of compensation!!!

The website says breakfast is available but when the family went up to the restaurant it was closed and they were told it was seasonal. Of course the website said nothing about that it only says breakfast available!!!!! 

The ranch had several $1,000 dollars of our money for 4 months and still could not be ready for us despite assurances to the contrary. But that wasn’t the worse part of it all. The worst part was that we were continually lied to over and over and over!!! The ranch is beautiful but I’ll never recommend it and I certainly will NEVER use their services again!!!! Terrible TERRIBLE STAFF!!!!!!!!!!!
