The location was excellent for tourist like us. We did day trips from the Calamity Peak lodge. Everything from Deadwood to the Badlands we visited. Lori gave great tips on road construction to avoid and the most scenic paths. It was great being so close to Custer State Park as we were able to see all sorts of wildlife. Turtles, prong horn, bison, mountain goats, mule deer, white tale, eagles, and the kids favorite prairie dogs. When we had a hot day we were also able to find beaches to swim in, at the park. We had four people and were very comfortable. The kids slept on the hide a bed. Grandma had her own bed as well. Shower was hot. Kitchen was excellent for our purpose and we made use of the grill twice. We had brought our own cast iron pans and recommend others do the same. They have some pots and pans and dishes for convenience but because of the nature of the business they are not the best.

All we needed perfect location.

What a wonderful step back in time. The people that own this small lodge have done such a wonderful job maintaining it.  It’s nestled in the trees and along the banks of French Creek. The charm just oozes out. It’s not fancy but it’s clean, well maintained and 1000% charm. It’s booked all the time but if you can stay here DO!!! Quiet, close to everything, clean and charming! Total win!

This place is amazing

Wonderful owners. Great location between Custer and Custer State Park. Quiet. Room for kids to run. Nice cabin with nice furnishings. We stayed in Cabin 4 for seven nights. There were 4 kids and 3 adults - we brought a blow up mattress and threw it on the floor for one kid. Watched deer behind the cabin almost every night. I recommend this and would stay again if in the area! Very reasonable price too.

Great place for the family

If you’re looking for a place out in the country yet close to Custer State Park and all the attractions, this is the place. Run by a family who pays attention to all the details the same as if a member of theirs was coming to visit. So clean you could eat off the bathroom floor. We had the smallest unit yet it felt just right for the two of us. There are several
space saving features and we were able to spread out without feeling cramped. A table and chairs are provided out side for each unit and we sat out there several evenings. There are also grills. Our unit had a microwave, mini fridge and a coffee maker with coffee provided. About a mile to several nice restaurants in town and a lovely coffee shop, all in quaint storefronts. The owners gave us a map and dining suggestions and were readily available to make a minor repair to our unit. They even have a friendly resident cat, Cash. We were there 5 days and could’ve easily stayed a week. Two things to know, no AC and no blow dryer but I always bring my own blow dryer and the fan they provided more than adequately provided a cool breeze. Given the location, the price, and the cleanliness of the place I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Hidden gem

After reading other reviews we wanted to stay at Calamity Peak Lodge and we were not disappointed. It was a great home base for day trips to sights and attractions in Custer State Park and the Black Hills. Hosts are very welcoming and facilities are clean, cozy, and all you need for a good night's rest in a home away from home. We would definitely recommend staying here and we would certainly rebook here if we return to South Dakota. 

A Real Gem!

Our family took a trip to South Dakota from Tennesse and didn't know the area but was looking for clean, cost-efficient lodging near Custer state park and we choose this location due to other great reviews.
The owners were very nice and accommodating even before we arrived. We rented cabin 7 for 7 days, it has 2 queens, kitchen, full bath and was very private. It has a lot of steps up to it but they are very beautiful rock steps. 
there wasen't any couch or place to sit to watch tv except the beds and since our stay was so long we asked if we could switch cabins. The owners were very nice and helped us work around vacancies and let us switch to cabin 6 . so we spent 4 days in 7 and 3 days in 6. We were out riding the 1880 train and they called needing us to move locations when we told them where we were at they offered to move us so we didn't have to interrupt our vacation. to us that was going over and above on customer service and we really appreciated it.
Cabin 6 has a bedroom with a queen and a living room with a couch and queen bed, full kitchen, full bath and a deck. it wasen't as private as cabin 7 but the space made our 13 days of close family time easier. If you travel with your family i am sure you will understand that. 
The property was very nice, our daughter had to have her morning "coffee" over the bridge and creek. My daughter is a cat lover and they have a pet running around that helped with her homesickness so we thank them for letting her play with it.
as a whole we highly recommend this stay and wish we could go back soon.

great family vacation

We had a wonderful time staying here with our three beagles. We stayed in cabin nine, which had a king size bed, coffee, pot, and refrigerator. The cabin was very clean, and the bed was very comfortable. The innkeepers were very helpful and informative on site seeing and the cabin is pet friendly. Will most definitely stay here again!

Road trip to the Dakotas

We had a fantastic experience staying here. Great customer service and they answered any questions we had happily. The cute little cabin had everything we needed! We had a great time just sitting outside on the little patio and taking in the amazing views right outside the cabin door!

2 night stay at Calamity Peak Lodge in Custer, SD in mid-September.  Easy online reservation.  Owner very pleasant and lives on the property.   Our cabin was very nice with 2 queen-sized beds, fully stocked with kitchenette, grill and picnic table.  No air conditioning, but we were there in September and the weather was wonderful (70’s during the day; 45 degrees in the evening).  Nice view.  Conveniently located near so many attractions and restaurants.  Very reasonably priced.  Totally enjoyed our stay and would recommend it!

Weekend Stay

Went to the Black Hills for a quick getaway. A coworker recommended Calamity Peak Lodge. We were not disappointed. We were greeted by the owner, Joe who gave us great insight into the Black Hills area. The lodge is conveniently located near Custer State Park as well as Mt. Rushmore. We stayed in Cabin #9. The cabin was comfortable and fully furnished, with the exception of shampoo. The king sized bed was comfortable and the bedding kept us plenty warm. There were no negatives about the cabin. If I had to nit pick, the TV could be bigger. Also the light outside the front door illuminates the room at night through a window by the front door. Again this is nit picking and I would stay in this cabin again as is. The owners are the nicest people and made sure we were comfortable. The best perk of the place was the price. I would think it is the cheapest in the area. We stayed two nights at Under Canvas. The entire bill for CPL was cheaper than one night at UC. If you are going to Black Hills, this is your place. Even had deer on the property frequently.
