Luckily did not book ahead.  Got off ferry and told taxi to drive right towards Back Beach.  Stopped at sight of hotels and after a couple of efforts found this hotel.  Got room (501) with full length window overlooking entire beach for 300,000d per nite.  (I didnt bargain).  Hotels in Vung Tau overpriced so this place was, I thought a fair price.  Room basic as expected but comfortable and clean (for Vietnamese standards).  Bathroom basic and smelt of urine but a few toilet flushes later and a spray of deodorant fixed that problem.  Flat screen tv, 2 chairs and table to look out at the great view, new bar fridge.  Ok towels and sheets are clean but not 5 star quality - you get what youve paid for.  I wish I could have cleaned the windows though.

This is the Vietnamese side of town but that can be a good thing, expats picking up young girls is not my scene.  Walk right out of hotel past the big jesus towards town and rented a motorbike for 120,000d.  Now you can go to Lotte Mart (3km fr hotel) and buy groceries etc or eat at KFC and the like.  Staff speak no or very little english but they were lovely.  Hot water for tea or coffee at reception.  Had no problem with shower water.  Hotel has a lift.  Beach is dirty (of course) but there is a pool up the road (near overhead bridge) for 80,000d.

I would definately stay here again for the money and with a motorbike there's no problem.

Great view, good room, value for money

we came to Vung Tau not booking ahead as we wanted to walk in and look at the rooms before booking for obvious reasons. Thuy Van street is full of hotels from no star rating to 4stars. we always opt for cheaper range as budget backpackers. This hotel was priced at $15 but we eventually bargained them down to $10 for a double room with a small balcony facing the sea (midweek price). After paying the 1st evening's fee we were also advised it is a cold water shower only. At least there is A/c, small bar fridge and a small flat screen tv. The room was definitely not clean and towels were not white as should be but this is expected paying so little. the second evening was much better as the room was cleaned properly! if you compare the pricing to most hotels this is definitely a worthwhile choice. Just make sure you bargain hard as these hotels are all hard up for business. Ask all the necessary questions and clarify exact costs etc. We also rented a scooter for $10 per day which is almost a must in this part of the world. all in All a good stay here! As for attitudes of the personnel we as westerners need to remember there is a language barrier needing to be overcome so be patient and bargain hard!

Vung Tau Back Beach

I and my friend stayed there for 1 night. They provided a really terrible service.

At the begining, hotel security man called us while we were looking for a normal room. He told us that the hotel had a room which costs around 300,000VND (15.00 USD). We went inside and looked at the room. The view is nice because it opposite to the beach. Room has nice decorations. However, that was the only one (nice view) we got after taking that room. 

Here is what made we feel uncomfortable:

1. The receptionist changed her face from a very "friendly face" to a "boring face" right after security man asked her to show us the room which is 15.00USD. I think that she wanted to sell higher price around 500,000VND or 600,000VND (25.00USD to 30.00USD)

2. We saw the room right after the housekeeping staffs finished cleaning it without spraying perfume to make a better smell. Therefore, the cigarette smell in the room was really terrible. I did ask receptionist to change into other room.

3. What we received afer taking that room was: no hot water, spider net in the bathroom. The receptionist told me a very very stupid answer: "Maybe the security man forget to tell you, the room you are staying now doesn't have hot water. Because of that, we gave you the room rate 15.00USD"

4. The question is: "Do I need to pay more than that to get a room with hot water"? 

Believe me that you can get a good room at Thuy Van hotel with a 15.00 price during low season (just a normal room) which is offered by receptionist at the time you arrive to Thuy Van hotel. However, we didn't choose Thuy Van hotel because we didn't know about the hot water problem.

5. Amenities in the room are really dirty and old. Door locker is old, too. The receptionist spoke to me like scolding me when I asked her to come and help me to fix the door because we couldn't lock it. I didn't expect the room with very good quality, just expected receptionist attitude to be improved. It would make your mood worse than ever.

In short, I won't stay here again if I have a trip in Vungtau.
