The room was clean and comfortable!  The staff and owner were very friendly and helpful!  My granddaughters really enjoyed the pool too! Super close downtown activities. We would absolutely recommend staying here!!


Great getaway!

This motel may not look like much, but it is worth the stay! We arrived after office hours and our key was waiting, though we had called ahead and reserved. The rooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable. The decor might not be to everyone's taste, but still fine. Within walking distance was a great coffee shop and there was a brewery RIGHT NEXT DOOR! There was a large indoor pool, which we didn't use, but which looked well maintained.

Comfy Beds

We stayed at the Chief motel three nights during our trip to the Black Hills. The room had two super comfy queen beds, a small fridge and a large screen TV. It was immaculately clean and very quiet. The motel is perfectly situated right next to Rushmore Brewery and within walking distance to Custer's main shopping and dining area, yet being very quiet. The motel is also very motorcycle friendly. We will dwfinitely come back.

Wonderful motel, clean, quiet and perfectly located

Our family of 4 stayed in one of the family rooms, which included two queens and a twin...perfect for us!  The room was very clean and Bruce, the owner, was so helpful and kind throughout our stay.  We used the pool and hot tub every evening, which was great after a day spent hiking.  The motel's location is prime time...within walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants in downtown Custer, which made for an excellent home base for our Black Hills trip.  We would absolutely stay there again.  

The Best Choice for a stay in the Black Hills

This is an old-fashioned motel that you drive up and park right in front of your room. The owner/manager is nice and knows a lot about the Custer area. The room had a comfy king-size bed, a small refrigerator, nice sized TV, and adequate sink and bath facilities. The large indoor pool and hot tub are a big drawing card. The rates here are much more reasonable than the chair motels down the road. I picked this motel due to Trip Advisor reviews, and they were spot on. It was a fine stay, and I would likely stay again. 

Fine Place to Stay in Custer, SD 

We recently travelled to South Dakota and decided to stay in mom-n-pop motels instead of chains along the way.  I searched many reviews and found a theme with the family-owned motels - not fancy but clean, comfy, and full of  wonderful, helpful people.  Chief Motel did not disappoint.  It wasn't fancy but it was very clean, the room was comfy and Bruce and Nancy, the innkeepers were friendly and super helpful!  We stayed there for several days while exploring Custer State Park and the surrounding Blacks Hills areas and it was a PERFECT home base.  Everything we wanted to see was close by.   We travelled as a family and enjoyed the Two Room Queen-Double which allowed us a little privacy with the slide of a pocket door.   The pool was great after a long day hiking!  

I loved everything about our stay here!  Highly recommend!

Clean, comfy and a perfect home base!

Bruce and Nancy were the best hosts.  The rooms were wonderful.  Very clean and pleasantly decorated.  Smelled fresh and clean,  and the beds were comfortable.  We will definitely recommend to others,  and would stay there again!  There was no breakfast,  but that's ok. Close to downtown area, but pretty quiet.

Best hotel you could ask for. 

I stayed here for nearly two weeks and was very happy to have found the Chief.  It may look like many other older motels from the outside, but the large room itself was a delight.  Newer sheets and blankets.  Good furniture.  A decent-sized HD TV.   Very clean sink and bathroom area.  Microwave and refrigerator, of course.  Walking distance to downtown.  The owners are very friendly and helpful.  And all this for a very reasonable rate.  Highly recommended.

An excellent choice!

It's a motel but don't let the moniker dissuade you from staying here. The Chief is not apart of a chain and the owners have taken pride in their little gem. The room was as nice, big and clean as any hotel we've stayed at.  The mini fridge microwave were newer and came in handy. The Chief has the largest indoor pool and spa in the area and the water was clean and refreshing.  My wife and I set up "base" here for 4 days and the location gave us easy convenient access to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Mammoth Site and especially Custer State Park.  We will definitely stay here the next time we are out this way.

VERY CLEAN

Chief Motel is located in Custer South Dakota. All the other hotels in this area were so outrageously priced. This was so within our price range for three nights. Bruce the owner, was so welcoming and informative about the area when we checked in. The motel is located on the main thorough fare within walking distance to everything downtown. Our room was a double queen so clean and so kept up and so roomy. It included a microwave refrigerator coffee pot, wi-Fi and a very large television. It was supplied with many towels. The beds were so comfortable. Found out that the mattresses were new in May. And quiet. We slept like babies.There is a pool and hot tub on the property enclosed in a separate building. Can’t say enough about this property. Receiving supplies a place where you can wash your car. It’s an ideal location for all sides to be seen. Can’t say enough about this place. Congratulations Bruce and 25 years ownership.
