Saigon Balo Hostel was easy to get to and a great location.  Air-con was great in the room and worked well.  Toilet didn't flush as you had to lift the lid but one of the roomies sorted it out.  Staff were friendly and helpful.

Stay in Ho Chi Minh City

First off, this place is no longer Saigon balo but it is called De Journey Hostel. There is no indication of Saigon Balo anywhere anymore. The staff here are super friendly and there is a cute rooftop terrace where they have simple breakfast every morning. The location is ideal. That's where the positives end for me. We were on the first floor and I think maybe the floors above were more modern they seemed cleaner and more recently painted etc. Could be the same with the rooms. Our room was tiny but that's the norm in city hotels. Dirty walls, dirty lampshades, cobwebs on the ceiling. Damp musty smell. The stairwell was filled with bikes, old dusty mattresses and fire extinguishers. It has so much potential it's a pity. If you stay here maybe ask for a higher floor! 

Could do so much better 

we booked in this hotel while we were.in Saigon. we booked 2 rooms. 1 with 1 queen size bed and the other room with 2 singke beds..the room with the 2 single beds looks normal. the room with 1 queensize bed looks like a lovers room. the rest room is plain clear glass. privacy and me time in the bathroom is not an option. the rooms comes with breakfast in the roof top. you have very few options in the menu and the serving is so small.. if you will book in this hotel you have to arrive early. it has a roll down doors and they cloae it at midnight.so if you will arrive after.midnight you will have a hard time finding the hotel. 

lovers and friends...

Hueyen at the front desk is the best part of this hostel. She provided a lot of help for touring around HCMC and gave a lot of information on visiting Vietnam as a whole. I stayed in a six bed mixed dorm which had its own bathroom and hot water in a more western style shower( more than just a drain in the floor and detachable shower head). Room was very quiet for location and the room was clean. No real common space or anything extra.

Pros
The staff is really friendly
The hotel is perfectly located
The room was good: bed, ac, fridge and television were all nice. 
The bathroom was new, really spacious and your toilet won't get wet from showering

Cons
The entrance of the hotel is changed and has a new nameplate. So you should really write down the address otherwise you won't find it. Not a single sign of balo hotel on the outside. 

The hotel has a lot of potential to be very good, but it really lacks a couple of things:
- the breakfast is bad
- the hotel is really unsafe in case of fire
- there is no shower hose, and no space for toiletries in the bathroom  (they provide you a toothbrush but it is placed on top of the toilet because the basin has no space to put things on) 
- the room was clean but could use a spring clean to clean the walls and floor around the bed. 
- the room wasn't cleaned once in our total 3 nights. 
- if you're a bad sleeper you will be waked up during the night by the noise on the hallway. 

Breakfast:
The breakfast is really sad. You get a tiny baguette (like 3 times as small as a normal one) and you can only choose between egg or jam and butter. You can't get an omelette or scrambled eggs. When you buy a baguette as a tourist on the street it costs only 5000, so it shouldn't be so hard or expensive for them to provide you a normal baguette with your egg. Also, everywhere in the hotel is mentioned that the breakfast is from 7-9 am. The receptionist also mentioned this. However we found out during our first morning that it won't start before 8am, so you can't enjoy the city in the early morning to avoid heat.

Safety in case of an emergency:
The staircase is really dangerous. This hotel would definitely immediately be closed by a European fire worker if  they saw it. There is stuff placed everywhere, e.g. a bicycle and a couple of stretchers. The carpet is loose. Did I mentioned that the light is not working so you couldn't see a thing during the day? What if there is smoke? It would be a complete disaster.
